From a straight guy's perspective, Alistar was my canon warden's bro and many wardens i played with they were good friends. Whether my Warden was funny/sarcastic like him or serious but able to appreciate his lightheartedness. I never get a chance to really bro out with Cullen maybe because he is not an actual companion. So for me Alistar would be a superior character.
Why isn't bromance an option in this game? I don't want a straight out romance like Zevran/Anders/Dorian; just a bromance, and Alistair is the perfect choice for that! Who else can I count on to watch out for me when I'm having a Blight-induced nightmare?
It is funny how Alistair is talked about as a goofy comedian - while those are the cute points, its the fact that that is often a front which makes him such an intriguing character.
Agreed. It's just that, some people hate how Alistair has a fear of responsibility (not wanting to be king and letting a junior Warden take the lead over him). But for me, that makes him more relatable. I may be a capable person myself, but I still prefer to be supporting the leader than being the leader, which is why in MMOs, I'm never the guild leader but I always strongly advise my guild leaders.

I prefer Cullen.
Alistair is my bro, but I never felt especially compelled to romance him. Cullen has become my favorite romance in all Dragon Age, even more than Merrill and Leliana.

Alistair was really cute, Cullen is much more mature, still silly sometimes but I have no feeling like it's a Alistair v. 2.0 romance with him (yet). Not silly enough! ![]()

Nah, "head on pike" quest
He ´s serious to the point of it being funny. Guess that humour ´s not really a part of his nature. (Not surprised after what he had been through)

Zevran.... Always and forever Zevran.
If I HAD to choose between just the two though, Cullen. Alistair was a bit too "Whatever you want, yes ma'am" for me.

Cullen. He's much more competent and together than Alistair. Alistair strikes me as a very weak king as well. Plus I'll never forgive him for thinking it was alright to flirt with my Warden in Origins after my Warden called him out on hiding his background. Bad move dude.

Cullen for me.
I've been waiting on him since DA:O. But I really enjoyed Alistair too.

Alistair. And not only because of "first love" effect. Cullen as a character has some complications making his romance less attractive (to me, of course). First, he is just another awkward-virgin-paladin. Alistair was at the beginning of that archetype and was so damn good that every next character is trying VERY hard not to repeat him and inevitably fails. Like that dialog with Cullen about templar's vows of chastity - almost repeat the same from one with Alistair. Or that wicked grace game, the scene is practically written for Alistair all remarks including.
Cullen is too secondary to Alistair and has too little definition of himself for me to take him as an independent totally different romance.
(Just in case - can I say again IMHO somewhere? Think I did not emphasis it enough. And the subject is too sensitive
)

I prefer Alistair. Of course Cullen is more mature because we're romancing him 10 years later in DAI. He was young and had much growing up to do just like Alistair in DAO.
But not because I think one character is better than the other, or anything like that. Alistair is just really special to me, he was my first romance in Dragon Age. Also, the lighthearted attitude and sense of humor is definitely more my thing than Cullen's sullen, serious nature. I like someone I can laugh with. In essence, what made Alistair so imperfect (his insecurity, defensive humor, and hesitation to lead), made me connect with him more and made his character seem so human.

TBH the perfect Char would have the sense of humor of Alistair and his hair
the deepness and experience of Cullen, the charm and sass of Zevran and the wit and drama of Solas

Er, why is this an "or" question? You romance each with different characters.
I was asking your preference if you could only romance one

Alistair does have sweet moments in his romance (and funny dialogue) but I vastly prefer Cullen as an overall character.

Cullen all the way. Alistair is just a bratty, whiny man child with deep seated issues. Cullen knows how to move forward in spite of what he's been through, has a selfless, duty comes first mentality and has a more mature personality overall. He's also grown more in terms of character development.

To be fair, Alistair was only 20 years old when we got to experience his romance arc/character in full. Yes, he was essentially a child and acted so, but he did move forward just as Cullen did. Cullen had his share of deep seated issues that took him until DAI to work out, and he'll tell you that, too. He was very young, scared, and impressionable back in the Circle Tower in DAO, for just as legit reasons as Alistair was insecure and naive due to his confusing past. I think they've both matured nicely.
I think many people are saying Cullen is more mature but not really thinking about how much time has passed between these games. DAO Cullen was not the amazing, mature leader he is now in DAI. Nor was Alistair the responsible and dedicated king/warden he can be now before his experiences with the warden and stopping the blight.

Some of us still remember Alistairs pissing spat at the Landsmeet and his naivity for wardens very clearly ![]()

I romanced Alistair in my first two DA:O playthroughs and then couldn't anymore. I like him as a character, but not as a love interest. It feels too much like puppy love. Cullen's romance has a maturity to it that I didn't expect and find preferable. (And I'm in the not-a-virgin camp with regard to Cullen.)

Yeah, I can remember that as well. Like I said, he was young and I definitely don't deny his issues in DAO. He was quite immature and had growing up to do.
The problem is we're comparing a non-developed DAO Alistair at the age of 20 to a fully-developed, older Cullen in DAI. Just trying to point out they both had problems to work through. ![]()

I love Alistair, but seeing him much more mature in DA:I (as a grey warden in my pt) made me feel that a mature Alistair who doesn't throw tantrums the moment something doesn't go his way would have made a far better LI.
Cullen is definitely growing on me, I like him as advisor.
I can totally agree with you there.

If I'm answering the question directly I'd pick Cullen, because he is older, more mature and does not throw tantrums. Also he is more reliable.
Origins Alistair is too immature and unreliable.

I really loved having Alistair as a romance. He was funny and sweet, but, most importantly, the lines didn't make me gag, like they have in other RPGs. Absolutely love the voice actor, as well.
I romanced Anders for DA:2, but some lines were a little cheesy. I really liked Ander's model and voice, but it was sort of sad to play through at times.
For DAI, I picked Cullen, but I miss having a romance companion by my side, making comments, etc. Cullen is a man, whereas the others needed some growing up in their respective ways. It's different, and I haven't completed the romance, but I am interested. Solas is too "elfy" for my inquisitor; even though she's an elf. Maybe I'll do Solas next time, just because he's a party member and is agreeable with the choices I make.
Overall, definitely Alistair. For an elven mage, though, I'd have liked some different options for the end of the romance & landsmeet outcomes.

Origins Cullen wanted me to kill Irving and the rest of the mages just to be "safe".
From what little we can glimpse of DAI Alistair's personality, I'd say that he has matured while retaining his lovable dorky side. Go ahead read and dissect the war board quests involving Alistair, if you don't know what I'm talking about.
