I'm at level 14 now, and I have (or can craft) helmets way better than the initial ones for Cole and Vivienne. But they are such a distinctive part of their look that I don't want to change them. Too bad I can't upgrade them (or craft something similar).

I've looted helmets later in game specifically for them, though.

Agree, I have found helmets made for them only that are similar to their looks but are a lot better stats wise. All we need now is an option to turn on helmets in cut scenes.

I still have Cole's hat in my inventory just in case he needs it. Even though he hasn't worn it since I unequipped it about 3 seconds after he joined my party for the first time.

It reminds me of Sten's sword.

Go to where Cole stands (top floor of the tavern in Skyhold) and there is a chest right next to him. In that chest is another hat that is a significant upgrade to his starting one. It's not exactly the same, but it's got a very similar oversized rim. I don't find the change an obnoxious one. No idea if you have to be a certain level for it to appear (I only found it last night, in fact, and I'm level 19 atm).

Can't help with Viv though.

I put Cole in a Free Marches Helmet and made him look like a cross between Freddie Mercury and The Stig.

I think Cole gets a new hat from a dragon or when you do his personal quest.  They are out there, just a little hard to come by.  Keep upgrading the armor and don't worry about the hat, I say.

I put everyone in crafted mage hoods at one point. Made the team look very mystical and mysterious, especially the warriors.

I just enable the option to hide helmets at all times. Solas and Varric look silly with heavy armor on their heads.

Helms are also extraordinarily difficult for artists to get right in games, for some reason, though the few I've seen so far look fine.

Remember the cowls in Dragon Age: Origins?

I'm more bothered by the fact that helmets aren't showing in cinematics, when everything we were shown pre-release led me to believe otherwise.

Vivienne will get one after her major personal quest (the one that comes after Here Lies the Abyss) that's an upgrade based on her original look, if that helps.

With the pom-poms.  Can't forget the pom-poms.  It was the final touch of absurdity in a pretty stupid design.

What we really need is a schematic for them that can be reasonably remade as you get better material.
