I agree with both of you, you expressed it very well. "Hierarchy of snobbery", best description ever ![]()
Actually, I think DA:I raises an interesting point in exploring the supposed relations of kinship between elves. I think it's Sera who says why she should care about other elves just because she has pointed ears. I dislike her attitude towards elves in general, but she has a point. Elves in modern Thedas don't have a common goal or land to unite them, nor even a common enemy to fight. You could say humans are the common enemy to the Dalish and city elves, but their situations and what they have to fight against are so different that they really don't share a cause. Even relationships with humans vary from Dalish clan to Dalish clan; one Dalish clan may want to wipe humans off the face of Thedas while another may wish to coexist peacefully with them (the Lavellan clan, for instance) As far as ancient elves go, if we are to believe Solas and there are pockets of them living somewhere, their enemy is the whole modern world and the Veil for that matter (now that I say it, it doesn't seem so clear that all and any ancient elves would rally behind Solas... remember who put the Veil there in the first place?)
With regards to Abelas, his main and only concern for centuries (maybe for thousands of years) has been protecting the Well. I bet he doesn't give a damn if people who seek the Temple have pointed ears, wear vallaslin or are dwarves that can't dream and live underground. As far as he's concerned, they are all unprepared and undeserving because they lack the long years of training, dedication and study that sentinels have. And like Babelas said, it's likely that many Dalish claimed possession of the Well because "look at me, I have pointed ears and vallaslin and say andaran atish'an SO GIMME"
