The difference between a character like Solas and ones like Cullen and Abelas is that the latter two got so much love with barely any screen time to speak of. It seems to be for the male characters that this happens the most and I'm not entirely sure why, but it is odd. As for what's wrong with it, you can ask the ones who put Cullen in yourself, they didn't even want to, called Cullen a "good haircut", lol, and it was obviously something forced on them for popularity. I'm all for fleshing out characters people think deserve it, but that's not what happened. He was rather dull and little was explained, if anything about why he was even there.

 

I wouldn't want that to happen to Abelas, personally. Guy was cool for the five minutes of screentime he got. But seriously, lets not pretend what goes on with these sort of characters is the same as ones like Solas. Solas gets projected on because people think too much about what they want, and not what the character is. Solas is Solas regardless of what they want to see, and not everyone can handle that.

 

Abelas gets projected on because he has so much missing from him due to the little amount of time on screen he's had. That is truth.

 

Yes, that is mostly correct. That is a completely fair point for both Cullen (back in Origins) and Abelas now. However, I'm not entirely certain what the intent of this statement is supposed to be. I think most of the people who lurk or post in the Abelas thread are aware of that fact, and therefore all the stories and headcanons resulting from projection can be legitimate paths for his character to take. No, nothing is canon and there is hardly any information to back up the characterizations and personality traits for Mr. Golden Thighs. People get it. 

 

However, in a thread like this half the conversation is "ooh, hot elf" and the other half is "ooh, what if Abelas did X or reacted to X?" People in the thread, on Tumblr, and AO3 only have their projections to connect to the bits we learn about him from his short game time. All of those headcanons are different, despite seeing a grumpy (understandably) person. Is Abelas a Solas  Grump 2.0? Could be. Is Abelas a bro who likes reading smut? Could be. Is Abelas like Path-of-Sorrows' interpretation? Could be.

 

It doesn't actually add anything to the conversation here to come in and simply say "You guys kind of suck because you made this character to fit your needs without any knowledge to back it up." Great. Point for Addai,  but nothing else was offered to contribute in any manner that would result in critical thinking, or a differing perspective on Abelas' character. Why didn't she add her own projection about him? You clearly have standards in regards to inputting your own opinion regarding subjects you don't have a lot of knowledge about. That's fine, but it's a little abrasive when you spent your first post saying "you guys are bitches," rather than getting to the point like in the post I quoted. 

 

It's not really fair to compare Solas and Abelas to begin with. They're both ancient elves. They both get kinda grumpy for reasons. They're both physically attractive models. Solas, however, is the Inquisitor's companion and the one we learn most about. We get to see his personality, at least, which makes actual discussion and accurate fanfiction possible. If Bioware released more codex entries, or a couple of short stories regarding Abelas' backstory or his personality when he's not defending his home from invaders, then it would be more accurate to compare the two characters and reduce the amount of self-projection which happens with these kinds of minor characters.

That image was tiny, my bad. It seems like he can tie it back with the ropes or bungee cords in the first illustration. That's sort of convenient for traveling purposes I would assume. So you're thinking he's wearing a metal thong? Not a codpiece?

I wonder if they sleep in this armor, or if they rush to put it on when their temple is getting invaded. I imagine it would be super uncomfortable sleeping in a metal thong for years on end. Think about the chafing.

I'm going to hope that, when you're in uthenera, you're essentially in the most complete sleep paralysis ever and you can't move at all.  The chafing would be enough to drive you to give up your position at the temple just to get out of that thing!

What is happening with this thread now is not what I would want for Abelas. Are people that bored on the other threads? I mean for a guy who I am told doesn't have a story and has to be purely fantasized about to actually have any depth, he sure is popular tonight.

Wow. I responded to a post that was mostly about Solas, and what I said was mostly about Solas. The only comparison I made to Abelas was that he has the ancient elf mystique just as Solas does and to claim otherwise is disingenuous, and added that I don't know how people create elaborate headcanons for him anyway. The latter opinion which numerous people have said is unremarkable has set off pages and pages of drama- you'd have to explain to me why that is, because I don't get it. Apparently varric didn't like how I phrased my post. Okay, fair enough.

Okay. I hope, if he comes back, he's badass and adds to our knowledge of elven lore. If he comes back as the elven Cullen... well, if I commented on that the eyeroll GIFs would start again. Apparently this means that I hate the character or something. You can see on page one two of this thread that I like Abelas and thought he was sexy. I don't like the cuddly depictions of him, that's true. Mea culpa.

Lordy - ok - not going to wade into most of the argument - but here's my 2 cents on what i highlighted

 

I don't think it's any different than someone sitting down in front of a blank word document and writing a story with their own OC except now BW gave people an outline.  It could all be wrong, but in the meantime people learned how to be more confident with their writing, had fun, etc. It also helps show the developers that people are interested in the character.  Yes, there is the risk of running into another Cullen but that's the risk with any minor character.  Even poorly written major ones (ahem Leliana).  

 

Do I hope he has more "teeth" than what's been depicted. Yes. But I can enjoy mostly made-up fluff as much the next person where he is doting and sweet.  I like romance(like sickly sweet kind)..SUE ME.  You don't. Which is understandable and totally fair.   

 

So yeah..these are my thoughts.

Do you want the thread to acknowledge the necessity of headcanon for a character on screen for five minutes? I think we'd all agree to that pretty readily. Just like how people on the Solas thread can admit that they have absolutely no certainty as to what his plans are next. Other than... The dude headed west and he needed Mythal's power. For... something?

Or is this about measuring one pixel husband to the other and saying who is better? Cause ultimately that just comes down to opinion. There's no real argument to be made. No one can "win" that. It's personal preference. Just like what people are attracted to. I happen to be nordic-god-sexual. You may be into delicately boned brunettes. Someone else into chubby gingers.

We don't need to agree for our opinions to be valid or "right" for us individually. If you don't like someone's headcanon... congratulations. You don't have to share it. Because that's what it is. Headcanon. Theirs. Personal. Not the one and only true canon. Just as there is no one and only love interest.

So yeah, I think a lot of the confusion/ ire you're earning on the thread came from your tone, dismissal of anyone shipping him with anyone, and thereby creative interpretation of a character who has tons of room to grow. Who neither you nor any of the creatives here can claim sole knowledge or "canon" understanding of.

If you're not into fringe ships, cool. But shutting down people's desire to do a thing because "you don't get it?" Not cool. I'm not into Solas wolf transforming. I don't "get it." I don't see any "canon" proof of it in game as he has no access to a shapeshifting tree like Morrigan and people frequently take animal monikers - see Batman. Robin. Wolverine. Or the fox thief in Skyrim. But people believe that he does. Hell, some one somewhere wrote fanfiction about him having a wolf penis and wanting to give Lavellan a litter. Whoop di doo. I may think it's weird as all get out, but muh. To each their own. If they want to masturbate to that, all power to em.

Maybe a more constructive discussion would have been, "Hey I'm not understanding this. Would you mind explaining your reasoning to me?" Or raised some questions about his personality or character that you saw versus what other's saw. Hence me telling you I could wait for you to continue. Nothing can be done with opinion. That's like arguing politics and party lines. People have already made their decisions and it's just a circle jerk to feel vindicated via the opposite side's reaction. But asking questions, providing insight or reference, etc. can go somewhere.

On the other hand, it's the internet and you can be as abrasive as you want. Just as we can't be made to think alike no one can make you respond, or start conversations in the way they prefer. And vice versa.

So have at the Solas. Make the sweetest of love to him mentally, emotionally, fanfictionally, fanartily, one-handedly, pixelatedly as often in whatever way you want. It's your prerogative. You're entitled to the freedom to touch yourself to the most canon or least canon Solas of your imagining. Just as I or anyone else here can do with ANY of the characters in the DA universe. The only dangerzone we can enter into is the assertion of one headcanon over another (again, opinion) or insisting the headcanon is canon (delusion). I don't think anyone here was arguing that.

It's rude to do so with no criticism, just say "This sucks", or too harshly. "Look at your ****** lines! No symmetry! You blow!" That, would have been rude.

I objected to varrics' characterization of Solas' appeal, he/she disagreed with me, and that was about all there was to it except for the pages of drama that ensued. You can do whatever you like, like whatever you like, and express it however you like. I don't have to care. And I really, really don't.

If you need more or different angles just let me know. Because the thing with Ameridan is shot during a video sequence the screenshots come out soft focus. I suspect there is a way to turn that off. I did not reduce the size because I was worried about proportions becoming skewed. Since Bioware promotes fan art I hope they don't get annoyed with this. Plus, I can think of a few people on here who won't mind seeing him up close and personal. Sorry!

Damn that's beautiful. Your color choice is awe inspiring and I am so very glad elves are your weakness Ameridan really is a beautiful elf inside and out. He is the kind of companion I'd love to have in the next DA. I have some more screenies for you.
