Hello Dragon Age community.

I’m a long time Elder Scrolls player and have decided to give Dragon Age a try. I need a good RPG to get lost in for awhile and I have heard good things about Inquisition. I plan on playing as a Rogue Elf (Archer) as I usually play as Bosmer in Elder Scrolls.

I have absolutely no experience with any Dragon Age game or any of the lore associated with it. Can anyone offer any tips for my character class and does anyone know of a site where I can familiarize myself with the lore without having to play the previous 2 games?

Thank you everyone. I am really looking forward to playing.

I played a Mage so I can't offer much on Archers, but the Dragon Age wiki will give you a lot of background info on the world: http://dragonage.wik...Dragon_Age_Wiki

Dragon Age 2's story is probably a bit more relevant to the story of Inquisition, as it explains the finding of Red Lyrium as well as why the whole mage/templar war is going on.

Dragon Age: Origins would give you background info on any conversation talking about the 5th blight or the Hero of Ferelden(the character you play as in Origins). There's also a few characters that can make an appearance in Inquisition depending on what choices were made in the Keep website to customize your starting world state.

This is a surprisingly comprehensive overview:

Pore over that, set up the Keep, and enjoy. Archer is a lot of fun (and a little beat crazy powerful). And welcome!

Just do a search for 'dragon age story catchup' and you'll find all sorts of resources to fill in the story/world for you. A particular good one (IMHO) is this ... http://kotaku.com/a-...-age-1658487212

EDIT: Well, beaten by poster above me ... leaving here for posterity and double-the-fun

I’m a long time Elder Scrolls player.

Then you'll enjoy this game.

It was built specifically for players like you.

That was a great overview from Kotaku.

I'm off to the Keep!

Just one more question. Are there tutorials in the game for processes like crafting and upgrading weapons or is it pretty easy to grasp?

Thanks again.

Yep, the crafting is nowhere near as complicated as Skyrim.  You'll do fine.  Welcome to the Inquisition.

I'm also a long time Elder Scrolls player. You'll find a good home here. When you get a chance, i would recommend playing the previous DA games. For now though, enjoy the Inquisition!

Go play Origins first for sure. DA2 would give more context to Inquisition than Origins but isn't nearly as good of a game, so it's up to you.

I think if you're starting where you're starting, you might like DA2 more than some people here. It's actually a very good game, with a few very egregious flaws due to it's short production time (the worst are reused environments) - but in my view, the flaws don't hurt the experience the first time through. It's very character driven, very well written, has a wonderful cast (introducing two very important companions in Inquisition) and it's a drastic departure from the typical Bioware narrative. The DLC that was released for it is some of the best Bioware has done in any of their recent games and totally worth it. The gameplay... has some stylistic choices that some people don't appreciate, but is largely unchanged from Origins. The animations are flashier, and dudes spawn on top of you sometimes, but that's really it.

It's less replayable than Origins, but still a terrific game. Even a lot of the detractors say it would be great if it weren't the sequel to Origins. Which I think is a little overdramatic, but there you have it.

I think I like DA:I more than Elder Scrolls because of the companions (and the fact that I'm not limited to the spells I can hold in my hands >.>). I played each of those games through twice, but never found the games to be much different across play throughs. DA:I can be very different each time you play it, especially if you change your keep drastically. You might start your first play through as an elf or dwarf as you get more dialogue options to ask questions related to lore, like about the chantry or the Maker, etc. But there is plenty to read in-game where you will get a sense of the lore if you don't know it.
