Then why are we allowed to "puppeteer" the other romances, hm?
We...aren't? The romances are written, and then we're allowed to make choices within those relationships. Whether to encourage Cass to become Divine, for example.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love the story, and I love the character. If I didn't, I wouldn't be so worked up.
What I hate the most is that any conclusion to this romance is gated behind a big fat "maybe" and another purchase, just like with Morrigan. As it stands, I love what they did with "Witch Hunt" and Morrigan!
This only happens to this degree when characters have significant roles to play that differ from what a player might wish in terms of their relationshop. They aren't doing it to be mean, but because they're important.

Ah, so you're upset at the lack of closure. I get that.
It's hard not to feel awful after that Alone on the Balcony Scene at the end.
However, I think getting closure later has the potential to make it an even better story than if we'd gotten closure at the end of Inquisition. Of course, it could also make things worse. We can't be sure yet. I guess that's why it's so frustrating being really invested in that relationship right now.
Can we get back on topic here, guys? Kinda derailing the thread. It is to compare the different romances, not to complain. If you have complaints, set up a thread in the feedback section.
I have yet to find a romance that I haven't loved. Solas's was sad, yes. But also beautiful. And I can't wait to see what happens next with it. As far as him not getting fair treatment as a romance, perhaps. I think most people would love to have more content from him. But there's a fine line between spoiling the big reveal at the end, and giving him more content. You can ask him a few times when things seem.. Odd. And while he acknowledges them, he moves right on by.
Cullen's was sweet, and he and the Quizzy seem to be headed for wedding bells.
He genuinely loves her, and seems awed at the fact that in the middle of all these awful things. They were able to meet. Especially with a mage Quizzy.
And Blackwall.. I didn't think much of him before I flirted with him. But oh man. He gets you right in the feels. He adores the Quizzy, and you can feel it. She means a lot to him. I went into this further on the Blackwall thread, and I'll try to do it justice below in the spoilers.
I'll just leave one more thought here.
If Cullen were to dump the inquisitor at the end no matter what she did due to predetermined "reasons", this thread would be completely redundant.
"Oh, but it didn't, because it doesn't fit his character!" People, you are forgetting that this story has probably had a billion iterations already and can be changed at the whim of the bean counters at EA.
Nothing about DA is set in stone until the writers decide to make it so. If the EA bean counters or Fox or whatever came hard down on the Cullen romance, suddenly "what fit his character" yesterday would be nothing more than a sad memory.
I've only done the romance with Cassandra so far and it was awesome. Humorous AND romantic. Got in a little trouble for flirting a little too much with Josie without serious intent and that was so realistic, it reminded me of some uncomfortable RL convos I've both dealt out and recieved, lol. It was beautifully, sadly awkward.
Tiellis: (spoilers for Origins)
I've only played Blackwall's romance so far. I thought it was really good, especially around the "Revelations" part of the arc. However, I think it needed a few more scenes here and there to cement it. The content felt just a little too sparse. I felt like my Inquisitor got to know Cullen better and forged a sounder bond with him in spite of never flirting with him, compared to doing the full romance with Blackwall and taking him in her party every time she went anywhere. There seemed to be more content even for Cullen's friendship path. It could just be my perception of things, though.
Alistair (king) -- can become mistress or queen, if you don't like being his mistress, you can roll another race or leave him as a Warden
If you're playing unspoiled, which I think is ideal, there's no way to know when you're creating your character who'll be able to romance or how it'll turn out. No point saying "roll another race" when one is already 70+ hours in. Can't be his mistress if you didn't choose the "hardening" option after Goldanna, the dialogue for which is quite counter-intuitive. And leaving him as a Warden doesn't make sense for some people. My city elf felt like Anora was out of touch with the alienage population, but Alistair would be good for them. If I reloaded and made him not be king, I'd just be metagaming. So my character got dumped and her heart got broken. The Solas romance is thus hardly the first one to do it. But I absolutely stand by Bioware's writing on this (apart from the hardening dialogue, which really needed to be clearer).
You hated mhairi? She was in the game for like, 10 minutes!I hate this guy. I have only ever hated one DA companion before and she (thankfully) snuffs it during her joining in DAA.
I think maybe he reminds me of her a bit. Acting like they are Wardens, that being one is some honorable and noble achievement, when they have no clue what they are on about. Eugh. Take your moral high ground and shove it.
Still, I am not one to hate a character without giving them a fair chance. I've started up a playthrough with him as my main warrior to see if I come to like him any better. Its currently not going too successfully because I'm also bringing Viv and she is hilariously awful to him. I'm am loving her right now.
I'm usually a fan of the disastrous relationships as well. But when someone like him says he's no good for me, I don't really feel like arguing otherwise.

Also, isn't she voiced by femquiz's VA?
On topic, BLackwell drove me away after using his "I'm no good for you" line. The last time I ignored that warning my BF blew up a Chantry.
Vivienne sufferd from the Anders effect when she asked me to get her ingredients and refused to say why. I said no, lol.
I think we can all agree player agency in RPGs is one of those eternal conundrums that will never be completely balanced the way writers and players want. Personally, if I had it my way, every romance in every BioWare game would be like Blackwall's. You could steer it in any direction you wanted. You could have it end happily, or have it end sadly. That's the beauty of Blackwall's romance. It had its own narrative but it gave you agency WITHIN that narrative!
Whereas if you make Cass The Divine inadvertently....TOUGH LUCK, your ass gets dropped harder than a ton of bricks! You have no say in it. Cassandra obviously cares more about the Chantry than she does you. Then again, I don't plan on making her Divine in any of my playthroughs in which I'm romancing her ever again. So there is still some agency there.

Haha, it hardened my resolve to have my way with him. My thinking was more or less "I already dated a terrorist, you could not POSSIBLY be worse. COME AT ME, BRO."

So what's the verdict? Better or worse than Anders? ![]()
I really need to flirt with Blackwall this next run. Haven't even tried yet. Torn on making a human or a Qunari for him. I'm worried that the animations might be weird for a qunari.

The reverse happened with me. My Hawke took Anders at his word in DA2 and didn't continue their nascent romance (I think they'd maybe flirted twice), instead choosing Fenris. Part of my decision that my Inquisitor would persist in romancing Blackwall came from the desire not to do the same thing in two games.

It's not that she doesn't care about you, it's that she thinks she can make a difference and believes it to be her duty. I'm sure she wishes it wasn't a job where celibacy was a requirement. Think of it from her point of view She's a very passionate woman who feels that she has no choice but to condemn herself to a passioness and no doubt lonely existence. Of course, I didn't know that was the case until now. ![]()

Hmm. Let's say it was just different. But similar.
Also make a dwarf for him. Make a dwarf. <cough>
Also make a dwarf for him. Make a dwarf. <cough>
I did this yesterday and I do not regret it.
Took me like, five rerolls to finally decide who I wanted to romance him with.
Why a dwarf? I mean I picked dwarf because I figured she'd be more likely to be forgiving, but any other reason?
Just looks cute to me, personally. I like the height difference and I prefer the not-so-nice background. Compliments his well, if you play it right.

Because dwarves are freaking awesome. Also I looked hilarious dancing with him.
(and yes, the shady background works nicely with his, but I didn't know that at the time)
I picked a dwarf for him because I love dwarven ladies, but also, there's that thing Dorian's always going on about. I imagine Blackwell hugs feel awesome. He's a big guy, and probably kinda hairy. ![]()
Also, as others have said...
I may be speaking out of turn here since I haven't QUITE experienced all the romances yet (28 people stopped reading here)
You didn't romance Solas, did you ?
And you probably haven't finished the game because Solas....
