I defeated the Hinterlands Dragon at level 11 on Nightmare. It was actually pretty simply.

Important Abilties

Make sure tank has the 8 Second Immunity Ability + its upgrade and Shield Wall.

Set Shield Wall to preferred and the Immunity Ability to Disabled.

Make sure your Mages have Fade Step and your Rogues have Evade.

Set Fade Step and Evade to Preferred.

Tips

Take 3 Ranged DPS + 1 Champion Tank. (No 2H Warriors/Dagger Rogue)

Spread out the Ranged DPS around the dragon with Tank in the middle. (Double click on a spot in Tactical Menu to have character hold position there.

As soon as the dragon is about to breath fire at someone pause and have them Evade or Fade Step away from it then hold position wherever they moved.

If dragon is going to breath fire at tank use Immunity.

When it flies away and calls adds do the same thing. (Spread out the party and Evade/Fade Step/Immunity whoever it launches the fireball at).

When it lands on one of the bottom cliffs stand underneath the cliff its on and fight adds to avoid fire.

Once its on the top cliff just run up and continue the original strategy.

The only way this could really mess up is if the dragon launches two bouts of fire at the tank in quick succession or your A.I loves to play in the fire.

That wasn't aimed at me, above? Being honest. No! I really haven't given much thought to this crafting system at all. Why? Because it is in the fracking Undercroft. A separate load from the castle, and it is already painful enough going to the War Table. Yes I know I can use a fort too. if I can be bothered, which I am not. I have crafted some masterworks for my tanks +3 guard on hit yadda yadda, but I normally get better drops....

But then again you are wrong. You can specialise, into any specific magic resistance be it Fire, Electric, Cold, Spirit, etc. As well as the broader magic resistance through crafting. I will let you work out how, seen as though your the expert from your above comment. So why I will repeat again. Would you not choose magic resistance over individual magic resistances? Like the Templar armour has in abundance, when having magic resistance. Not Fire, Cold, etc.

Yes you can obviously have ranged or melee resistances as well.

The reason for little crafting thought too, because the damn broken requistsions keep stealing all my metal. I haven't got enough, tier 4 mats yet, and decent legendary recipes. The recipes are so expensive 7k each the ones I have found, which hasn't been too many. The little dwarf doesn't make me any, she said she would, but still hasn't yet, the liar..

Does Varric get a better crossbow? Thinking I found one if i can be bothered going to the Undercroft.

If your best schematic doesn't use defensive cloth, then you won't even have the option of "specializing" into broader magic resistance. Its clear you have no idea how the crafting system works and yet you have the gall to tell me i'm wrong.

Why have you speacilised at level 11? I am sure you could have done this fight without taking a champion tank Blackwall.

No need to fade step, simply flank, you can even barrier most of a flame breath hit on any caster.

The adds can mess up your entire group without the important rift nuke ability.

Sadly for you, you have no idea. Yes the arms and legs upgrades, which you clearly didn't understand, both use cloth. D'oh. When keeping the main armour heavy melee or ranged etc.

Why did I bother, responding to a wittless troll, I dunno hulk smash.

If the schematic uses cloth, then they aren't using defensive leather, which means no fire resistance, cold resistance, ranged physical resistance, or bleed on hit from non-dragon mats. You cannot "specialize" in a resistance if the game won't let you to begin with.

Stop while you are behind rumination888, this is so tedious. Your attitude is appalling.

Your first remark was an insult, an accusation telling me I didn't know how to play this game. I then explained and left the option for you to work out where you went wrong. You did the same thing again in your next reply insults and an accusations. Your third reply hasn't admitted your error, flaffing out a bunch of hot drivelling air, that means absolutely nothing.

The shematics for both the upgrade arms and legs on any warrior based suite of armour will often include cloth. This would logically be used for magicial resistance, not individual magical resistances. Because on that main armour you would have logically set them to be as heavy melee, ranged, maybe health properity.

Scrubbing the ranged from, turn the bolt ability, after sheild bashing any archer, not like they will break guard, and are often in constant cc from a fire, fear, ice, lightning, rift abilities. My mages easily deal with their threat after setting up the taunt.

I admit to not having every schematic, I have said in my first reply,  I do not particularily favour this crafting system. But after providing a specific example of a warrior armour with heavy magical resistance, I can only imagine there may be available craft. If not than the Helm, etc, can put that magic resistance property higher then what is available from those legs, and arms.

No. I really don't want to be carrying or crafting 4 types of armour, for every party member, beacuse I might face a specific magical damaging type of dragon. Having to set inidividual resistances would mean 3 times 4, plus crafting the ordinary.

L2P above and stop wasting my time with your nonsense

This thread has been so entertaining to follow, until DeeLite808 stopped responding and Pocketdragon took over.
Deelite808, thank you for being such a perfect troll!

these are the only two quests i have:

here lies the abyss
wicked eyes and wicked hearts

inner circle quests:
memories of teh grey (need jsut 2 more items from western approach)
promise of destruction
Favors of the first enchanter (need to find the last circle tome in western approach)

I'm surprised people still kept helping mr. Troll, because this post should've made it clear. He mentions that he doesn't have Vivienne as a companion, doesn't have the option anymore to recruit her but he does have her personal quest? Hello troll!

"If you do not follow up on the recruitment quest before Skyhold opens, Ghislain Estate will disappear from the map and Vivienne will not be recruitable."

well ****. that didn't happen and skyhold is already open.

Riiiiiight! :D

I miss when this thread was more about Deelite raging against his most hated companions, the "tactitians screen" (which was really a tac cam complaint) and in regards to his being wiped by, quote, "fire. fireballs fire. and more fire. my characters dancing in the fire after being hit, so on so forth."

I concur Sekou. So i guess Deelite808 finally killed the dragon?

Sorry you didn't understand a particular psot that you have repsonded too of mine, or are you are just trolling for the sake of it? On your very first post as well? Naming my name as what? Before we go down any roads I seek clarity...

Interesting how you intentionally misspell words due to a typo in my post, it suits the overall behaviour so far. I salute you.

You know.

- Deelite808 left.

- PocketDragon began.

Coincidence? I think not!

Yes it was clever wasn't it. Not as clever as being in that fanclub, posting for the pointless ranting sake of it. that behaviour suites your group to the lettering. Than your BFF is further making absurded assumptions, too rate himself, how very juvenille. Was he really mind blown that would mean he has a ****head? After your given rating.

Adding you made such a perfect judge of character. When deciding only to have given rants at what you considered to troll, equally doing exactly the same thing you have just accused of.

What bugged me about this fight, is the AI for companions... they would casually and happily walk in and stay in the fires left by the dragon... and obviously die almost immediatelly... pfff lol

I've been lurking on this thread for several days.  Very entertaining.  I was rather impressed with the patience most everyone showed with the op.

Generating guard will stop Iron Bull from dying due to dragon fire (or you might need to barrier him up)

Also if you are having trouble with the Ferelden Forstback, who's level 12. You won't like the other ones

To be honest, of the other dragons that I fought I think the Frostback was the hardest. Which seems weird since I believe it's the lowest level dragon. The dragonlings don't make that fight any easier, even if they are just distractions.

I only found one dragon there (after you open the section up on the war table) and I've been ot nearly every area in Emprise? Where are the other 2?

You can only reach two of them after building a bridge to get to the other area. One's by a colliseum and another is at the bottom of a huge gorge near some ruins. They're pretty challenging if you aren't leveled properly and one constantly gets allies and renews its armor when its health gets low.

My Lvl 14 team didn't stand a chance against it. Cassandra could take the brunt of its attacks, but even with Varric bombarding it and Vivienne using her staff with cold damage, it would take 30 minutes or so to take it down - and by then they would be out of healing potions and dead. It was also annoying when it retreated out of reach. I'll get back later and see how it goes. It was my first dragon fight - and a disaster.

Yeah, I think I can handle the damage taken rather well if I micromanage more. The issue is rather that my guys dish out too little damage. Fighting a single Giant is epic - and the dragon has, what, 20 times as much health.

I think that the OP had somehow mistaken Josephine as Viv. He said he had the quest where you need to get the spellbooks, and that he had gotten some family crest for "Viv" but couldn't recruit her.

Really? I don't know what to say to you I killed him on my Second or 3rd try Nightmare lv 12 because he's 12 to.

I don't know how you play but its alot of micromanagement and try to control you tank so he stays close to his head so he doesn't move so much.  Mages need to be on the sides but not to far. Every time he moves got to tactical cam to move you mages to now postition and control the tank to move to head.

Stay under the rock that he lands on, H so you ppl don't try to run to him. When the takes flight disengage to run faster to dodge fireballs .

You need to control the tank because he likes to run to the legs and dragon will try to reposition himself and move to much.

Without Tactics (any news as to whether Bioware will be adding Tactics back?) you'll have to micro-manage your party all the time to get through big-fights like this one. Coming from DAO and DA2, you'll think your companions all took moron pills. The easiest solution I can find, since I don't want to micro-manage my party members any more than I'm absolutely forced to, is to make sure you have everyone stocked with Regen potions, then just spam away at the Dragon (helps to equip appropriate items if possible). Just let you companions keep spamming and spamming with whatever attacks they want to use, and watch their health, and at 50% or so have them take a regen potion. Do that over and over. If you run out of regen potions then start with the healing potions. I was having trouble too, expecting smarter AI, and then realized I was going to have to manage all of them myself. Argh.
