Because people will like/dislike different characters.

And no, she's not.

I found blackwall boring like sebastian in 2. Hell even varric mentions this.

blackwall is boring unless you have sera and solas in your party with him.

Sera is grand as a tempest and she is the clown the inquisition needs...unless you get your own personal jester with bad shoes.

Man, Blackwall was my go-to tank. I brought him every time unless Cassandra had a specific quest she needed to be around for.

I loved Blackwall right from the moment I met him in the Hinterlands. He really shines with Sera in the party, since they're totally BFFs. Dorian and Blackwall also have some great interactions. Not as funny as Sera, but Dorian and Blackwall really just irritate one another for much of the game, before coming to a kind of mutual understanding of one another and trying to give the other a chance.

Also, Sera is ****** awesome.

Took me a bit to warm to Blackwall, partly because I made the mistake of finding bits of his quest without having him along.  It does have an affect on your standing with him in the long run and he becomes a bit adversarial.  But I redid that bit and I've found I do like him more than I thought I would.  It just takes a bit to see all his sides.  He now comes along on my travels more often than not.

Sera has to be the first Bioware character I absolutely can't get along with.  I'm always about the big picture which results in nothing but disfavor with her.  It's not that I don't like her.  It is a very real personality conflict which has led to the non-stop offer for me to boot her in every conversation.  So I don't have her on outings with Blackwall.  Dorian is the perma-team member and he fights constantly with Blackwall.  Nasty, under-the-belt sorts of childishness that is more amusing than not.

i love blackwall. he is a beast tank. i've solo'd dragons with him after everyone else has died in the party a couple times lol. i romanced him too. even after i found out the whole story, he was too valuable to make any choice that would remove him.

Blackwall surprised me a lot - he was so much layered than I initially assumed. I chose to romance him with my Adaar, and I haven't regretted it. His personal backstory was great, he's a great tank who only went down a few times when my whole party wiped due to my own incompetence and his romance was very down to earth and sincere (especially after the reveal).

Great companion, great writing, great voice!

I don't like that he pretends to be a warden. I had a feeling something was off on my first playthrough when he essentially gave you the nod and smile treatment when it came to questions about darkspawn or warden corruption. The guy is nothing but a shameful poser.

combine Blackwall with Sera and he becomes fun - also, at the camp, ask him about the other party members - hillarious

Blackwall is like a rollercoaster.

Totally underrated. He's like the Anders of DA:I, I can see why some people would dislike him.

Not me, tho. But I'd say after the main surprise everything goes downhill pretty quick.

I don't like him mainly because of the reveal in his personal quest. Not cool man, not cool. This time I left him to rot.

Sera is not so much overrated as she is an elaborate experiment by Bioware to create the most terrible companion ever, and see if there are people silly enough to still fawn over her.

Haven't done Blackwall's romance, but his standard storyline is awesome. I completely understand why there are some people that won't forgive him for what he's done, but I have a hard time not sympathizing with him. His regret is obviously genuine.

Blackwall is too fake to me.

I already know his secret, but it just is way too obvious after a while. I remember I finally got the key to Valammar in the Hinterlands (Dwarven smuggling ring hideout), and:

Spoiler

Basically his fake persona was too obviously fake, and it's hinted at not so subtly by the game multiple times. I respect that he was basically always pro-doing the right thing (unlike say... Sera or Iron Bull), but he just was boring. I found Cassandra to be a more compelling "doing the right thing" companion, and she fills the same role.

FWIW I beat the game with Blackwall as a companion, but by the end I was tempted to switch him out for Cassandra, I just wanted to beat the game with a completely different set of companions (Varric+Cassandra+Dorian -> Sera+Blackwall+Solas).

Also, Champion is pretty unkillable, it's nice knowing at least one of my companions will never guzzle potions despite the occasionally stupid AI (just set walking fortress to preferred and he'll never need to drink a potion sans boss battles). However regardless once you get the tier 3 armor from hissing wastes any S&S warrior is basically unkillable.

TL;DR: Blackwall's not that much better than Cassandra at his role (at least for the hard part of the game, pre-Skyhold, he's the exact same). Meanwhile Cassandra is a more compelling character.

Next playthrough I'll just make Iron Bull a S&S warrior.

Blackwall is my entenral benchwarmer, only coming out to play when I'm doing his quest. I see no reasons to use him over Bull and Cass.

I agree but I'm biased.  Terribly, terribly biased.

It's YMMV situation.  I think they've given us too many awesome characters and people have preferences.  I mean I love Varric and Cass, but I have to say both have been left behind quite a bit because I want Cole and Sera and IB and Blackwall around and poor Solas, I want him around, but Dorian, glorious, glorious Dorian.  Gah choices!

@ Engineer Ed, it might be interesting to see how it plays out 2nd playthrough knowing it all now.  I'm not sure I can take him to Adamant now, but I can't call him fake, nope, can't do that.

Agreed, you can easily tell in the way he responds. It's laughable really, I couldn't take the man seriously. He's such a try hard.

Blackwall has been a great tank for me during my first couple of starts with the game....I always start over.  60 hours in with my 3rd character and I am starting over again.

While Blackwall has always performed great, I am hoping to build a better tank out of Cassandra (better than she is at the beginning, not a better tank than Blackwall, I know that won't happen) for this run and free myself of this feeling that I NEED Blackwell to survive.  I really like his story and everything, but I am bored with him.

For me it's knowing about the thing which ruined him for me on other playthroughs. At nearly every word that comes out of his mouth, my brains just automatically goes you are so full of pigeon crap, shush it you. And so I just leave him behind. But he was likeable enough the first playthrough and his party banter with Cole was great.

So, so much this. I literally cannot stand that guy. I've tried to have him in my team a couple of times but every single time he starts to badmouth others, especially Dorian (really badly) and that leads to my inquisitor making a sharp u-turn and kicking him back to Skyhold so fast it makes his head spin. I wish there was an option to tell him to shut the ----- up, instead of the "we need to work together" option. Also, he is so depressing to have around that there really should be an antidepressant potion available for everyone in Skyhold.

Everytime I read an "I hate Blackwall" post, it reminds me to go to quartermaster Dennet and see if he's supplying any high horses that everyone seems to be riding on.
