Hello :>

I'm fairly new to the Dragon Age series (playing since when DA:O was free on Origin about 3 months ago). I've always loved RPGs so I have no clue how I've managed to miss out on this! Of course the first thing I did after finishing DA:O was purchase DA:2 and after that DA:I and I love every single one of them!

Now that I've finished all three games I feel there's a lot I've missed out on in terms of expansions and DLC, since I've never downloaded any of those. For example, everybody apparently was familiar with Corypheus but me. Not to mention the Architect, Nathaniel Howe and other major characters from expansions and DLC that I have picked random outcomes for in the Keep.

I'd like to replay the three games and it would be nice to get to experience as much of the story as possible, so I was hoping somebody could help me decide which DLC or expansions are important to get. All of them would be too expensive so I'll just go ahead and say I don't necessarily care for a Shale or Sebastian in my party over a large expansion with more story content. Awakening and Legacy seem important for starters?

Thank you in advance!

(Hope this is the right place for this topic :|)

Corypheus appeared in Legacy and Architect and Nathaniel Howe in Awakening. Mark of the Assassin DLC has a nice story as well.

Most relevant to the main plot?  Awakening, Witch Hunt and Legacy are the most relevant.  Most of the others are self contained stories.  For Origins, I'd recommend The Stone Prisoner (Gives you Shale, a sardonic golem companion), Warden's Keep (A cool side adventure that explores the history of the Ferelden Wardens) and Return to Ostagar (A short but fun mission that involves returning to the battlefield and retrieving Cailan and Duncan's equipment).

There's also Golems of Amgarrak, a side adventure without any real choices that takes place after Awakening.  Its not bad.

Aside from Legacy, DAII has Mark of the Assassin.  Its a fun side story romp involving heists, Orlesian parties, and wyvern hunting.

I endorse all of Heimdall's recommendations.

Don't buy the exiled prince DLC. It's not very interesting

Also, even though you got the game free on Origins. Buy the Ultimate Edition on steam during the sale, its a lot cheaper than buying bioware points to buy the DLC separately.

I actually forgot Exiled Prince wasn't part of the main game :P

Yeah, Sebastian is a divisive character.  Some people like him, others don't.  He does give Elthina a bit more content, so if you really want the most complete story, go for it.

Thanks a lot for the replies :)

I have collected some Bioware points by unlocking DA:I achievements, but not enough for all recommended DLC. Still would get me about half though (Legacy or Mark of the Assassin).

Too bad a Steam sale just ended! I'll be sure to put the Ultimate Edition on my wish list to be notified when it goes on sale. Thanks for the tip, that would indeed save me a lot of money!

Edit: Hmmmeeeehh, I don't think Sebastian and I would get along anyway, since I can't bring myself to ever execute Anders XD

Well, its also got a Leliana cameo (She also has a cameo in Mark of the Assassin)  So that's nice.

Just cameos though, so you could just look it up on YouTube.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Origin points are not Bioware points. They are just something like what Microsoft does to keep track of your achievement score

As a rule of thumb - any choices that appear in the keep relating to some dlc/expansion, means that said content is relevant to the story and you should get it.

For example:

Golems of Amgarrak does not appear, because it was mostly a dungeon crawl with no choices a little lore.

Witch hunt appears because it has greater lore relevance for the next games.

Things that do not appear in the Keep are generally stuff which is either railroaded to go one way (ex. killing Howe in DAO) or that have no significant impact in the setting. There are some exceptions (ex. the fate of Fenri´s sister, Gaxkang, Caladrius, Genitivi, etc.), but as a general rule it should be of some help.

Awakening and Witch Hunt only for Origins.

Both DLCs for DA2 are great and better than the main game.

The Awakening expansion for Origins is undoubtedly the best DLC in the franchise.. Another good one would be Witch Hunt.. Those are my two favorites.

I consider Awakening pretty bad to be honest.

I found most of the characters bland and uninteresting (definately the worst cast among all games as far as I'm concerned), and while the main story is decent, it's quite short for a quite expensive (at the time of the release at least) expansion.

My favorite DLC in the franchise is by far Legacy, leaving all competition far, far behind.

I consider it the second best DLC by BioWare, just after Lair of the Shadow Broker.

I have to agree with Jester, Legacy is among the best DLC Bioware has put out.

In terms of the series in terms of story and as a standalone story, Legacy is near the top and has some challenging gameplay, including puzzles. Awakening is important to the series storywise, but isn't, depending how attached you are to some of the DAO characters and writing style, that great a example of story telling on its own. The combat is pretty gimped -- last time, I did the final boss fight in a few minutes on insanity or nightmare and shrugged.  It is an actual expansion and standalone game, and in that sense depending on pricing value for the dollar. Mark of the Assassin is pretty fun gameplay wise with some puzzles thrown in, the story seems irrelevant. Felicia Day stars, you might like that.

The Sebastian DLC is not that bad. You get some side missions, and you get to learn how to deal with a devout person. You'd have to check the Wikea but I thought it was possible  in the end-game to keep Sebastian on your side if you had a favourable relationship with him. Can't remember.

Spoiler

For DAO I enjoyed Return to Ostagar and the Warden's keep. Fun gameplay, some compelling story content, some cool loot. I never tried the Stone Prisioner.  Feastday gifts is just fluff. It's seems widely accepted that the Revenge of the Darkspawn or whatever, is not worth that much.

Edit: Awakening does have some great moments and it introduces Anders and your avatar's predecessor, both of whom I enjoyed as characters. Howe's ok. I just found the central premise and some of  the other characters to be a little off. There is a major unresolved  bug in one companion quest that you really need to look out for. Try googling "DAO Awakening bugs" or something.

Most important:

-Awakening

-Witch Hunt

-Legacy

Somewhat important:

-Leliana's Song

-Stone Prisoner

-Warden's Keep

-Return to Ostagar

-The Exiled Prince

-Mark of the Assassin

Not really important:

-Darkspawn Chronicles

-Golems of Amgarrak

~~~
'Most important' = main game storylines will have to do with it
'Somewhat important' = improves understandings of the world, events, characters etc, but isn't necessary to understand main game plots
'Not really important' = has maybe a bit of nice stuff but otherwise doesn't matter, at least for the most part
If you just want to push through the older games, then just get Category A, but if you got the money and time to spare, go for Category B (especially Stone Prisoner and The Exiled Prince since they give party members, just remember that Sebastian's content in TEP starts in Act 1 aka a new game is needed). And if you want the complete package then just get the Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition and Dragon Age 2 with all DLC along with it.
Yes, these 3 are the most relevant to the main story. Witch Hunt is very short, though, so it might be enough to just read about it and watch the cutscenes in Youtube. I'd totally play the other 2 if I were you.
If you are going to play DA:O again, get The Stone Prisoner. Shale is one of my favorite characters from that game (and a great tank for combat).
Makes me wonder what would the Exalted March DLC be like.
Oh well, we got Heroes of Dragon Age instead, that's cool too (not really).
