The Ancient Elven Lore theme could easily fit into a nice DLC. What if we receive a call for help from Abelas in the shape of a mysterious message and we must track him down? And then, as we investigate, we discover this is connected to violent random attacks by elves in human cities. Maybe the ones located near Denerim, Val Royeaux or some other relevant and heavily populated location.

 

This could involve the Dalish in some way and other ancient elven clans, belonging to other deities (Dirthammen, Elghanan, etc).

 

Maybe one of the Elven Gods did manage to break free from the Beyond and incarnated in an elven priest or the Keeper of a clan, going on a rampage to harm the People by launching them in a crazy crusade against humans.

 

It would be up to the Inquisitor then to help Abelas and the other ancient elves reach the "false prophet" and use their ancient magic to either destroy him or just expel the god from his body.

The Dalish could help in some significant manner and thus create a bond of sorts with their people's remaining ancestors. What if this precipitates the unification of past and present, allowing elder and younger elves to come together and begin the process of unification of the People?

 

 

 

(I know the plot sounds too far-fetched, but it's just an example of how there's a lot that can be derived from a relatively unexplored theme)

Abelas is definitely the little spoon.

I wrote a short drabble about this picture. (:

 

 

It is warm.

A thick blanket of cotton lies over him, the color of dark wine and passionate nights.

But that is not why it is warm.

He sinks into a mattress softer than the haze of dreams, with half a dozen pillows cradling his head as a lover might hold another.

But that is not why it is warm.

Heat radiates behind him, steady and strong. He is enveloped in the softness of skin laid bare against him and over him, both alien and familiar. It is certainty of life that keeps the heat of breath against his back from disappearing as a chill memory. It is comfort that cups his shoulder as he rests, rather than the grasping hands of those long departed. It is trust that curls an arm loose around him, the choice of possession or not created for him to allow.

It is love that allows him to twine is fingers in the hand around his middle and press it against his heart. It is love that allows him smile, reaching behind to hold the hand on his shoulder, connecting all to Her.

It is not Duty who guards his back, who connects him to the future, who holds his heart in Her hands.

Because of Her, he has a choice.

Because of Her, he is warm.

So I started an Abelas/Lavellan fic. This is I guess... the first chapter? I guess?

“Inquisitor, you have a… visitor.” Shiral started at the sound of a voice, her reverie on the balcony interrupted. It was late, far later than she was accustomed to receiving guests. Her first thought was to be disgruntled that her stargazing had been interrupted, though she quickly composed her features into something resembling grace.

            “I can receive whoever it is here. It’s clean… enough.” She cast a doubtful look at the large bedroom, hastily kicking a few garments under the bed. There was nothing to hide in here, and it was better than trying to go downstairs to stoke the fire. Less formal too, than taking a guest in the same hall she used to impose judgments, as if she were some grand lady. Hah! How things changed. Inside, she still felt small, a Dalish girl unused to this big, outside world, but she was a hero now. She just had to reconcile that with how she felt.

            In the lapse between being alerted she had a guest and said guest actually showing up, Shiral allowed herself an indulgent moment. Could it be Solas? Could he have returned? No, everyone in Skyhold knew him. Even this soldier, whose name she really should bother to learn, would have known him, would have shown more excitement that he had returned. It had been too long now. He wasn’t coming back, much as she might miss him and hope it was otherwise.

            The room was dimly lit, only a few candles scattered about. What need did Shiral have of light this time of night? Besides, she had hopes of seeing the aurora, watching those green lights that were so reminiscent of the Fade. It couldn’t really be called a reminder of better times, but of times that held a little more sweetness in them than what existed for her now.

            A flash of gold out of the corner of her eye, distracting, irritating. Shiral turned her head. Ah yes, the mysterious visitor.

            It was as if the fire in her room had expanded a hundred fold, all golden rays. Had Shiral been in a better place, perhaps it would have been annoying. As it was, she found this ostentatious display merely annoying, bordering on distasteful.

            The moment the dazzle in her eyes cleared, Shiral found herself blinking wildly again. “Abelas?” She hadn’t seen him since they had been to the Well, had truly not expected to see him again. The light reflected off his golden armor, off the hood that even now covered his head. She had not thought he had any respect for her kind. What was he doing here, consorting with a degenerate Dalish?

            “Inquisitor. I had hoped to find the other elf that is with you here. Solas.” Of course. Who was she, to the moment that they had shared in a language she could not speak?

            “He’s not here. He’s gone.” Her tone came out more curt than she intended. It was better that than show any hurt in front of this stranger.

            He looked taken aback. For a being so old, he appeared lost.

            “We’ll find space here to put you up for the night. We can talk tomorrow.”

Whoo. I think I'm going to hand write the rest of it to force myself to slow down and actually consider every word. I write really slow- much slower than I type, so it can be frustrating, but I think my writing actually improves under these conditions.

I find your plot interesting. Although I would want that kind of a DLC to be a little bit different than what you described. Here is my version. Solas succeeds in freeing the People. Because they are old gods they are also arrogant and they want that they are treated like gods. They will shake the world and it's balance. There will be wars against humans at least. Maybe with Qunari too. Dalish are confused. Others will worship the old gods and others will abandon them. Of course one DLC might be too short to deal with all these issues but probably it could be some kind of bridge from DAI to DA4 and DA4 would deal with the aftermath of freeing the people. That way it's possible to those who romanced Solas to get him back and also give a teaser what will happen in the future.

 

I believe that Solas inherited those who are bound to Mythal so he might use them to help him if they don't want to do that and because Abelas is bound to Mythal it's possible that he is there freeing the People with him.

Solas vs potential Abelas romance, good discussion going on here.  I'll add my two cents from a roleplay perspective.

Nice material for developing him as a character, but a rocky road for a writer to negotiate as he would likely burn hot and cold, cling too tightly and push his LI away in turns.

That said, I do think his story would be a fascinating way to explore ancient elvhen culture. I would love to see a freed (hot, immortal) slave adjusts not only to the disconnection of his new life but the fact that almost no one in it will live longer than a fraction of his life. Abelas has the potential to be a deep character that carries a lot of narrative weight as well as being an emotional rollercoaster of an LI.

I feel really torn about whether or not my fic-quisitor keeps her vallaslin or not. It's important for my purposes that she's lost her family, so I can't quite figure out whether or not she would cling to that recognition of her past or whether she was taken in by Solas' smooth talking words. I feel like I've done more thinking than actual writing for the past few days, which while not necessarily a bad thing, isn't exactly the most productive either.
