Damn he gave my Lavellan lotsa pains with his cutting words, the time he called her 'shem' crushed her heart more than treading the Exalted Plains + Emerald Graves and looking over remnants of the empire her people once had. But she stayed respectful and in the end, felt very very sorry at the Ancient Elf.
OK, when does he call you "shem?" I got his initial "You are not my People grump grump grump" thing, but I don't think he ever actually addressed my Lavellan as "shem." Is it only if you take a particular dialogue option?
I'd start up the petition again but don't you usually get people trolling on those?

I know SableR knows this but I'm throwing it back up here for clarification.
I know he says Shemlen once you reach the well and if you take an aggro tone with him. I don't think he ever shortens it to Shem because that would be inaccurate and Abelas seems very particular about how he uses his words. But, again, if anyone else but an ancient had said it, yes it would be an insult. An elven Inquisitor is mortal. Once that immortality is gone the person becomes a Shemlen. People get the City elf and Dalish insult mixed up with the actual meaning of the word. It means quick children and was once applied to humans by immortal elves. He makes the distinction because it's a truth, in my opinion, not as an insult. Half-ass pointy ears don't equal bro fist for Abe.
He's grumpy!
I found an article written by someone saying how insulted they would be if they went back in time and their ancestors acted like Abelas. The thing is there is something that niggles at me a bit. Why is he saying another elf is not his people? We don't actually know his reasoning. Maybe there were two types of elves? Maybe he is just pissy because you woke him up? I suppose really maybe he is looking at his people like family. So if someone came and knocked on my door and said I'm part of your family, I'd be a bit like whaaaaaaaaa? I think also he is devastated that the current population of elves only reach his chest in height
Think my Lavellan might be at belly button height. Not sure. The constant looking down is just annoying.
Yes, I always take up for him. I can't help it. I watch that last part when he is standing at the well and he just seems so damn vulnerable. It's pitiful. Then a face full of thighs and I'm like insult me all you want big boy. Sad just sad.

Could be he's using "Shemlen" to simply mean "Young'un"... like the badass grumpy grandpa that he is?

That's how I see him. But people keep focusing on that one word. Well!!! You go around being all potty mouth it comes back to bite you!

Hottest grandpa elf this side of Thedas.
And now I am convinced this guy has Abelas's face minus vallaslin:

I can't decide. I need better pictures of Gatt. That time of the month again when I want to romance the unromanceable ones. Ah well screen shot time.

I haven't yet reached the Temple of Mythal with my Dalish Mage, but I would assume if he calls an elf a Shemlen, it would be because of your lifespan. It translates to "Quick Ones" or "Quick Children." It may have been coined to refer to humans and now elves have the same lifespan as humans do.

But to my Lavellan whose pretty much has her ears still ringing from previous battles it was kinda hard to process at the moment.
Her first meeting with him was already a shock to her.. (wait, what? You're an Ancient Elf? Like.. so ancient before the fall of Arlathan? Like what? Is this even real or are you trying to mess with my mind?)
Too many questions just burst through her mind with no or too little answer.
So when he called her 'shemlen' (by the well) her first thought was "you lumping me altogether with 'humans'?" O.o'
'Tis a sad and confusing moment for her.
It was confusing that many of what she learned from the keeper seemed to contradict what ever that came out of Abelas's mouth. It was sad because she wanted at least some semblance of 'fist bump' for just having pointy ears
Eventually when he did offer her the well... when my Lavellan said, "With your permission, Abelas."
Abelas, "It has nothing to do with permission. One simply possesses the right to do so." (Paraphrasing here. Sorry for the inaccuracy)
My wee elf (compared to the towering Ancient ^^') felt honored.
When he walks away.. the fangirl inside me screams "Hoping to see you again in DA4, Abelas!"
Ps: sorry for too much rambling XD

Later on I (as a game player) did get to understand why he called my dalish 'shemlen'.. because her life span has 'quickened' and him and his brethren are basically deathless.
But to my Lavellan whose pretty much has her ears still ringing from previous battles it was kinda hard to process at the moment.

and it was for a good reason too. You don't get respect from being born into what you are, you gain respect by earning it.

I completely understand. I have to say the first time I played I didn't catch the Shemlen remark. When I did on my next pt, I thought Abelas you big annoying lug. My Lavellan wanted to ask him questions. But I guess they had to make Abelas standoffish to a degree otherwise there would have been so many questions and there would be no plot left!
You don't get respect from being born into what you are, you gain respect by earning it.
Very well said. It's also how I see the city elves who go to the Dalish. You would expect them to have a certain amount of respect for the Dalish if they are trying to convert to their ways. But with Abelas... it's everything the Dalish wanted to remember and everything they got wrong
My Lavellan would have followed him around like a little puppy observing everything he does, like hero worship.
I remember he also tells Lavellan there is a righteousness in you I cannot deny. That gave me a good glimpse into his character. For him to say that to an outsider is a big deal that is very much overlooked in my strange opinion. Mythal was the goddess of justice and motherhood. Righteousness, being an outraged sense of justice (as I understand it to be). For Abelas to say to another they are righteous is a huge compliment. I think in the beginning he is on the defensive and by the end, he senses something good in the Inquisitor and I suspect Mythal put the will in him to give it up at that point. She was waiting for the right person. It's also why I think ancient elves can perceive much more than they say.

See, I chalked it up to the Well. Flemythal is still alive when quizzy goes to her temple, and Abelas is presumably bound to both her and the Well of Sorrows. "Bound, as we are bound," he says to the quizzy who drinks of the Well. And the two options for drinking of the Well are Morrigan, her daughter, and the Inquisitor, one of a long line of heroes whom she helps for one reason or another. She may have told Abelas directly, "Hey, this person is cool" if quizzy didn't present him/herself as a threat to the sentinels or the Well.

It's definitely a very plausible explanation. I hadn't considered Abelas and Flemythal are chatting telepathically? But perhaps Abelas hints that he knows Mythal isn't quite dead when he says something about if a god can truly be killed.
You know, Abelas being bound to Flemythal has real kinky potential. I won't go there.
Hmm I wonder if he knows there is this really hot naked elf woman at the bottom of it or something?
But the number 1 thing I want to know about Abelas, Flemeth and Morrigan is... are they related? They all have the golden eyes.

I figured Abelas having golden eyes like Morrigan was just foreshadowing Flemeth being Mythal.

Perhaps... though I'd be disappointed if there wasn't some connection other than foreshadowing. I did have this horrible thought that Abelas might be Morrigan's father. Who else would touch Flemeth except for a loyal sentinel bound to her? Who else would she find acceptable? Does it ever say in the books who Morrigan's and her sister's father is? Going to go have a drink to deal with this awful thought.

I don't think it ever says in any source material. Some people have speculated that Maric is Morrigan's father, but the timeline doesn't add up.

Yvana has the golden eyes too. I just looked it up. So out of all of Thedas 4 elves have these eyes o.O Damn it Abelas. But even worse... Morrigan may have killed her own father. See that reeks of Bioware evil.

Okay now I'm kind of freaking out. The other sentinels don't have the golden eyes.
Someone hold me and make it go away. I mean I really like Flemeth but please tell me she didn't do the nasty with Abe. Fangirl tears!! Though that would be an interesting story if he was forced to procreate with Flemeth because he is bound to her not because he wanted to. Tell me Bioware isn't that evil.

I'd rather take the: "Abelas got golden eyes because it looks good and bada** on him" (y'know, artistic license and all) instead of: "Abelas + Mythal = Flemeth's daughters" (Eeeewwwww XP don't want)

She could have, I suppose, but Flemeth would have been going kind of far out of her way just so the person she'd be impregnated by was one of Mythal's servants. It's also worth noting that Abelas seems to have been trying to do something Flemeth probably wouldn't have wanted if he was attempting to destroy the Well before anyone could drink from it, so I get the sense she doesn't communicate with the much.

We also don't know how she communicates through the Well. We've only heard the weird whispers (which can be chalked up to all the other souls swirling about in the Well), and seen her exert direct control over quizzy/Morrigan in the Fade. Maybe she knows that Abelas and co. wouldn't take it well, realizing that Mythal is kicking about in a human mage's body?

But would Abelas and co judge the decision of their goddess? Wouldn't that be blasphemy?
There are a few things that keep rolling around in my brain. Yavana, golden eyes, long lived, plays with dragons, powerful mage, shapeshifter. Morrigan I assume will have that long life span as well, golden eyes, can turn into a dragon if she gets the knowledge from the well and she is a powerful mage. Flemythal... well y'all should know all about her! Abelas, mage, golden eyes, well wisher (sorry couldn't resist) and I highly suspect he can turn into a dragon. I think the only reason he didn't in the temple was because it was an enclosed space with no maneuvering room to fight. Plus, he could damage the well if he wasn't careful. Whose careful in a fight? So... my brain keeps saying if Flemeth procreated with Abelas then Mythal would find that acceptable because he is an elf, a mage, loyal and a ummm known supply of errr biological ingredients. He is also carrying around ancient DNA, thus preserving, which seems to be a big theme, ancient magic and ancient elfyness. On the other hand, perhaps Abelas has been blessed by Mythal and has the eyes because he was one of her chosen who was allowed to turn into a dragon. I went with the latter for my story. But I can't stop wondering about this...

I dunno, but I have a nasty feeling that Mythal as he remembers her, and Flemythal as she is in the Dragon Age, are two rather different people. His Well codex entry talks about how the younger acolytes don't understand what it was like when Mythal was in her full glory, before her murder. Sharing a body with Flemeth probably hasn't made Mythal any nicer in the intervening centuries.

I still think he is a good candidate for it. I should put up a picture of Abelas and Morrigan side-by-side. I, however, think Abelas would have done this out of a sense of duty not errrr desire. Hopefully it occurred while in dragon form LOL, if he can turn into one. Still a big if.

I have been thinking that Abelas is single but it's also possible he has a family in the temple or that he has had a family and couple of children. Although I think that is unlikely but still possible.

This is what was mined from the game files:
<CharacterName> Abelas
<CharacterDescription> An ancient elf. A man of strong conviction, Abelas speaks with authority - he has an impressive presence to him. Has a large accumulation of wisdom, but no interest in sharing it with those outside his cause. Abelas was charged centuries ago with guardimg a temple site sacred to his people, and leads the soldiers protecting it.
<Appearance> A warrior - wearing sentinel armor - in his 30s. Stern, unyielding.
I believe if he had a family they are dead or maybe someone in his position didn't have that kind of commitment because of the responsibility. In one of the ancient text references he speaks about children within the temple but he never mentions his own family. All thighs aside, I really hope he is in the next game. It would very interesting to see what would happen if his conviction was challenged. Plus, there is something tragic about him. I guess being locked away all that time. He needs a new name.
