Until now, my 2H warrior has been running around in psychedelic armor (it's silverish, pink, green, red, etc according to the lighting I guess). I'm tired of it.

Well, he's a Templar and just found templar armor in a chantry cave. But it's armor stat is 143 to my present 169. It has no slots but a respectable plus 20 magic defense and a 5 spirit defense.

Also, I found heavy warden armor (111 AR). Blackwall present armor is better.

I do this about 95% of the time across all RPG games I play. Unless the armor/weapon is so horrible that I'll lose so much damage or die because the armor is too weak, then I'll gladly switch out. If my character doesn't look the way I want it too it makes playing a drag. Sadly this game has horrible armor options and they all pretty much look the same. I'm almost done with it though, so I'm fighting through the pain.

Yup. Maybe not to the point where I'd have the characters running in starter level gear, but 20-30 points of defense/attack isn't too hard tradeoff if it means really good looks. The game remains perfectly playable even if you let the gear trail behind quite a bit (like 4-5 levels worth of stats) and that's usually enough time to find/craft another decent looking replacement. That's on hard difficulty, the margin may be narrower on nightmare but I'm too lazy to play at that.

Absolutely. I would only sacrifice looks for min/max if it was necessary to do so.

no.  unless it was so small the difference wouldn't really matter.

Yes, looks determine what items I might prefer, but its not like its that important.  I'm not going to lose 20dmg on my weapon cuz it isn't a prettier silver and has some jewels in it or whatever.

Yes, within reason. I've worn epic pink armor because the stats were better than anything I had on hand, but if I was about to trigger one of the major story lines with long cutscenes, I'd make a companion trade armor with me so I wouldn't cringe watching my character.

I'm sacrifice everything for look and challenge on my third run. The game is not hard if you know the fights and enemies. There is no difference between nightmare and casual at lvl10+ if you really min-max. I have done this on my second run.

I think the game is much more fun if you cripple yourself a little bit to get at least some challenges in the later game. The first levels up to lvl 8 can be hard and you will need everything you can find but at lvl10+ you can start to run naked (or the disired look) if you wish.

The only real good looking armors in the game are for rogues (even if they are mostly the same, but at last they are good looking with the sleeves etc.). Warriors armors are really ugly and in fact I couldn't finish my warrior's playthrough after being accustomed to Rogue sets.

Some mage armor sets are moderately good looking also.

Where are the good looking rogue armors? I can't stand the "hunter" look.

Yes, and while crafting I will first find the colors I want to use, and then decide the stats. If I have to go to tier2 materials instead of tier3, to get that color I want, it is fair game.

Looks over stats, every time, ever since KOTOR (Dark Jedi Master robe over Qel-Droma Robes FTW).

Bioware have gotten better at matching stats to looks over the years, though.

What?! Are you telling me pink heavy armor is not fabulous and fitting for a killing machine?!

On a serious note: The Grey Warden armor is cool, some mages armor looks decent(Yay for fedora-like-hats!) and rogues got some pretty badass one. Right from the get go in Haven Rogues get the best deal!

Naturally it is subjective if you like that style or not but in itself the Hunter/Scout Armor IS fitting for a rogue (with the sleeves, leather etc.).

For warriors there are not many real heavy looking armors as in DA:O, instead. The only decent looking one in this sense is the Templar Armor but you get the schematic only from mid game onwards.

Yup, Cassandra wore an under-leveled piece of armour for most of the game because I couldn't find any better armours/schematics that used her trench coat model.

I also never put Varric in anything that didn't have his 'duster' coat, whether it had better stats or not.

Looks over performance for me as well. I'm going to miss my Reaver's sword once it gets outclassed but for now I'm keeping it. Besides he's doing crazy damage as he is with whirlwind + aura of pain + passive that regens stamina with a critical hit.

Yes. Min-maxing trivializes the game way too much.

Eh.... What?

The concept of min/maxing is to trivialize a game too much. No game is built for optimization, because few people do it. We make our own challenges.

The point behind min-maxing is being as efficient as you can. Whether the game is still a challenge at that point has nothing to do with it.

Regarding min-maxing and trivializing the game: it's your call if you enjoy killing things compared to actually fighting them. If you manage (in whatever combination of cheese / gear level / spec / party composition / buffs & debuffs etc) to kill stuff outright in most encounters, then HP, resists, armor rating etc are unimportant. Why do you need to craft a better chest if you never get hit? Why would you do the Oasis shards quests if you never care about taking magic damage etc.

For me fighting is fun, killing stuff in same way over and over is not.

Regarding OP: yes looks are more important than extra armor / damage. That's why sometimes I will use bleed on hit in mastery slot to get the color I like - for example - despite it's bugged or plain bad compared to other stats.

For a weapon, no, for armor, yes. I am one of those girls who partly plays games because I really want to be dressing a Barbie doll (joking, but there's an element of truth there). If I have to walk around looking like Brienne of Tarth I would be unhappy.

A min/maxer is often the same person as a completionist. We do everything as efficient as possible.

It also goes without saying that in a min/max perspective, the extra armor and resistance are worth it -- just because you do not sacrifice any damage to get it. It isn't a tradeoff.

to kill stuff outright in most encounters, then HP, resists, armor rating etc are unimportant.

The point of min/maxing isn't to kill thing fast. Nobody cares about that. The point is to be as efficient as possible within the game, and always becoming more efficient. It's about breaking into the game and flushing out the small things the developers missed. It's about calculating the best stats to use.

Generally, min/maxers tend to come from MMOs or games with Esport compatabilities(LoL/Dota as an example), where min/maxing is given at high-end level of content. When we then get bored, we go to single player games where min/maxing is not requires or intended. We do it not because we need to, but because it is fun to see how we can play the game differently, and discover new synergy and tactics.

If nobody theorycrafted or min/maxed, a lot of things would be unknown. People would use double rings, or double 5+ guard masterwork, or they would use Poisoned Weapons and the upgrade and think it added 25% damage. People would build their tanks for guard only, or anything in that nature.

You can do all above and get through Nightmare without a problem. It is, however, easier to do it the optimal way. Whether you want to do it or not is irrelevant.

Gamers are split. You got Roleplayers, casual gamers, hardcore gamers and meta gamers.

-The first sets themself into the game: Who am I? What do I know? Decisions are based off of what the character know, not what they know.

- The second doesn't care too much. They play for fun. Killing stuff here, talking to stuff here. Some don't care about story, some only care about story.

- The third games a lot. They care about story and mechanics. They play hundred of hours and get a completion. Completionist often finds themself here.

- The last are like me. We start the game as everybody else, but at one point we don't play the game because of its content; We find the optimal playstyle, the best builds, the best combos and simply enjoy testing stuff here and there.
