I haven't beaten that Dragon but you I think you should have a Sword and Shield guy. If you want it to be easier I'd control Sera and have her have a thousand cuts used with upgraded flask of fire. You can get focus upgrades from the Cullen side of perk thing. I haven't tried this myself yet but It might work ha, ha.
I can't defeat HInterlands Dragon

When I crafted my staff, I added fade touch obsidian to the masterwork slot. When hit, I gain 3 guard. It made a world of difference for me. Playing as a knight enchanter and on nightmare, I went and fought the dragon that is asleep in Emprise du Lion, The Highland Ravager. I killed it along with 19 of the dragonlings on solo at level 18.

Tank set to follow itself
Ranged set to follow controlled character.
My NM setup is Cass, Sera, Dorian and myself a Rift Mage.
With that setup if you stay ranged they stay ranged except your tank which just tanks. When you need to move them go into tac cam and simply click the spot where you want them to go. When the dragon vortex attack is coming go into tac cam and run them right up to the dragon.
But, there's obviously a bit more to your struggles. First, use barrier and guard. Your tank at that level should literally shrug off full breath attacks to the face with no issue.
Second, most of your troubles are coming from the fact that you're trying to clear out whole maps in order. That's the last thing you want to do. You should be in high level areas getting t3 schematic and materials. You're gimping the hell out of yourself. The game, as Bioware has stated, is not meant to be played that way.
Lastly, at your level you should literally be able to let the AI win that fight so there has to be some fundamental issue with the abilities your choosing. Are your characters specced into their best specialization abilities. Sera under AI control could take that dragon out herself with Tempest abilities. And are you getting combos in? Weakening the dragon? Keep dots on it constantly (Necro is great for that)? Your DPS should melt that thing at this point and your tank, with sword and board, should be indestructible. Maybe start with getting better gear. Craft even some T2 stuff. That should be more than enough.

apparently it isn't because i have t2 items on my party and they do nothing to help them.

not using sera ( can't stand her ) - so she's largely ignored.
seriously this is the first DA game that I can't stand more than half of my party members (that means I could care less about them), so I'm always stuck using the same ones for nearly every mission. Sera gets on my nerves (her voice and I really do not understand a word she says)
and the rest of your post I have absolutely no clue what you're talking about (keeping the dots???)

Select a character, move you cursor to the spot where you want them to stand (yellow circle apears) and press X (on PS4) and the yellow circle will stay there. You can press X twice to "force" the character to stay there. If you advance time (R2) or exit tac cam (touchpad), the character will obey your command to move. This works for me just fine, if there's a problem for you then it's probably some kind of game error and we can't help with that.
Note, do not perform any "attack" commands after the "move" commands.
Frankly, we understand your frustration, but there's plenty of people trying to help you, and a bit less rudeness would be appreciated.

I killed him at level 6 as a mage. Stood out of range (at the mouth of the entrance cave and pinged him to death. I was so far away my companions would run toward the dragon but teleport back to my location over and over until the dragon was dead. His loot then transports to your location but there is other loot at the docks you will discover after you kill the dragon.

1) yeah this is what doesn't work. I use the tac screen to do this, and nothing happens. the characters in my party do not listen
2) rudeness? I"m kind of getting tired of repeating myself over and over agian, which is what has been stated im the thread many times through this thread. IT doesn't help that people make me feel as if I'm inferior because I"m not able to beat a freaking dragon at level 18 when they are glorying about doing it at level 12 on NIGHTMARE difficulty.
Listen NOT EVERYONE can play nightmare off the bat we are not all dedicated gamers. I save my time during the year to play certain games and know that certain games take a lot of time to play. I only have the luxury to give games enough time so that I can enjoy them (as since I have a life, I put that BEFORE games anyday). I play games for fun. but this is part of the game that hasn't been fun. Already putting 70 hours in this game and not being able to defeat one dragon is enough to get someone royally peed.
there are no helps in the game that make it easy to understand. The AI's on the party members are left to be desired. I have to finish this game before the NEw Year, because by the time i'll be able to get back to it, I 'll have 5 other titles to spend time on. I have a stack of games that are begging to be played that I have ignored so I could play this one.
and wouldn't you thin I find it rude for everyone else to "glorify" that they can beat it on a CERTAIN level/difficulty without taking into consideration that not everyone plays like them?

did you miss my post? I said this is the only thing that hasn't been fun (can't defeat what is supposed to be an easy dragon) the rest of the game is fine.

That's a long thread for the easiest dragon in the game. Highland Ravager will be fun for you.

I tried this around the 10th time . and the dragon was never in the position to be in position to register the hits.

If you don't want to change the way you play, then why bother asking for help? No matter how many times you run away from the vortex, its not going to change the fact that not running away is the better way to play.

did you read the thread? I didn't know that running away was what caused the damage. now that I know, I won't run away.

Okay but you're not enjoying trying to kill the dragon, and you won't get any XP when you do because you're overlevelled. So if you went to casual you could kill it, get past a part you don't like, and move on.

A mage has unlimited range. If you can see it you can hit it. Still works after the patch. Haven't tried it with a dragon again yet but I can still destroy my enemies from a range they cannot see me from.

I want to be able to defeat it at hte CURRENT difficulty. changing difficulty level is cheating in my opinion. and I won't resort to such antics (I never changed the difficulty in my run throughs on DAO or DA2)
I don't care about the XP. its so that I can complete the game and leaving DRAGONS behind in a game Called DRAGON AGE, would be kinda like "why did you paly this game if not to confront dragons".
