so I just finished a play through of the Winter Palace after the most recent patch and think I found a bug. My party was Iron Bull, Dorian, and Varric, and Varric appears in the Vestibule at the beginning before I first enter the Grand Ballroom for the first time. I'm able to have click on him and he makes random comments. Once, I've entered the Ballroom however, Varric, disappears from the Palace. I couldn't find him anywhere. In a past play through, I could swear he was in Guest Wing room with Iron Bull but maybe not. Has anyone else had this problem? He joins my party when I go to fight so it's not really a big deal just a bit annoying.

You have to use those halla statues to find him. It's the place where you can climb on the white fence. You'll need to unlock that door.

Varric runs off?
His book WAS quite a success in Val Royeux. I imagine he started an impromptu autograph event.

He's not missing, you just need to unlock a door that leads to him. I would recommend not to waste your statuettes on that particular door, however.

I don't get the statuettes thing...It is some kind of party where you have to randomly find statues lying around, and place a certain number on a shelf next to a door in order to enter certain parts?
Is there some kind of in-game reason for any of this that I have missed?

You need statuettes to unlock doors that have items/people that will help you resolve the situation at Winter Palace.

Oh I know about how it all works, I just wondered if there was any kind of in-game explanation to make sense of the mechanics of it all...the statuettes being used to open doors etc...Why is some of the party area even blocked off needing statues to open? How did other guests get in there etc?
It all just seems a bit odd to me, and I wonder if I missed the explanations.

Well, Celene is very much into elven... lore.
Also, wasn't the Winter Palace built upon ancient elven grounds? Maybe the Orlesians chose to incorporate some remnants into the design of the palace.

Clearly someone who was laughed out of court for not liking his books decided to seal him and his fa s in there by stealing the halls statues. If you need the halla statues to get in there, how the hell did Varric get in there? Is that why there aren't enough, he stole some? :S

okay... weird... I opened that door after climbing the trellis and Varric wasn't in there for me. I even went back and loaded a save game to check figuring I maybe I had missed seeing him there the first time... but nope, he's not there.
maybe he's got a special set of halla lockpicks that Bianca made for him and doesn't want to share....

I never found him there either once we left the vestibule the first time. I opened as many doors as I could but couldn't see him (then again, I seemed to be blocked off from getting back to the courtyard with Dorian and the coin-toss fountain about halfway through as well.) I figured maybe he was hiding from the Merchants Guild or something.

I agree. I loved the idea of the Winter Palace quest but the actual execution was so haphazard and gamey.
The entire mission can be solved by save scumming and thoughtlessly spamming the middle dialogue option. The Halla thing was the worst though.
