@varricschesthair: Hmm, I generally avoid being explicit in my work.  I guess I'm just too old fashioned to be comfortable writing anything too detailed.  I don't mind reading it if it fits the work, but I find plot, dialog and skilled use of prose are far more important to me.  If you are comfortable writing more mature scenes, go for it.  But don't feel obligated to do it just to include the material unless it adds to your story. 

 

On a side note.  Zev/Abelas ficlet with a scandalous limerick (courtesy of Zev) is about half done.  Poor Abelas

So I have a question... say you are writing a story with Abelas in it and you already know you are going to write a sexual encounter (not of the third kind) do you think it is best to make two different versions? Like one explicit and one mature? How much does having a sex scene detract from the plot or does it? Thoughts, opinions? 

 

I've personally never though of sex scenes as detracting from the plot.  The characters are grown-ups, and if sex is a meaningful part of the relationship, then it has a place in the story.  

 

Besides, it's always important to remember that writing fanfiction is for fun, and it's for YOU.  Basically, you do what you like

Well... I'd post my trash but then I'd get hate mail. The main focus of the story isn't on their relationship. It's all Solas's fault. It's supposed to happen naturally but pfff Abelas is terrible at cooperating. How did you get him to take his shirt off????

Thank you both for the advice! I decided that it doesn't fit the story to write something explicit in it. Makes more sense to be a nice fluffy moment, emphasizing general affection as it advances. Hmmm have to save the smut for a one shot. That's so wrong.

 I've seen them worked into longer stories where there was more going on than just the relationship.  It worked out just fine.  TBH those tend to be a bit better in my eyes - mostly because you're sort of building up the intimacy of the relationship so when they FINALLY get together it's sort of nice.   There is nothing wrong with porn though. I've seen some well done "one shots".  And there is NOT enough Abelas smut - it's mostly the longform relationship ones. Though I think those are more in response to the Solavellan angst, so it's a way to give Lavellan a happier ending with a hot elf.

I think I have found maybe two stories that involve Abelas smut. I might write some. I used to write Fenris/Hawke smut. I agree. I think Abelas is like the rebound elf for many people. I have to say I've gone off Solas since writing Abelas. Don't get me wrong, Solas is a wonderfully written character and is extremely interesting and his romance is beautiful. But I find Abelas much more intriguing. Plus, I think if it wasn't written well whether with Lavellan or a new protagonist, his potential romance could be amazing. For now we are left with fan fiction

I was actually talking about this the other day with someone.  I still enjoy the nice little "slice of life" Solas/Lavellan stuff. Small little, sweet "drabbles" during the Inqusition. The longform ones...nah. The problem, now, for me is the fact that it's not MY lavellan and usually the characterization of Solas is a little off so it's hard for me to get into it.  Also, BW is going to eventually address the relationship at some point so I can be content to sit  on my hands and wait and see in regards to those two. 

 

With Abelas and whatever other shipwreck I'm into at the moment(guh Samson), it's out of canon and people can just have fun and play with it.  So I have more fun reading those because people are really exploring the characters.  Specificially with Abelas, I do agree, I think it is a "rebound" thing for a lot of people...even if it's not done intentionally. That's why it's usually really sweet. The relationship is very healthy. Less breathless and desperate than the Solas one. Which is FINE. It fits with how I view him as a character!   BUT...i would like some porn.  Like seriously.  We have  the one.  I am AMAZED there isn't more. Dude has a slammin' body.

If I wrote porn, I guarantee my parents would somehow find it. SOMEHOW. They don't even use my computer. I am a legal adult. They would find it anyway, and ask me all sorts of uncomfortable questions about who Abelas is, and if I've finally met a boy and have a boyfriend and are we being safe. And then I would have to tell them he's a video game character and they would know how deep in the dumpster I reside. 

 

I enjoy writing little bits and pieces about Abelas, though I confess that I enjoy writing it more than reading it, because I'm trash and it has to be /my/ Inquisitor.

I think there really is only the one LOL. Everyone has read it I suspect. Yes, I'm looking at all of you. Hey, it was good porn. I'm not complaining. I said to someone the other day that I no longer find the Solas relationship healthy. They disagreed with me and I asked how they felt about it after watching the break up scene. It went along the line of used to depressed to I want to see him again because I'm angry. I was like uh huh. That's real healthy. It needs resolution to go past that point of lavellan looking desperate because she couldn't hook up with any one else after the break up. I dare not say this on the Solas thread. They would fire bomb me. But the point you made about people really exploring the character is so true as is the relationships concerning Abelas. Plus, it's original. Sorry but I am tired of reading about Solas's plot just said a million different ways.

 

Abelas also has the benefit of being a character who's characterized enough for us to get a decent impression of him, but still has a lot of room for fanfiction to fill in the blanks.

 

Personally I'm still set on Ser Michel for my Lavellan's rebound if Solas doesn't work out  But I'm withholding judgment on Solas and Lavellan until all's said and done, and in the meantime, it's great fun seeing what fandom does with non-canon relationships like Abelas and Lavellan.

Personally I'm still set on Ser Michel for my Lavellan's rebound if Solas doesn't work out  But I'm withholding judgment on Solas and Lavellan until all's said and done, and in the meantime, it's great fun seeing what fandom does with non-canon relationships like Abelas and Lavellan.

My rebound relationship consists of the Unholy Trinity of Falon'Din/Dirthamen/Andruil. And I love it. 

 

It's all totally healthy.
