What does approval really do? Does it matter?

Hi guys, what does approval really do besides changing the card of the companion?

Do we get a quest or dialogue if the approval is high enough?

I have been playing an Inquisitor with high approval to Cole, but I am not sure if I am gotten anything more than with other companions I never use, such as Varric.

As far as I know, companions give you a fetch quest without any cinematic (Varric get red lyrium, etc) and at the end of the game a quest with cinematics. Is there more content related to companions?

Since I cannot tell how much approval I have with them, I would like to be sure I am not missing on companion content, since it is what I value most in Dragon Age games.

Yes, approval unlocks companion quests. That in turn affects romances, so if you want to do one of those you should try to keep your approval with that character up.

Is there a way to tell how much approval you have with a companion?

not really. other than remembering.

At some point in the story they will give you a personal quest which will change their card

That personal quest, is only 1 per companion, and all companions have one?

Approval will determine which conversations unlock with companions; some conversations will only happen if you have high or low approval.  I had a very, to-the-point conversation with Blackwall where he told me he didn't like me because my approval with him was only negative; later it got better and we had a more positive discussion.

All companions have a personal quest and afterword they will each ask you to do a favor for them - typically killing or collecting something on maps for them - as well; taking them with you to do those things opens additional dialogue.

When you speak of "changing their card", what or where is this card? What does that refer to?

Their Tarot card that's displayed when you're selecting your party members.

I've had that happen only with Vivian.  I've certainly tried haarder to garner approval with other party members more, but I do take her out in the field the most.  The mission unocked when I opened a new area on a map, and completed one very straightforward quest for her.  When I next went into the cards, hers switched.

I had no idea those cards changed or were indicative of anything. I'll now have to look at them more closely.

The companions all have 2 or 3 cards that will change depending on what happens with them. There is usually one for after a major quest for them (which is usually a personal quest but not always, Varric's change comes after one of the story line quests) and often one for the romance. But even non-romancable characters have card changes. For example, Varric has three different cards that I know of, Cole has three though you will only see two of his on one play through and so on. It's one of the little perks of doing their personal quests and/or romancing them.

I would really want to see the current approval rating of the companions, as it's always horrible to see "<insert companion name> greatly disagrees" and you have no idea if it's near the breaking point or still in the safe zone...

Go talk to them back at camp. You can tell when they hate you, because you'll get a really passive-aggressive conversation, or maybe they'll outright refuse to answer your questions.

In fact... Get Solas angry enough, you can punch the poor little elf in the face after he insults your race (Human only?). I almost felt bad.

They took out the feature because they wanted the friendships to feel more organic and real and less like a numbers game.  While I too miss the bar telling me exactly were I stood I appreciate what they were trying to do.

Also as StrangeStragey mentioned you can get a feeling of if they like by how they respond at base get them high enough and they all have a scene were they tell that you're their friend get them low enough and they get pissy and tell you off or in Cassandra's case get drunk and tell you off.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I had a conversation with Sera because the relationship was really really bad. No surprise, since I am roleplaying a sensitive Inquisitor and she is a crazy b****.

I guess I have problem with Dorian because I was taking him with me quite a lot and I think I still haven't got his "companion mission".

I don't know where I stand with approval. xd

So  if your approval gets low enough do they become your "rival" like in DA2? I liked that system because even if they didn't agree with you they could still respect, but if you kept them in the middle and not at "friend" or "rival" they kinda of saw you as wishy washy.

So I guess my question is, if I get their approval low enough will their companion quests still unlock? Or does it have to be high approval only?

All i know is if their approval gets extremely low they can leave the inquisition on their own and no longer be selectable. I lost cole on my first playthrough.. i kept yelling at him for messing with everyone and pretty much anything pisses him off and then when i went to party select he had a red x thru him and was no longer available.

I just had Blackwell leave.  No warning.  In fact, I'd just completed a mission where he approved of my decesion, and followed that with a long conversation that was mixed with approval and slight approval at my comments.  Then, I had back to back throne judgements that he must not have liked, because he was then gone.  No conversation option to sway him to stay, just gone.

Was there not even a cut scene where he chews you out? Or at least a note?

Without spoiling things this may be a quest of his, as Elanor said check for a note.

Not only has my second Inquisitor argued with Solas unexpectedly, neither Inquisitor (one full play through and maybe a third of a second) haven't even been able to trigger a conversation cut scene.
