Hold Position and you

Alright so I've been banging my head to the wall on several ocassions. Here's my problem:

With characters having abilities and passives that are directly affected by the character's position (higher ground, greater distance to target = more damage) it's super importat to keep them STILL!!!

So, how do you make a character hold a position throughout an entire battle and keep attacking at the same time? I've tried double right clicking on a spot to hold it, and it works, but then, the minute I give an attack order to that same character he'll stay and attack from there only for a short period of time. He'll move again after a few seconds (maybe when the current target dies?) and thus the banging of my head ensues.

My current AI is set to follow himself (I'm trying to do this with Varric).

Should I try defend himself? I heard this AI will sometimes have characters literally just standing still and not attacking.

Many thanks...!

Also... is there a good documentation on how exactly each AI behaves? I've found it super frustrating to have to go through forums to find answers that sometimes will just contradict...

you're not the only one having issues with holding your party in positions you want them to be in.

The attack order overrides the hold position order, try giving a hold position then after the fight has started use left click to get him to target an enemy, rather than right click. I haven't tried it, but that should mean he targets that enemy for as long as he is able, with AI settings taking over if it moves out of LoS or range.

If you are right click, you are basically giving a hunt-kill order.

Hope that works

I find putting your followers on follow in lieu of defend they tend to behave better.  I'll put everyone on follow my preferred tank Then my tank on Defend Controlled Character.  That seems to have them behave a bit better but no matter what you do your ranged characters will continue to close in on targets for god knows what damned reason.

It's annoying but it's made me a better killer.  Kill stuff fast so as to make the headache of micro management minimal.

This is exactly how I have set up my party too.
