I gotta say....Blackwall's romance is quite possibly the best in the game. (HUGE SPOILERS)

I may be speaking out of turn here since I haven't QUITE experienced all the romances yet (28 people stopped reading here) but I don't see how Sera's romance could possibly top what I just witnessed with Blackwall's romance apex.  This is....impressive.  Seriously impressive.  I am almost kind of sad that even Cassandra's romance pales in comparison to this man's.  Let me elaborate on this.

For Cassandra, it's basically breaking her hard outer shell.  Then you romance her in the most medieval, chivalrous manner possible-by reading her a love poem on one knee and then lying with her in an open field.  That was great.  But the problem with it is....you don't really get to steer the outcome of it apart from choosing whether she becomes divine or not.  I mean, you can choose to break up with her but not in a meaningful way.  (more on that later)

Also, after you do the deed with her, the romance just sort of comes to a screeching halt.  Afterwards, you can walk up to her intermittently and ask to mack out in the blacksmith's but other than that....it just fizzles out.  Whereas there's content after the apex in Blackwall's romance.

In addition, unlike some of the other romances, Blackwall's carries an intense amount of gravitas, emotion, and pathos.  You find out Blackwall lied to you about his identity and can choose to be the jilted lover, the incredulous but still loving soul mate, or the "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" archetype.  This plays out beautifully in the jail cell and the interaction I saw between my Qunari female and Blackwall was just....stunning.  It tugged at the heart strings.   I NOPE'd so hard at some of the conversation choices I could have picked in response to him and I doubt I will ever be able to do that but that's what's so great about it! The romance carried WEIGHT.  It didn't just allow me to walk up to Blackwall while he was in the barn and say "let's break up."

It allowed me to discontinue the romance in a meaningful, RPG-style manner.  By giving me choices through a narrative!  I could either let him ROT in the jail cell, free him from the prison, shack back up with him, free him AND shack back up with him, or free him but reject his heartfelt plea!  These are the kinds of options we need to be seeing more of BioWare!

Then we have....romances like Cassandra...where there is not much conflict or....scenes where she is in deep emotional distress (scene with her confronting Varric comes close but not quite) throughout said romance.  You just flirt, have sex, and then she either becomes divine and dumps your sorry ass or doesn't become divine and....maybe...stays with you forever...perhaps?

Well, I agree in that I loved it. But everyone has different things they like in romances. Blackwall's was very dramatic and intense, so great if you like that. Which I do. So much. It was amazing. I laughed so hard but also feels.

His romance is definitely well developed, I agree. I haven't done it yet but I've watched it already . I think people feel really ripped off by Solas (who is my current romance on my 2nd play through) and I understand  <_<. I romanced Cullen and thought it was grade A what people have been wanting a long time. A romance that while it has troubles to overcome isn't going to just crash and burn because he's crazy or be broken up forever because: reasons. I think Cullen and Blackwall are the better romances and Solas is just burning with unrequited love  :D

I have romanced Josephine and Sera, loved them both in different ways. Happy to see others enjoying the romances, feel like a lot of bashing has been going on lately! Stuck between Blackwall and Solas for next playthrough. Blackwall is awesome, but I feel like if I don't romance Solas with my female elf I might never do it!

Eh....yeah, now that I rethink that, I probably could have left that part out.  Oh well.  Didn't mean anything by it.

Sadly, I can't bring myself to play a female due to that bizare and ineffectual looking running animation, but that does sound interesting. It was rather disappointing that there were so few conversations regarding the relationship after the wonderful courting scene. I at least would have liked to have chosen a series of increasingly inventive locations to make out, lol. Cassandra likes it when you make an effort. ;)

I can only imaging how pissed off my female inquisitor would be. My male one very nearly let him hang, didn't put him in a party for a long time and was quite cutting in conversation.

Oh, I liked it too.  But after seeing Blackwall's romance it's sort of like....trying on a 3 karat diamond....and then immediately trying on a 15 karat diamond right after.  It just doesn't compare.  Or something.

It was definitely interesting.

Gave some very conflicted feels by the end of it. Not in a bad way, in a very...gutwrenching sort of way.

Not sure I'd do it again, but I don't regret my first playthrough went that route.

I haven't romanced Blackwall yet, but I definitely plan on it.

In any case, it's a bit like people in DAO saying that Morrigan and Alistair's romances were "better" than Leliana's and Zevran's. Whether you want schmoopy fluff or drama and angst... it all comes down to taste. Certainly glad BW's romance resonated with you, though!

No ******, I like Blackwall too. Pause.

Wow, so I can't say "h-o-m-o milk" without being censored, huh? Racist against Canadians.

I'm afraid I've seen enogh of other game forums to know why it occurred to you to do so.

Well they're not really suppose to compare, every romance should be different in their own way

But...it is requited.   Do you mean "unconsummated"? Because that's left open to interpretation.

I can see you not liking it if you just want a normal, drama-free romance for once (and Cullen delivers excellently in that regard), but there are a lot of layers to Solas's romance. It's adorably sweet and sad and wistful, and it makes the main story a lot more poignant.

I'll play female one day just to let Blackwall die there. I need a romance to end that way.

I'm certainly leaning that way, but Blackwall needs lovin' too!

Yeah. I really appreciate how diverse the romances are this time around. There's a great spectrum of stories here.

Those races are booked out I'm afraid. I planned on playing 4 times, I romanced Josephine with a male human, Sera with a Female Dwarf, now I'm stuck between Blackwall or Solas for my female elf, then I'm stuck between Cass or Dorian for a male Qunari. Maybe I will make a female Qunari and pick Blackwall instead.

The Blackwall romance looks nice, but I've had my fill of my chosen past LI's (Alistair, Isabela, Anders) hiding stuff from me, so I'm finding myself not interested in it right now, Maybe sometime in the future.
