Someone said 3. So that means if I'm 15, and I fight the Hinterlands Dragon, I get zero XP when I whack it?
So, how many level difference before you don't get XP?

I was level 20 once, and I got 1k xp from the Ferelden Frostback.
/shrug
Also, the loot from the Ferelden Frostback is level 15. The dragon itself should've been level 15.

Dragons (or other boss enemies) don't count. The "+3 levels for no experience" applies only to normal and I think either elite enemies, not on bosses or special ones.

Wow, I didn't know we didn't get xp if we fight something more than three levels below us (actually, is it 3 or more levels, or is it more than 3 levels? If I'm level 10, do I get xp for killing something level 7?).
I'm glad this is in the game, or it would be too easy to overlevel yourself when you finish things up in earlier areas.

It's simple really. If whatever you fight - excluding dragons - has a gray icon, it won't give you experience - they still drop same loot they would if they were of higher level.
Grey - too low level - no xp
White - your level
Orange - higher level, difficult fight
Red - You will not pull this off no matter how skilled you are (bugs abusing / cheating with a ranged character shooting for 20 minutes with normal attacks not taken into consideration, if you enjoy sitting in a specific spot pressing attack button for that much time to get stuff you can't even use for several hours of gameplay then by all means). First sight of such Red con mobs will be in hinterlands, farms Rift.

Thanks for the tips; I will try to pay attention to the icon.

This is pretty misleading, first time playing I wandered around the Hinterlands right away and was fighting Reds and winning, on hard, without abusing terrain. Level 4 party vs level 8 enemies. Red hurts but that's by no means impossible.
Not trying to be rude, but it's worth noting, since you can get over-leveled gear and have it waiting.

There are two Rifts in HInterlands that have level 12 Desire Demons and Rage Demons. With level 4 you will never win with them. Red simply means a much higher level encounter than you; you can still win with 3-4 levels of difference (depending on type of enemies; anything with barrier and/or guard becomes almost impossible on nightmare) but anymore is suicide.
