Hey all.

I was wondering, what the thinking was behind the idea to only allow spirit damage runes to staves? Why are they not able to use the other 3 rune types?

Thnx in advance.

Because each staff already has a base element attributed to it.

So why not be able to use either Spirit, or the rune equalling the base element?

You'd just be reinforcing it, while allowing players to use runes RNGgod has blessed them with, which may be better than their spirit runes (if any).

ie: fire staff can have attached either a spirit or fire rune, but not a cold or electricity rune.

The other obvious solution, is just change the base element to match whatever rune is attached.

Maybe I just want a Fire and Ice, Oh So Nice Staff to complement my Ele and Necro.

I already feel like the Quarian Engineer with both my builds on them, but the Lightning and Spirit on my staff is ruining the feel of it. But all my bases are covered, so... whatever.

From a balance and graphics point of view, it is easier to do it the way they have it. Bows, daggers, and swords are physical damage, and then you give them elemental damage of your choice for the graphics and status effect mechanics like shocking or setting on fire enemies. Staves are elemental damage, and spirit rune is pretty much extra damage while you retain the staff's elemental mechanics.

If they were to allow staves to have elemental runes, retain the original graphics, and remove the status effects of elemental runes in order to balance it with spirit runes, then it would pretty much make all four runes identical.

Allowing staves to use elemental runes such that they are actually different than spirit runes would require weapon balance and graphics to be changed.

On top of that, it just seems unnecessary.  I get runes at a much higher rate than I get weapons worth putting them in.

Not a good enough excuse. We could put whatever type of damage we wanted on our staves and weapons in every other DA until now. I personally preferred it the old way. They also seem to have removed Nature damage and replaced it with Poison.

No rune slots in staves in DAO. If they allow staffs to use all existing runes, they should make sure all of the runes are balanced first and reduce any imbalance that may occur from allowing mages to stack the same elemental type on their weapon for activating status effects faster. Personally I feel that mages are already too strong and shouldn't be given any additional tools like being able to change the elemental type of their weapons, unless they balance it so people won't abuse it by all stacking the same elemental type. The easiest way for them to allow staves to use all runes would be to simply make it purely cosmetic so that it would have the same exact stat bonus as if spirit runes were used, have the elemental/spirit graphics that players want, but there would not be any elemental status effects or enemy resistance differences from spirit rune.

Again, if they want to give staves elemental runes, it should either be purely cosmetic or else actually balanced, because the last thing I want to see is a bunch of mages with the same cookie cutter rune trololol setting things on fire all the time and yelling at people for not slotting fire runes as well.

I demand that you people stop trying to use... logic. Let's go BTW (balls to the..) and bring in spell-crafting, weapon proficiency, and weapon degradation.

Enough with the RPG for kiddies. Let's go full OP and penalty on all classes, mooks that are almost unbeatable without full party synergy, and unlimited horde maps.

You trust bioware to implement weapon degradation?

Maybe a "lore ish" creative decision, from that perspective how would 2 elements that don't get along be projected simultaneously while maintaining their properties/effects separately? Fire and Ice wouldn't just be steam? Whereas Spirit is basically universal.

Could it be changed? Of course it's fantasy, but it's not exactly hard to imagine why it's the way it is.

My personal take is this:

Staff damage is not subject to armor but is subject to resistance. A good chunk of mobs have very strong resistance to one of the elements so there are times you find yourself doing almost no damage. To help balance this out you are afforded spirit damage to compose a certain % of your staff damage. So you're not tossed into a spot where you can literally take an hour to defeat a given encounter.
