Banter, debates, discussions. What are your favorite ones that take place in fiction between two characters in a book, movie, game, comic, manga, anime or any piece of fiction?

Please remember to warn people of spoilers if the conversations involve anything important to the plots they talk about.

I'll start with a few of my personal favorites:

A Game of Thrones: Tyrion and Varys, discussion on what power is (my alltime personal favorite)

(video contains minor S2 spoilers)

"Power resides where men believe it resides. It's a trick. A shadow on the wall..."

This conversation pretty much describes the entire series perfectly for me. Every single scene of this show can come back to power and asking yourself what power truly is, as well as seeing the effect it has on other peoples lives. Is power worth having when all the power in the world can't help you from saving those you love? What is power mean when even kings can be killed just as easily as any other man or woman? Our thoughts alone can give something power, but in the end what is power really?

Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm: Kerrigan and Abathur, on evolution

"Perfection goal the never changes. Never stops moving. Can chase, cannot catch"

Abathur was one of the more interesting characters in the series, but this was my favorite moment between his and Kerrigans conversations. Part of the reason why I like it so much is that it really is quite true when it comes to evolution. People like to see evolution as a ladder, but evolutions doesn't limit itself to "more evolved" or "less evolved" and it's very likely that perfection is something we can't possibly reach in a sense, since we can only strive to be perfect under certain specific circumstances. What can be better can be rather situational whether it be strength, speed, height, intelligence, wisdom or so on. Sometimes striving for something can be more powerful then actually achieving it (if that makes any sense)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Sayaka and Kyouko, on the duality between hope and despair

(video contains series spoilers)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxQR1tXDYkM

"The balance between hope and despair- It keeps itself at zero. When was it you told me that? I understand what you mean now. I did save quite a few people, but in exchange, hatred and jealousy filled my heart"

This one requires a bit of context and understanding of the situation the girls are in. Hope and despair are two sides of the same coin. One cannot exist without the other. Those who rely blindly on hope alone are naive and open themselves to despair, which is a painful lesson growing up. Life is not a fairytale and things rarely just work out for the best, and yet without the ability to despair our hope would be meaningless. Life is filled with both of these things constantly going back and forth like a pendulum right until the end.

Schindler's List: Ending scene with Schindler and Stern, I could have done more

(Contains spoilers)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0T1od5dUoA

"I could have gotten more out..."

This scene can still bring me to tears even to this day. As good of a movie as it is, the acting and everything is absolutely breathtaking on this part. For all the good that Schindler accomplished, it was here surrounded by the faces of the peoples who lives he had saved that he truly comes to feel regret. Similarly to evolution, I think being a good person is something you must strive for, and often the more good you do, the more it feels like it's not enough, the more you look back and realize you could have done so much more. You could save a million lives, and yet it will be the lives you were not able to save that will keep you awake at night (Mass Effect 3 anyone?)

Anyways I could go all night with this if I really wanted to. Anyone else have some that speak to them that they wanted to share?

should go and can't think much, so from the tip of my mind:

Glados and Whitley (Portal 2)

Mephistopheles  (End of NWN1:HotU)

Shepard and Sovereign (ME1)

The Exile and Jedi Masters (separately, KOTOR II)

Dessan and Kyle Katarn (Jedi Knight II)

Final confrontation with Li (Jade Empire)

Whole TIM conversations (ME2)

Shepard and Sovereign is another one I absolutely adore. Amazing VA. That was the moment that the story in ME really started to grip me (partially because of my love for the Love Craftian unknowable horrors which Sovereign and the reapers reminded me of at the time)

"what is this? Some kind of VI interface?"

"Rudimentary creatures of blood, and flesh, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding."

"I don't think this is a VI..."

One of my favorites in the entire ME series, 2nd only to Mordins final talk with Shepard in Mass Effect 3 before he goes up into the tower on Tuchanka.

(The "I made a mistake!" one)

The first two in video games that come to mind are Geralt and Letho's conversation at the end of The Witcher 2 and Shepard and Sovereign's in Mass Effect.

My personal favorite is probably the conversation between John Crichton, Moya's crew (and Scorpius), Commandant Grayza and Emperor Staleek during the Wormhole Weapon scene at the end of Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars. That entire scene still blows me away.

Book: Game of Thrones - Tyrion/Anyone Else. Because Tyrion, that's why.
Comic: FiM FF#3 - Celestia/Spike. It was nice to have Celestia portrayed more as a wise mentor than Superman with Hooves/Exposition spiller, and both of them grew from the experience...even if what they were fighting was more of a facepalm than anything else.
Spoiler

Manga: None; Outside of a certain manga Grav had popularized, I've never read any.
Anime: NGE - Shinji & Asuka, since their banter makes for either great comedic relief or very serious conflict.

----------------------------

Video Games:
Dragon Age: Inquisiton - Vivienne & Sera, Classy Meets Trashy. Cassandra and Varric.
Mass Effect 2 - Morinth and Me. One of the few conversations in the ME series that felt challenging and satisfying.
Planescape: Torment - Annah and Fall-From-Grace, essentially for the same reasons Vivi & Sera are on here.
Arcanum - Me & Mr. Witless
Knights of the Old Republic 2: Kreia & Atton. Leave it to the Master.

Television:
Dexter - Deb and Dexter, which feels similar to the relationship between myself and my sis. Though my sister swears much less.

Ugh had to re-make the post.. just one that came to mind hard to say what all time favorite is overall...FF6

Edgar: So, you're an Imperial soldier! No problem. Figaro and the empire are allies! Please relax while you are here, it's not in my blood to harm a lady.

Terra: Look, why are you helping me? Is it because of my... abilities?

Edgar: I'll give you three reasons. First, your beauty has captivated me! Second, I'm dying to know if I'm your type... I guess your... abilities... would be a distant third.....

Terra: ....? What's with you anyway?

Edgar: Guess my technique is getting a bit rusty....

FFT

Delita: You and I are the same. Miserable people forced to live false lives. Always being used by someone. Try hard and you'll be rewarded, they say.. Lies. Only those close to the top are rewarded without tring. It's the way of the world. Most people have to act the roles given to them. Then again, most of them haven't noticed they're even acting. No way I'd do that. I won't be used. I'll be the one using!

Ovelia: What will you do?

Delita: Trust me Ovelia. I'll make a country worthy of you. I'll make your life shine! Let me guide you! Don't cry like that.

Ovelia: Should I trust you?

Delita: I won't betray you. I swear by my dead sister, Teta.

The Great Divorce - C S Lewis

"
'God' said the Ghost, glancing around the landscape.

'God what?' asked the Spirit.
'What do you mean, "God what"?' asked the Ghost.
'In our grammar God is a noun' said the Spirit.

Off the top of my head, I remember the conversation between Cappa and Pinbacker from Sunshine, that scene was pretty epic though I cant seem to find it on youtube.

Pinbacker: Are you an angel? Has the time come? I've been waiting so long.
For seven years I spoke with God. He told me to take us all to Heaven.

At the end of time, a moment will come when just one man remains. Then the moment will pass. Man will be gone. There will be nothing to show that we were ever here... but stardust.
The last man, alone with God. Am I that man?

Cappa: My God... my God. Pinbacker!

Pinbacker: Not your God. MINE!

Yes! The Farscape wormhole scene :D another fantastic one.

@Dom

Morinth and Shepard was actually one of the best interactions in that entire series when you think about it. One of the few that was genuinely challenging, and as you said satisfying. Good choices BTW!

I'm asking about specific scenes and conversations. Just saying character names isn't much to go on. Can you expand on which conversations and dialogue those characters had that you particularly liked? (An explanation as to why would also be nice for context if possible)

Lots in Dresden Files, most recent the one with Uriel about what Star Wars means as a tale. He gets it much better than most former EU writers ever did.

Not conversations, but Vimes´s thought in Discworld books are usually good. My favorite is his refusal to say a post-mortem one-liner after tricking a villain into killing himself.

Videogames, Adam Jensen winning the social boss fights by cunning alone (excepting Tong, the CASIE upgrade uncovers him in their first meeting).

Those impossible words!

Note: ignore the subtitle to listen to the real thing, or read it if you want a little humour in between.

The two stand in the fast-thinning throng of victims, but they speak as if they were alone. Eye to eye, voice to voice, hand to hand, heart to heart, these two children of the Universal Mother, else so wide apart and differing, have come together on the dark highway, to repair home together, and to rest in her bosom.

"Brave and generous friend, will you let me ask you one last question? I am very ignorant, and it troubles me--just a little."

"Tell me what it is."

"I have a cousin, an only relative and an orphan, like myself, whom I love very dearly. She is five years younger than I, and she lives in a farmer's house in the south country. Poverty parted us, and she knows nothing of my fate--for I cannot write--and if I could, how should I tell her! It is better as it is."

"Yes, yes: better as it is."

"What I have been thinking as we came along, and what I am still thinking now, as I look into your kind strong face which gives me so much support, is this:--If the Republic really does good to the poor, and they come to be less hungry, and in all ways to suffer less, she may live a long time: she may even live to be old."

"What then, my gentle sister?"

"Do you think:" the uncomplaining eyes in which there is so much endurance, fill with tears, and the lips part a little more and tremble: "that it will seem long to me, while I wait for her in the better land where I trust both you and I will be mercifully sheltered?"

"It cannot be, my child; there is no Time there, and no trouble there."

"You comfort me so much! I am so ignorant. Am I to kiss you now? Is the moment come?"

"Yes."

She kisses his lips; he kisses hers; they solemnly bless each other. The spare hand does not tremble as he releases it; nothing worse than a sweet, bright constancy is in the patient face. She goes next before him--is gone; the knitting-women count Twenty-Two.

Book: Almost any conversation in Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas. Tom Robbins has a delectable and enjoyable word rhythm and flow that is just great. Also it's written in the second person so... Yeah!

T.V.: To many to count but most recently

Movies: Again to many to count but most recently

Or this one  :crying:

Video Games: Shepard and Sovereign is good. I also liked most of the conversations between Altiar and Al Mualim in Assassin's Creed.

Anime: Idk probably something from Black Lagoon or Cowboy Bebop. Or some stupidly awesome **** Black Star said in Soul Eater.

Web-series: All of Sigma's dialouge in RvB.
