I realized I hadn't even tried to kill a dragon yet by level 18, so I went to go kill the Hinterlands one. Should be simple, I thought.

As I run my Inquisitor tank in to get aggro, the dragon lets loose a fireball. Apparently the dragon can't lead a target and the fireball hit the ground where I was a second ago and not where I was now. Stupid dragon.

Then my party runs through the fire patch and dies instantly. Stupid party.

I just turned the game off at that point. I'm sure I could solo it, but what's the point?

After crafting some good gear for my party, I could afford to let them actively run into all those fires. Crafting made all the difference for me in this battle.

The Hinterland dragon is only a level 12 dragon. As most dragons he generally stays on the ground.

You need to chose the right team and equip it with the right gear and protection.

Use two tanks like Cassandra and Blackwell. Patch them up with the best gear you have found. And don't be an Uncle Scrooge. The only way to survive a dragon is when you have given your party members the best gear, care and attention. If you have fileld out the entire 'Sword and Shield' it is preferable.

In my first playthrough I had a Cassandra who was litteraly invinsible. At level 18 she could take down The Highland Dragon on her own (if I had the patience and time). After 40 minutes of fight she was the only one alive, and she just kept on smashing. I gave up initially due to the time spend.

I'm on my third playthrough. The first thing I do is finish everything in Haven and get out of there to reach Skyhold. From here I can get to Empire du Lion and The Hissing Wastes to collect Tier 3 materials.

My advise is go to Empire du Lion and The Hissing Wastes and collect all the Tier 3 crafting materials you can get. There are other places, but these two are the best. Spend time to collect.

Metals:

Dawnstone - Tier 3: Empire du Lion, Emerald Graves
Silverite - Tier 3: Empire du Lion, The Arbor Wilds
Volcanic Aurum - Tier 3: The Hissing Wastes
Everite - Tier 3: The Hissing Wastes, Crestwood, The Western Approach, The Exalted Plains, and Emerald Graves
Nevarrite - Tier 3: The Hissing Wastes
Stormheart - Tier 3: Emerald Graves, The Arbor Wilds, and Crestwood

Dragon Bone - Tier 4: The Hinterlands, The Storm Coast, Crestwood, The Western Approach, The Exalted Plains, Emerald Graves, Emprise du Lion, and The Hissing Wastes

Leather:

Snoufleur Skin - Tier 3: Emprise du Lion, The Exalted Plains
Wyvern Scales - Tier 3: The Hissing Wastes, Crestwood (gives you high fire protection)
Craggy Skin - Tier 3: The Exalted Plains and The Hissing Wastes
Great Bear Hide - Tier 3: Emerald Graves and Emprise du Lion
Hardened Gurn Hide - Tier 3: The Hissing Wastes and The Western Approach
Lurker Scales - Tier 3: The Hissing Wastes
Red Hart Leather - Tier 3: dropped randomly

Dragon Scales – Tier 4: The Hinterlands, The Storm Coast, Crestwood, The Western Approach, The Exalted Plains, Emerald Graves, Emprise du Lion, and The Hissing Wastes

I would especially use time on hunting snofleur skins. They drop fade touched items for about every 250 skins. There are two versions though. One of them is "On Hit Heal 1% Of Health".

You, 2 tanks and 1 mage. Only bring rogues if they are archers and well armored.

This is my basic. Of course there are other things to attend to, such as upgrading your potions and be sure they are available. Armor is still first priority though.

[Edit]
I forgot to mention a handy amulet. You should be able to find one or two of those at level 18 as it is a level 15 item:

"Superb Lifeward Amulet"
+ 500 Lifeward Heal
Common amulet (grey)
Description: When a blow ia about to drop a characters health below 0, the amulet shatters and heals the character for the specified amount

- Put those on Cassandra and Blackwell.

Yeah, I'm level 16 and getting my ass handed to me by the Ferelden Frostback, so at this rate I'll never be able to beat the game since I'll eventually have to fight Corypheus' Archdemon. :b

I noticed that Xarius478 says that his char has "Two Superb Rings of Critical Damage" in his awesome video of him killing the Hinterland Dragon in 20 secs on Nightmare. I'm pretty sure that I've read that rings with the same effect don't stack - but on the other hand I must say that it's hard to not trust Xarius478 regarding this as action speaks louder than words. Anyway, anyone who knows which rules that apply regarding this?

Oh, and my Lvl 17 team just lost their second fight with a dragon (Vinsomer). It was annoyingly close - one more health potion and it would have been the other way around.
