I found Abelas a lot friendlier than I had expected actually. Given what we knew about the ancient elves going in, I was worried he could have potentially be the terrifying love child of Javik and Velanna.

He does seem to notably appreciate if you stop and do all the rituals. I think he's just in an awkward place in his life, you know [understatement of the year.]

More seriously, I believe he's torn between acknowledging that someone he considers a shem could show the proper respect and conduct the rituals, and wanting to look down upon them entirely.

This involves some headcanoning and reading between the lines on my part, but I think he's also aware that without the Inquisition's intervention, Corypheus and his forces will take the temple and desecrate the Well.  At least by siding with this strange shem, he has a chance (however slim) to fulfill his duty.  After all, he and the sentinels had quizzy surrounded.  He doesn't know how badass quizzy is, and could very well have opened fire when they had a chance to kill quizzy.  Instead, he chose to talk.

I gotta ask this. Why is it looking down on someone if they come into your home following a group of people who just blew a hole in your home and invaded? Wouldn't you be a bit like what the hell??? You would in fact be very suspicious and a bit pissed off. To Abelas's credit he does find the one thing the Inquisitor did right and comment on it. But I think his reaction makes perfect sense. He doesn't know the Inquisitor, hell he probably doesn't even know the date. It's just another intruder in a long line of intruders.

Thing is... the use of the word Shemlen isn't an insult, it's a type of person. The Dalish used it as an insult not the ancient elves. It amused me it was thrown back in their faces. It's also amusing that it doesn't matter that they have pointy ears because to Abelas frolicking in the forest and calling yourself the last of the real elves is total bs. I'd be indignant to if I spent my immortality guarding a thing that had real importance to my people and then have someone come in saying hey bro. You get no knuckle bumps for being a half-ass elf.

I think that Abelas was just cautioning the Inquisitor. He knew the power in the well but he had no idea what it was going to do to a mortal. It didn't come with a warning label other than Abelas and he tells you it's not going to be good for you because you'll be bound to it.

Actually I think David Gaider said that it was the city elves that use the full word Shemlen as an insult, and for the Dalish "Shem" is the slur.

I'm sorry I'm behind on reading. I need to catch up with your story. I have been slacking due to nice weather and my own uncooperative Abelas and overbearing Zevran. Oh well, muses are a pain.

Interesting and somehow that's even better. So the elves who know even less about their past are using the word as an insult. It's kind of funny but also depressing. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Dalish and the city elf Origin was one of my favorite to play in DA:O, although I still laugh every single time Vaughn Kendall and his men do that maniacal laughter. I don't know if that was supposed to be deliberately over the top or not. We are evil men therefore we must laugh evilly too! Muwahahaha.

There's no rush or obligation. <3 I know it's rather long, but I do like people to know I'm still producing content for our hunky thigh master.

I believe that Abelas has known for a while that he is not going to success in protecting the well. When Inquisitor completes the rituals he is most likely surprised because Inquisitor is outsider and yet she/he was able and willing and knew how to complete the rituals. Because of that he might see that Inquisitor is  a worthy ally who can give him a little more time to protect the well. Maybe he is waiting that Mythal will come back some day or that ancient elves once again rule the world and until then he tries protect their heritage.

I'm not sure why he lets Inquisitor to drink from the well even if she/he completed the rituals. Maybe he is so devastated of his failure so he lets people to convince him that  it's better to give inquisitor a change to save the world instead of letting Corypheus to destoy it.

I always wondered whether he'd encountered Qunari before, since he seems to take Adaar pretty in stride?

Although I suppose that if you're immortal and capable of uthenera, after the first couple of hundred year long catnaps, any potential future shock you might suffer starts to lessen and you just get used to the fact that when you wake up, you'll probably see a lot of weird stuff going on?

Frankly, I think waking up with your home on fire and watching a 10 foot tall blighted monster be reborn through a dead warden would drastically change my "weird-o-meter". A rather polite horned Qunari might actually be a nice change.

Maybe there had been tal'vashoth mercenaries hired for previous expeditions to the Arbour Wilds as guards.

Adaar and Abelas, bromance roadtrip.  I need this in my life now.

Abelas: What is it this time? Pesky Shemlen, pretender Elvhen, greedy Durgen'len, horned giants or those blighted Darkspawn creatures?

Sentinel: Erm... all of the above?

Abelas: Excuse me?

Sentinel: Our scouts report a giant Darkspawn mage is leading a collection of Tevinters, Templar monstrosities and Grey Wardens in attacking the Sanctuary, while another army of Shemlen, Dwarves and Elves are being led by a Qunari and appear to be trying to stop them?

Abelas: Well... that's new?

This would be an amazing buddy picture... especially the scene where Abelas discovers that Adaar is using the Well of Sorrows as a hot tub.

My Adaar would totally do that too.  He's such a bro.  I mean, it's fine as long as you don't drink the stuff, right?  All that latent magical energy makes for a fantastic hot tub, even if the bubbles are haunted

Don't make me do my thing.... I compared them once side-by-side. They do not look alike!!!!!!!!!!!!

He seems to know about the Dalish and I don't think it is because he has been encountering them. Keep in mind Inky had help via Morrigan for an explanation on how to get into the temple. I mean, I suppose the Dalish could have ventured down there and they all had a nice chat that culminated in their death at the end. Can't see Abelas letting them go to go back and tell the whole clan. But when Abelas talks about the Dalish, it's like he has seen it firsthand. Perhaps through the Fade?

I so wish I was Flemeth... the power she had at her hand carrying Mythal around. That could be used when ummm visiting your faithful sentinels. All kinds of wrong.

I just got my hands on World of Thedas. Apparently there's some Abelas content in here- when I get to it, would people like me to type it up? I don't have a scanner, so I unfortunately can't upload images unless you can content yourselves with some cell phone pictures.

This should be on the front page of this thread: http://abelas-fanclub.deviantart.com/

I read the bit about Abelas in World of Thedas Volume II. It basically says he and his fellow sentinels are delusional and that there is no way he is over 1,000 years old and that his armor could not have survived as long as he is supposedly old. Sounds like the Chantry wrote this volume of Thedas. I don't know who the author is supposed to be. Didn't look that far in. Might buy it. Is it worth it?

Yes.  I think that was sort of the point - it's supposed to be untrustworthy - muhc like the codex entries.  They(Bioware) likely did this to avoid spoilers or sort of back themselves into a corner with lore.  Regardless, it's a well presented book and really interesting.

Did you guys get impression that Abelas maybe knows who Solas is. not only is Solas the only one who The Sentinels acknowledge as "one of their own" but the first time I heard Abelas say "Elvhen such as you" I sort of got the vague sense there was something he might have been subtly referring to that I wasn't aware of or that he knew more than he was saying.

He definitely recognized Solas as an ancient elf like him.  He refers to Solas as elvhen, but calls a Dalish inquisitor "shem."  Whether he recognized Solas as the Dread Wolf is up to headcanon.  Personally, I think he did recognize Solas, and chose not to say anything about it.  He recognizes the Anchor's magic in quizzy as "familiar," and it wouldn't be a huge leap if he also recognized the person who is the original source of that magic.

I guess I will be forced to buy it then :) I really only read the couple of paragraphs concerning Abelas and nothing else so I had no idea why it was written that way. Your explanation makes sense. I was hoping it wasn't supposed to be from canon Inky's pov.

As for Abelas knowing Solas, I'd say he either recognized him and was secretly laughing at his baldness, because we all know Abelas has a braid under that hood ;) or he felt it. I get the feeling these elves feel deeper than regular shem elves.

+1 for Abelas as companion and LI for the next DA game <3 XD

Damn he gave my Lavellan lotsa pains with his cutting words, the time he called her 'shem' crushed her heart more than treading the Exalted Plains + Emerald Graves and looking over remnants of the empire her people once had. But she stayed respectful and in the end, felt very very sorry at the Ancient Elf. He was just soooo utterly sad and truly hope that he would find some semblance of peace or happiness somewhere (like in DA4 perhaps XD, not abandoning the hope we'll see him again next time XD) bonus points if he could become LI for the next protag XD (dreaaammmm awayyy..) XD
