I hope that vioware will take a look at Blizards' garrison feature.
I'm just agreeing with everybody here that I also expected more of the Skyhold.

Upgrading the garden... three whole new pots to plant seeds in. Woohoo! ![]()
That was my first and last upgrade. Didn't really bother with the fetch quests after that. The only Skyhold customization that I liked was the throne. My ass needed to be seated on an awesome throne. ![]()

That's the one part I haven't understood so far. I'm the Inquisitor, not a king or even a lord. Why do I need a throne? I get that some people worship me because they believe I'm the herald of Andraste... but at which point does that legally elevate me above everyone else?
Did all the nobles and all the rulers of Thedas accept me as their peer? Did they acknowledge me? Alistair and Anora kind of kicked me out of Redcliff, it didn't feel like they saw me as an equivalent to a king.

It gets better if you are a quanari. All of a sudden everyone puts their full trust in you, no questions asked. Given the history of the quanari people, this is highly unlikely.

It would make more sense if they gave me a role similiar to a general. A powerful leader but not a ruler.
Exactly what I was thinking. Why did they clean up my room, added nice, new furniture... but didn't even bother to remove the bricks from the stairs leading up to my chambers?
There are holes in the walls, can't they patch that up? Perhaps slap some wooden boards over it at first, then fix it properly at a later time.
Upgrading Skyhold felt very disappointing. A new courtyard... but after making my choice, I couldn't see a difference. A few days later I stumbled into my new "hospital". Wow. Totally worth it. -.-
I bet most people chose the herb garden because the chantry garden? Completely pointless.
That I am disappointed now means I didn't lower my expectations enough after playing DA2, ME3 and SW:TOR. I should have known better.
Ah man, I expected these would be patched up as I progressed through the main story. Is that not the case? Major bummer

Which makes the Qunari, as an Inquisitor, a very poor plot device. I never saw a Qunari Inquisitor as a viable choice in Human/Elf/Dwarf controlled lands. Thedas Lore depicts the Quanari as Invaders of which you need an Exalted March to defeat them....
BIO blew this one, in my view.
I don't understand what the point of upgrading the skyhold is.. if they didn't even implement that I would not have even been bothered. as the poster said maybe giving the player schematics or items or shops for what they upgrade. also id like upgrades that can be done to all the keeps. more upgrades like adding customization turrets, catapult.
There is so much potential in Skyhold that I can't help but believe BioWare simply ran out of time. There's an entire wing under the library, made up of a small study/library and what could easily be used as a gallery (with what looks like a paragon statue). I literally stumbled upon these rooms in my second playthrough. And then I wondered what the point of it all was.
It's the illusion of choice. You get to pick A or B and then the game pretends it mattered. I still don't see why we can't fix Skyhold completely.
There are a quite a few curious things about Skyhold anyway. Vivi lives on a balcony overlooking the throne room and the courtyard on the other side. Which means anyone there can see her, too. Doesn't she need privacy? Is she an exhibitionist? Solas is almost the same, everyone in the library and rookery can look down at him at all times.
Where are my people sleeping? I know Cullen, Vivi and perhaps Sera have a bed and I found some places where my workers and soldiers sleep but what about Varric, Leliana, Dorian, Josephine or Cassandra?
Skyhold never gets finished, it doesn't even get cleaned up properly. Which is kind of disappointing.
Bull clearly has a one of the rooms in the tower. His lovescene shows you in it.
But yeah not sure about the rest.

The PC doesn't follow the qun and Vasoth mercenaries exist.
Also everyone doens't put their full trust in you no. But it's fairly obvious your character isn't a member of the religion which would be the true problem.
Agreed, Skyhold needs an overhaul, and frankly, it should have had one before release. Getting one as DLC will feel tacked on, by definition.
Given the huge deal they made about Skyhold in the promotion and runup to the game, and within the game's narrative itself, it seems very strange that it has considerably less customisation options than the Normandy in ME, aside from some cosmetic options in the Great Hall.
Easy ideas for improvements abound:
- Unique schematics or items tied to the substantive requisition upgrades built (i.e. tower, courtyard, garden)
- New, minor NPC introduced (e.g. templar captain or mage scholar; drill sergeant or doctor; herbalist or revered mother)
- Bonus at War Table (reduced mission times, new missions e.g. "find a master drill sergeant")
- Character bonus similar to Inquisition Perk (e.g. 5% damage boost to all party members if you build the training grounds, 10% improved healing from potions if you build herb garden, 5% magic resistance boost if you build templar tower, 5% shorter cooldowns if you build mage tower)
- New, unique companion scenes (even very short) dependent on upgrade built (training in the ring with Iron Bull, debating magic theory with Dorian in the Mage Tower, talking theology with Cassandra in the Chantry garden, etc.)
I would hunt down every friggin quarry - secure every single logging site. Gather 100 of every rare herb. I will pay 10,000 friggin gold. JUST PLEASE LET ME CHANGE THE OUTFIT I WEAR IN SKYHOLD.
Thinking about the upgrades again I have to wonder: Why can't we have both choices? It's not like they even occupy the same space. Why not have training grounds and the infirmary? Both mage and templar tower? Even the useless chantry garden has enough space left for a few extra pots with herbs.
Why not make the clean up and repairs of Skyhold an upgrade, too? Yes, Gatsi said something about not being able to repair everything because of ... reasons.... but I am sure it's possible to at least patch the roof of Cullen's room. I doubt the loose bricks littering my stairs are needed for the structural integrity of the keep either, so they better clean that crap up before I stumble over it and break my neck and where would their little Inquisition be then, mh?
Remember all the stuff we could do with Vigil's keep? I felt a lot more like a leader and ruler as the Warden Commander as I do as Inquisitor. Skyhold is in the middle of nowhere, shouldn't I be building a road? How about patrols? Where do I even get the food for my army? Oh, my advisors are taking care of all that without needing my input? Well, who's actually in power then? Am I just their puppet, sitting on my throne in my silly pajamas?
Although what good is a fully upgraded keep if it's never attacked? I might as well camp in the woods for all the difference it makes.
The very first upgrade that I did was choosing between whether to make the courtyard a sparring arena or retain it for refugee usage. The only noticeable result when I opted for the latter, was that the surgeon and her charges moved into a "room" rather than remain outside. The tents were left standing regardless?
That waste of my resources and poor climax scuttled any additional Skyhold UPGRADES for me!
I dont know if this is a bug or not but..
You know all the books thats around Skyhold? The ones you can pick up for a quest or whatever? I had to upgrade infirmary before I could pick it up - When the place was a ruin it was inposible to do so. And there's two more (one behind Cole and one it the Inqusitiers bedroom balcony) I cant pick up. Pretty sure I have to upgrade Skyhold in some way before I can do it.

That's a bug. You can simply go to some other location like the Hinterlands, then come back to Skyhold and you can pick up every single book again. And again after each time you travel. Isn't that awesome?

Do I pick up some sarcasm there?
Anyway, you got it right for all exept three books: The one in the infirmary, the one behind Cole and the one on the balcony. I have enough of the others to start my own library, but those three (two now) others are just imposible for me to pick up no matter how many times I tries. And after 90 hours spent in the game so far Ive tried quite a few times

Well, it doesn't really matter though. You could complete the quest just using the book behind the throne. I'm not even sure there are 48 of these books in Skyhold, I only found 42.

Another bug about those books... even after completing the quest, they are still lying around, triggering the search function. It's irritating.

That bug is in the queue to be fix.. patch 3 perhaps.

"Bug". Sure.
It's just another case where the quest rewards are pretty..unrewarding. DAI as a whole has a problem with this.

One room in the "basement" has a wine cellar. When you start collecting bottles they will appear in that room labeled with subtext. I kept expecting them to appear in the "closet" of your bedroom ...which has a similar appearance, but as far as I can tell ...no bottles. You can change the drapes (bought or earned or found during random quests). You can buy a new bed at the store in Orlais (same place to buy drapes and windows). But outside of the decor, your LI doesn't move in ...and from what I've seen so far - only Bull comes to visit.
It seems like these "extras" are just there to spend on overabundance of coin or herbs. Having played 100+ hours and purchased/used these upgrades in game ...IMHO - the garden/chantry, training ground/hospital, Templar/mage tower upgrades should have been saved for a DLC pack that included more fleshed out builds, extra quests to encourage exploration, weapon/armor spec and special piece of equipment, plus a trainer or other way to increase your skill points as appropriate to the upgrade. Some obvious choices would be the mage or Templar upgrades, but that could also apply to healing skills gained with the hospital or damage skills if you're a warrior because the healer could teach you weak spots on a dwarf, elf, qunari. The garden could give you increased poison knowledge (assassin/rogue), healing (mage), etc. The chantry could give you focus, Champion perks, etc. These are just random ideas, but hopefully Bioware takes a look and makes these promising fragments more useful.
It was funny when I got the "training area" upgrade I thought the courtyard would be filled with training equipment and solidiers fighting like in Haven training area with a bunch of tents and Cullen yelling at them. All I got was a puny little wodden fence around a 3 meter radius area with two guys fighting. Quarries and logging stands well spent. The Inquisition is truly a force to be reckoned with.

The rationale for the throne is, I believe, to project power. Judging while sitting in your throne enforces the perception of the Inquisitor's power.
Personally, the two default thrones lacks majesty. I have not unlocked the others.... no reason to.
