Who cares why I may have N number of saves? Restricting it on my own machine is idiotic.

I mean, not any more idiotic than disallowing naming the saves, not including a screenshot even though you can’t name the saves, or not separating them by character. But idiotic anyway.

Actually, the theory that they all must be loaded is probably right because they have no way of telling which belong to which character without reading the files because they’re not separated by character aaaaaaaargh why are these people let near a keyboard and a programming environment?

The best thing you can do is to go into every character and make new saves for each of the save points you want accessible. Then in the save folder, only keep those save files that you just created.

Yeah. Idiotic.

(Technically it wouldn’t be too hard to write a small program to read the files and rename them; the file format includes the character name in plaintext.)

I bothers me a lot - the inability to name saves and the limited number of saves for a game which has a ton of replayability.

I'd rather like to know why it was changed since it seemed to work just fine in previous games - did they run out of time to implement it or something in that regard?

In fact, here’s a slightly manual version that should work. Do this:

0. You should probably make a backup copy of your saves somewhere other than My Documents\BioWare first. Put it on your desktop or wherever. Just in case.

1. Make a copy of your save folder. It’ll be named Save - Copy. That’s fine.

2. Click Start menu, enter cmd.exe in the search box, hit enter.

3. In the command-line window that opens, type

powershell

4. Go to the directory you created.

cd '.\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition\Save - Copy'

5. Change the $name='evelyn' to whichever character you want, and then copy and run this line in the shell:

$name='evelyn'; md $name; select-string .\*.* -pattern $name -list | get-childitem | foreach-object { move-item -path $_ -destination $name }

6. You should now have a directory named after your character containing all their save files. Repeat for the other characters.

We shouldn't have to run powershell scripts as a workaround for a functionality we have had for years in other BioWare games. Nor should we have to wait for the modders to fix the game's problem.

I have no idea how this game managed to win an award, everyone must have voted before playing it...

Well, if I hated it I wouldn’t play it and hence would have no saves :)

I don't need 250 saves like I don't need to play the game.

I would like 250 saves and considering I have a TB full of space there's more than enough room for as many saves as I want just about. Plus I save at conversations I prefer and before quests I like. Given the restriction wasn't even in previous games I see no reason for them to be in this one.

And even ME at least left the restriction to be per character basis instead of giving me a global limit.

So why not move the save to another folder. It's not even hard to do that on PC. And since I use the same character names I've been doing this since BG1.

I miss naming my saves. I take time off when I feel burnt out from gaming and it was always nice to revisit my favorite scenes in DAO/DA2 when I feel like playing again. Now when I want to remember a save before an event I like, I need to keep my save folder opened and sorted by date while playing. I add that save into a zip file named "character name - this event." I move all my save files temporarily somewhere else and load that save when I want to easily find it.

If you play on a console you get a console's limits. That's hardly my fault.

Again you're on console. THere's no reason for a PC to have these limits. It worked just fine the way it was in previous games.

There's no reason for a console to have these limits either. I can manage my own system memory BioWare, kthanx. I have a brand new xbox one and a whopping total of one game for it, (hard copy so it's not like it's even taking up space) I don't need these pointless restrictions on save files. Other games let me save as much as I want to

Because the saves give no clue to what saves they are.

(And I actually have moved my saves. I just don't have a clue which save belongs to which character because they're only organized by save date).

For the moment I have a new folder and started new characters and I'll divide the saves per character. Its absurd because the previous games used to do that on its own.

True enough.

it is possible to identify which save belongs to which character, it's just a little idiotic.

these are my most recent saves. See they all have different codes at the end? DAISAVETIME04ECC221, DAISAVEU002477C4E1F, DAISAVETIME9238BAD2?

ECC221 is my main, 7C4E1F is my elf rogue, 38BAD2 my qunari warrior. Take all files with the same end code, put it in a backup folder, go load a save and see who is missing when you go to switch characters, name the folder with their saves after them. rinse and repeat.

the save limit issue is silly, create a subdirectory in the save directory and move your 250 saves over there and now you can make another 250, you can name your saves and they have a timestamp so even if you move them youll kind of know what part of the game they are for
