Okay, so you won't run away and you have fire resistance gear. What exactly are you having a problem with then?

my party members are dying
I'm dying
can't get past 70% health on the dragon.

A mage has unlimited range.  If you can see it you can hit it.  Still works after the patch.  Haven't tried it with a dragon again yet but I can still destroy my enemies from a range they cannot see me from.

this I did not know (I'm not a mage). Have to take over one of my mages then, huh?

You will not see much registering when you hit it because your damage is so slight that it can take a LOOOONG time to kill it.  I didn't time it but it was over 30 minutes for me at that level.  It works but takes patience.

That doesn't tell me anything. What exactly is killing you and your party?

I like ranged characters and I defeated the arischock with a rogue archer this way, run away, shoot. shoot, run away shoot shot, run away, skill shot that does the most damage, run away as it refils. rinse and repeat with healing and mana refill when I needed to. took me 40 minutes to kill him.

Yes, you will have to use one of your mages.

fire. fireballs fire. and more fire. my characters dancing in the fire after being hit, so on so forth. (said this in the thread already)

and as sated in another thread by a member with issues about their party members actively seeking to burn themselves alive:

Ranged characters also seem to have a fond spot for running into melee range.

Then your fire resistance is low. Are you modifying your gear with gloves/boots? Do you need tips on where to grab some fire resistance materials to craft with?

I only have tier 2 materials and schematics. the fires resistance items i mostly found through quests (and the one vendor in Skyhold). None of the schematics I have are for anything to do with fire resistance.

haven't found any boots (gloves I've found but none have fire resistance)

You can have fire resistance on tier 2 materials and schematics. You can have +25% fire resistance and +12% magic defense on crafted mage armor using store bought schematics and materials, for example.

You're probably getting hit with fire because you tank is down if you get a sword and shield guy it will be better.

Val Royeux sells T2 schematics. One of the merchants also sells silk, which is a material that can add magic defense. Hinterlands Crossroads merchant sells dragonling scales, which is the material you want for fire resistance.

Fire resistance is optional. Casting Barrier on your characters during the Fireballs is more effective.

Still, at level 18 you want to have Crafted Tier 3 Equipment with high Stat boost for everyone in your party if you want to fight Dragons (remembering that killing dragons is an optional challenge for those looking for a challenge). You may have some Purple Unique Items that might be almost as good, but by level 18 you can except some of them to be obsolete.

Tier 3 Materials are widely available at Emprise du Lion, Exalted Plains and Hissing Wastes.
Tier 3 Schematics can be bought either at Emprise du Lion or Hissing Wastes. Or, if you are cheap, they can be farmed as it is outlined on this thread.

I killed him at level 6 as a mage.  Stood out of range (at the mouth of the entrance cave and pinged him to death.  I was so far away my companions would run toward the dragon but teleport back to my location over and over until the dragon was dead.  His loot then transports to your location but there is other loot at the docks you will discover after you kill the dragon.

Hey thanks!  I just tried this- level 8.  Not the fastest way to kill a dragon but it worked great!

I only found one dragon there (after you open the section up on the war table) and I've been ot nearly every area in Emprise? Where are the other 2?

All 3 are after you cross the long bridge and enter the breeding grounds. The first is by the Pools of the Sun. The 2nd one is up further by Leontine's Steward. The 3rd is up even further. Two of them you need fire to kill, and the other one you need cold. The first one is the Hivernal, which you need fire for. The second is the Kaltenzahn. Bigger and tougher. Need fire for her also. The last is the High Ravager. She starts off sleeping, and one can use the Mark of Rift on her, but make sure you are using cold and not fire. The bad thing about her is that when she brings her head back to let out that burst of fire, fire circles appear on the ground, and do not be in one of them when she slams her forelegs onto the ground. Hope that helps.

I'm level 18 (playing normal diff), and I've tried nearly 20 times to defeat this dragon. I cannot for the life of me get past 70% of his health. My party dies, and I have to start all over. I have all the fire resistance accessories I can find, but none of my party members can last past the first 25% of damage.

Level 18 Rogue Arrows
Level 17 Mage (Ice Staff, Ice and Spirit)
Level 17 Mage (Ice Staff, Spirit and Electricity)
Level 17 Tank/Warrior (two handed weapon specialty)

What do I do?

When fighting her, you can leave and go back to your camp and rest. It will refill your potions. Try to keep your 2 mages on the outskirts, and if that does not help, then right under her. Use Cassandra, as said, she is just about un-killable. Take control of one of your mages, and use that mage to fight at a distance. When she calls the dragonlings, concentrate your fire on them. Keep ducking and dodging from her fire. When a character goes down, take control of another character and bring that character back up. It is not an easy battle, but you can do it. If you are the tank using a 2 handed weapon, then take out the rogue for Cassandra. Use the tactical for the mages to keep them away from her vortex when she flaps her wings. Use cold spells also on her, along with the staff.

NP.  Glad it worked for you.  Just use spells that won't need you to be in range and Giants will fall with this strategy as well.

The key is DPS. The hinterland one flies away on occasions so that makes her a bit longer to kill, it gets easier for the other ones. You need to figure out a way to do a massive amount of damage in a short time. OR using an Knight Enchanter. I had a dual wield rogue, I remember bringing nearly all of them to 1/3-1/2 health in the first 10 seconds of the battle, using mark of the rift and mark of death combined with thousand cuts. After that it's walk in the park. keep your mage out with fade step, keep your tank on guard and shield, rotate shield pop with mages. It's very easy once you get it.
