Hey all! I'm wondering if there's a legitimate non-exploit way of farming essence or other materials for runes like one would with elfroot and drakestone.

I have come to realize that making and finding runes in Inquisition is not like it was in Dragon Age: Origins/Awakening and Dragon Age: 2. It seems to take a lot more to make runes. I played for 40 hours before restarting (for reasons) and I'd like to make runes for my weapons more often. I find it strange you can get the frost rune schematic really early in the game, but can't make it without getting enough frost essence.

In my first playthrough of 40 hours, I barely got enough red lyrium to make one Corruption rune, and never got enough frost or fire essence to make a single rune.

I've looked online and in this forum, and I don't really see much about farming essence outside of exploits. I figured BioWare would put some way to create runes in the game somewhat easily. At least have an enemy that persistently respawns that allows you to create runes. Otherwise, I'd feel compelled to never use my essence "just in case" I find a weapon I *really* want to use a rune on.

they are scarce by nature as you progress along the game.  unless you want to farm rift or all demons spawn points you encounter.

Are there demon spawns that don't go away that aren't rifts? Because I like closing the rifts. It'd feel weird and unnatural to leave a rift open just to farm it. :/ (and i don't even know if that would work)

Where can I get those giant spider glands? I have tried a few spots on the Storm Coast and that cave in the Forbidden Oasis and in maybe 30 minutes of fighting spiders I only got 1 giant spider gland. I need 6 for dragon slaying runes.

Just keep failing the dwarven puzzle in the Hissing waste, everytime you fail, the game throws demons at you. Dunno if they drop high grade essence tho,

IIRC essence is drop from closing Rift. So yeah, it's rare.

Ugh, that's totally lame. They really should have made it slightly easier. Or at the least make it difficult/rare, but give you a possible respawning enemy to farm them from.

There are a few demon spawns around. There's one in the Hinterlands near the Dragon. As for spider glands I usually farm spiders in the caves or SE near the bottom of the map.

Rune materials does seem rare this time around. Maybe it was meant that way. I don't mind too much because I usually craft a nice weapon and keep it for a long while.

The demons spawn consistently after the dragon is slain?

I'm unsure if they constantly spawn, but they were there just like other mobs roaming the place. I didn't feel the need to kill them, but I'm sure they'll respawn just as the dragonlings (?) did before you kill the dragon.
