I think I know what it is: his nose. It gives him character. I don't know why, but comparing the two Alistair's just more fun.
Cullen's a boss though so I like him better. He's got bigger balls than Alistair.

Tough one... I actually started a fem Surana Origins playthrough with the intention of romancing Zevran, and found myself flirting with Alistair starting from Ostagar... I am pretty sure the only way I will avoid romancing Cullen is if I play a Qunari
It would have to be Cullen, though. More mature, more endearing, nothing cringe-worthy ![]()
Both?
Both of them are great, but Alistair will always have that special space in my heart
my goofball lol

'Nuff said. ![]()

I adore Alistair, but Cullen wins this one. I think over all Cullen is a better, more developed character and his romance is more fleshed out I guess you could say. Alistair romance always felt like it just kinda stopped. I felt none of that with Cullen. Also I enjoyed the fact that I could role play a shy/awkward character while romancing Cullen so that wins points in his favor too.
I like both, but Cullen's a huge win for me.
Reason: Alistair was much younger when we can romance him in DA:O. So he's much less mature than Cullen is 10 years later. Remember how shy Cullen was initially in Magi Origin in DA:O? If we get to romance Cullen back in DA:O he won't be as mature as he is now in DA:I.
Alistair's basically a much lighter person in DA:O, careless & funny & refuse to take responsibility to lead (he let the Warden to lead even if he's senior basically...). Cullen in DA:I is a more complex, heavier character (after what he had been through) & is in position of holding responsibility. It's not the same story, it's not the same stake.
Guess that if ever we get to romance Alistair in DA:I, he might be much more complex character & less of his careless self. Either as Warden or King, it's heavy responsability for 10 years straight

Plus, we as players are all five years older... Anyone five years younger than myself is a kid ![]()
Alistair was right for my Warden because she was bossy and liked wearing the pants in the relationship. Cullen was right for my Inq, because she liked Cullen's bad assery - it made her a little weak in the knees when he almost ripped off the head of the messenger on the battlements.
As much of an Alistairian I am, I think I'm more of a Cullenite now.
Cullen's romance has the automatic advantage from him being a hotter older man
and just being a more developed character in general.
Origins Alistair was too baby-faced for me, and while goofy and innocent is great for those that dig it, I gotta have my manly gentlemen. Commander of the Inquisition's forces? Stealing the first kiss? Making babies on top of work desks??? Yasssss.
Not to disregard Alistair's romance in any way, because it had wonderfully sweet and tender moments, and he is cute and funny. But Cullen's romance just hits more notes for me. It's sweet, it's romantic, it's silly, it's sexy, it's indulgent, and overall, very nicely developed.
I don't think the scribes would pull any of that "write something grateful" crap on Cullen. I love them both, but the way Cullen can go from being so hard when he's down to business, to so sweet with the Inq is just sexy.
All rightly -
I still adore Alistair. Of all 3 games, he is the only male LI that I can see myself with.
Besides, everyone knows Cullen's one true love is Amell. Oh sure, you might let him take you to Val Royeaux for a weekend but then you both deny anything happened when you get back.
In DAO I LOVED Alistair but yes....Zev was so much fun to romance as well... just like Cullen/Solas is in DAI....!
Alistair thought does it for me every single time, whenever i try to complete a romance with Zev I always go back to Al
I'm just really bummed they didn't give my warden Queen and Alistair much importance in DAI as they did for Hawke *sigh! ![]()
The storyline was much more complete in DAO so was the party banter ...I dunno some parts of DAI felt very rushed ..5 top missions? Really! Ugh.
Bioware kinda redeemed themselves with the Cullen romance!
As for DA2 Fenris for sure, never understood the appeal of anders ... ![]()
There are quite a number of things in this game that I believe are setting up the next one. That is one of those and it had to be the same in effect as stroud, so....
From a straight guy's perspective, Alistar was my canon warden's bro and many wardens i played with they were good friends. Whether my Warden was funny/sarcastic like him or serious but able to appreciate his lightheartedness. I never get a chance to really bro out with Cullen maybe because he is not an actual companion. So for me Alistar would be a superior character.
Despite the awkward-ness of both, it is comparing two completely different characters at different life-stages. Alistair was very young in DA:O. Cullen is in his mid-30s and has gone through the drama of the past two games. For me, Alistair will always be a favourite.
It is funny how Alistair is talked about as a goofy comedian - while those are the cute points, its the fact that that is often a front which makes him such an intriguing character.
I can't really compare them, they're written at different stages in their lives and in different ways. I loved that Alistair's romance was funny and naïve and adorable, and it suited my young Cousland warden. On the other hand, I love that Cullen's romance has the edge of maturity, and is a clever mix of passion and tenderness which in my opinion suits the older, more experienced Inquisitor. So... I don't really have a favourite from the two.
Wow, nicely put. That's what I was thinking as well. My Inquisitor would find Alistair (as he was in 9:30 Dragon) far too naive and perhaps a bit too innocent at first. It wouldn't preclude a friendship, but it would prevent a romance. Come to think of it, my Casteless in Origins was the same way. However, it suited my more sheltered human nobles and human mages.
Cullen would not work for my sheltered characters. The whole scene with him throwing the lyrium against the wall would have been too much for them to handle on an emotional level. Again, it wouldn't have precluded a friendship, even a close one, but that would have been enough to turn some of them away from the romance.
I've never considered myself a big Cullen fan. I never disliked the character, and I was curious about his potential growth in DA:I. Still, he was someone I could take or leave in Inquisitor prior to the game's release. Now my opinion of him has changed. I'm by no means a Cullenite, even though I do respect the hell out of that fanbase, but it's actually going to be tough on my second playthrough choosing between him and Blackwall.
Alistair set the bar too high. Cullen is nice but doesn't even come close.
I replayed some of the dialogue from DAO and noticed that Cullen was a puppy. Literally a little wee pup. His voice didn't carry weight like it does in DAI.
Cullen is much more intimidating now. He's got a big boot and not afraid to use it. It's throatier but I feel that the DAO Cullen comes up during the romance, just with a hell lot more confidence. He's just a much more richer character in DAI, for obvious reasons but if you...

I've also noticed that in this scene in particular, the Inquisitor eyes Cassandra first but once the swords are drawn she's reaching out to Cullen. He's obviously the bigger threat and when his sword's drawn it's game time! And that look of panic on his face. I'd like to think that he was worried for the little Inquisitor there.
BTW what is Cole holding? I'm trying to figure out...is that...a coaster?

Cullen also looks like he can protect my Trevelyan, I really got that feeling with this screen. He's actually not that much taller than a human female but some reason this angle makes him look huge and her tiny, literally the perfect height ratio. I could totally imagine her resting her head in that...fluff...of fur. LOL
With Alistair...yeaaaah I don't get that feeling at all. I never did. Maybe because my Warden Queen was a badass 2H warrior.
