It seems like this would have been such a great opportunity for there to have been tangible, in game consequences to your actions.

Instead of having a game over, what if a non-compliant attitude had you fail to stop the civil war, and fail to gain an alliance with Orlais?

I suppose people would complain that the only way to "fix" the problem is to go through with playing The Game? That they must play The Game or "fail".

It makes me wonder how many people actually want their actions to have consequences, whether people would just rather reload until they get the good ending, or how many players are actually willing to continue playing while having to deal with the negative repercussions of their actions.

I guess it depends on how they pan out.

I love choice / consequence scenarios that all have some element of good and bad in them dashed with a bit of player motiviation.

If BioWare could do them in such a way that you're making trade offs everywhere, it would be grand, the downside is - they already struggle to showcase your choices throughout the game in any meaningful way so it probably wouldn't get the justice it deserves.

I'm still waiting for my war assets to make an appearance in ME3......

Yeah, because playing the game has worked great for Orlais so far. Civil war, Cory using their own stupidity against them..yep..that whole game thing..awesome.

I'm not saying the Orlais Approach is great, but I question whether Threaten With Great Violence would actually yield better results.

You seem to think politicking exists because good people with good intentions decided politicking was an effective way to rally support and cooperation. Hmm. Allow me to clarify this for you. Politicking exists because Selfish People Want Things. Selfish people want things and If They Can't Have Them, No One Will.

The whole violence thing falls under the "No One Will" clause, and that is an acceptable conclusion for Selfish People. Presumably, it is not acceptable for you (the player). That's why you are forced into politicking.

The fact that this is not clear, and players believe Threaten With Great Violence should solve Orlais' leadership problems, is actually a failure on the BioWare writers' behalf, by the way. The writing did not communicate the necessity. The player is left in the dark. Collecting Halla statues.

Except that the 'Game' is not an accurate representation of how politics actually work, neither is House of Cards or Game of Thrones or whichever political drama they tried to ape here. And while these stories can be horrendously entertaining when well done, the implementation they had here was crap and didn't fit in with the rest of the game. It's an ARPG, not a Game of Thrones political strategy game. Whatever, it's like an hour of crap in a game that's otherwise very fun so I shouldn't complain so much.

It's just so badly done though.

OP watch the BBC Pride and Prejudice and learn how they talk. It will help in knowing which is the right dialogue choice to gain approval, I got 97 approval as an elf.

Imho it was very easy to find best dialog choices even without trial & error. Just keep in mind what your advisor ?Josie? said, "don't be straight or offensive."

This quest was such a refreshing change of pace for me! No hacking and slashing, but carefully dancing through the dialogs and paying attention to all the intriques that were going on, I liked it quite a lot.  It could've been a bit longer, though (but this goes for all the main story missions)... I agree that the timer was maybe unnecessary, but on the other hand it added a bit more suspension and urgency to the quest, so I didn't mind terribly.

And yeah, you can gain tons of court approval (especially during the dance with the Duchess) just by being evasive and noncommital. And by gathering the secrets for Leliana.

Yes, well, we're not talking about actual politicking. Just like the combat isn't an accurate representation of how fighting actually works. Not nearly enough clumsy grappling, biting, nutpunches, and etc...

But, yeah, it's badly done. A great idea done poorly. Halla statues.

Honestly, I feel like DA:I is a huge collection of great ideas done poorly. Right? Wicked Eyes, sure. Skyhold customization? Upgrade from two flower pots to six! Hunh. Throne upgrades? New improved throne: now with torch! Hunh. Mounts didn't add much, did they? Or agents? The whole game groans under the weight of its ambitions. It's still a good game, don't get me wrong. But it's not very good. And it just makes me sad because we can kind of see how it might have been Great.

You think so? I honestly enjoyed that mission very much. It also makes sense that your Inquisitor plays The Game while surrounded by the finest of Orlais and I thought it was a very nice touch especially the dance with Florianne. Court approval is very easy to raise you don't need 30 secrets to give them to Lelianna and each time you do you gain approval. As mentioned above the dance with Florianne can potentially give you an extra 30.

It also makes sense considering Orlesian culture that the court would not approve of an Elven/Qunari/Dwarf inquisitor. Hell they hardly approve the Human one. Despite that I ended that mission with 100/100 approval with an Elven Mage who denied being the Herald every step of the way no problem at all

@Icinix:  Interesting that you bring up TellTale - because while I think their games have flaws... that style is exactly what I want more of in RPGs.

Yes, I like combat - but I only want it when it matters... not to just "kill some bears" or "cleaning up hostile forces".

Honestly - it's something I absolutely DO like about DA:I.  My Hinterlands is a peaceful place now - where "hostile forces" don't just randomly pop up... why?  Because I dealt with them... and I don't need/want a game mechanic that ignores my actions.

The Court scenario isn't perfect... TellTale games aren't perfect... but we need to start moving in that direction for our big budget games.  THAT - is roleplaying to me.

How is it hard? Just pick the middle option on the dialogue wheel all the time rofl.

The dialog is easy, mash the middle option repeatedly. It's running around spamming the search button and trying to find all of the BS you have to find while your approval runs out, and bouncing back to the ball every frappin time the bell rings. It's not hard. It's just irritating as hell!

Like I said, it should have been a side quest. Those who enjoyed it could play it, and those of us who it just annoyed could avoid it. I can't stand fake people and posturing in real space, and I don't dig it any more in cyber space, especially being forced to do it under a time crunch!

I mean your character's dialogue cannot be a true representation of him/herself which makes the whole thing beyond annoying. Heck I just walked in and lost 10 pts for being a Dwarf.

Are you honestly complaining that the Orelsian court isn't fair on those outside their little circles and expectations? Either you play "The Game" well or go home empty handed. That's the entire point.

There's nothing stopping you from speaking your mind and being yourself...

...Except losing "points" due to naivete in a deadly decadent court setting that is.

While I love TellTale games for what they are, I still do like the freedom of movement in a combat-centric adventure game. The combat in DAI is as hard or as difficult as you want it to be. I'd miss it if it weren't there at all, or if it were reduced to quick-time-events for mechanic simplicity. I wouldn't be opposed to a TellTale-style DA game, but I wouldn't want them to abandon the traditional, combat-styled games.

Not the idea of what it tried to do, but rather that most of it results in players needing to select identical dialogue choices until the final moments.

What defines a strong role playing experience to me is players being able to get together afterwards and discuss how different their plays were.

I can't believe that people don't see an issue with it, an issue with regardless of your character, you have to choose certain dialogue screams terrible to me.

It's even worse than choose top right for paragon.

That's only in the dance with the duchess, and only if you need the approval. There's more than enough approval around to take -20 in this conversation if that's important to you. I agree, however, that simply having more options with a little more variation in approval and topics would've been preferable.

Ha!  I actually enjoyed the Fade in Origins! Well, of course, I used a mod to get me all the powers right away, but still...

On my first few playthroughs before that mod was created, I thought it was fun, a bit long but fun. As for the segment in DA:I, I loved it!

Different tastes I guess.

I enjoyed the fade. The ball in Inquisition is a bit dull in my opinion. Not a fan of such political stuff.

I wish there was at least the option to just march in there with your troops and shout at people and solve it the normal way instead of putting up the bs Orlesians and their bs politics.

I quite enjoyed both, the winter palace and DAO fade.

The problme with DAO fade was that it was much the same in all palythroughs, so it basically did not have any replay value. Whatever powers you went into the fade with, it was set up so that you would use the ones you were given. Pitty.

As for the winter palace time thing, man up and go with it. It was not that bad.

I got fed up with the hassle of this severe annoyance called a quest, and sick of running in circles in this maze of a map spamming the search button. I went to Cullen with 7 of 11 secrets, without cashing in any of the Halla statues for whatever the heck they were for, and called out the Duchess in front of everyone, banished Gaspard and cemented an alliance with the Empress. Good enough for me, and good riddance to this annoying quest!!!

P.S. Oh and I got the Belle of the Ball achievement. Then I sentenced whatshername traitor chick to hanging out with the hogs on the farm. It was the choice that PO'd the fewest of my companions.

I really loved it. It was an excellent change of pace from pure hack n slash.

Next PT, I'm going to try to collect all of the Halla statues, I couldn't find them all the first time through.

Wicked Hearts is by far my favorite mission, I love it. Its awesome to have a totally different mission; Everything else in the game is fighting and combat, I'd love to decide which dialogue option gets me the most without showing my hand, who is planning what and why, and who will rule Orlais, and how.

Do you have any idea how dumb it sounds to say "OMG Why can't I have max Court Approval for being a rude dwarf who sticks out like a sore thumb, and randomly disappears from the party for minutes and has absolutely no charm!?" Like, I can't even sugercoat, sorry lol. That's just... Really dumb whining.

It isn't difficult to get maximum court approval: Better yet for players like you, they make it nearly impossible to fail the mission unless you really suck. Don't be a witless moron and don't waste time. It isn't that difficult, and asking devs to dumb the game down so that people who can't handle it can breeze through it is selfish. You have a wicked heart, and a witless mind.

I pretty much hate this quest. I didn't mind the fade much once I knew what I was doing. Here, even with maps it's just annoying because now I have to care about what arrogant royals think, about their petty games and play along, AND I have to deal with all the stupid idiotic changes in armor that never work right.

In the fade, it was kind of fun. Not at first when you were trying to figure it out. Then it was pure WTH? But to a degree it was fascinating and cool to become a mouse through a hole or use a golem to smash stuff, or an arcane horror... I actually found most of it kind of fun though after X games I did get the skip the fade mod because it was a lot of back and forth headache after so many games. I prefer more direct approaches. But despite initially being lost, it still had redeeming aspects. This? It really has none. I truly cannot find one thing about this that is fun or interesting. If I were playing it on PC I'd be accessing the console to figure out what commands are needed to skip to then end. That's how awful it is. And I'd spend more time doing that than playing the game because I hate this quest that much.

What's worse is that the second you finish it you have morrigan stuck to your side in the war room. I had planned on doing other things before going to the arbor wilds as I still had plenty to do and wasn't a high enough level for it. And now she is in every war room meeting with me which for immersion, after what leliana warned me about ( leliana whom I've come to trust greatly in all matter despite her propensity toward killing as the best option) - well, it feel like she doesn't belong in there and she should not be in there and they are now pushing me toward doing that quest when I am not ready to do that quest. I wasn't even fond of having Cass in there at the beginning except she started it. Note she is absent in skyhold. They need to remove morrigan from the war room until you begin that quest, then make a cutscene where she enters like the one for the mages.

But really, whatever idiot thought this quest was good needs to be transferred to making origami or something.  Okay, maybe not but this quest IMHO is tedious. I have done it four times and each time I hate it even more.
