Or just toss in whatever and just enjoy it as a conditional damage bonus?
Any particular rune good for general purpose?

Many enemies are weak to spirit, so a spirit rune is probably good.

If you're using a staff you can't stack elemental damage so I normally go Corruption because it's good against living things otherwise as was mentioned spirit is probably the most general use just because it has the least amount of enemies who are resistant to it.
Fire, cold and electric have many that are vulnerable to them but they also have many who are resistant. Although in all honesty even in nightmare this games doesn't require a large amount of min-maxing.

Heh for some players, myself included, it's more about having an empty slot nagging at you.
I also agree with the Corruption suggestion. From what I've observed there are far more living type enemies than not. Do demons count as not-living for the purposes of this rune? At any rate, we fight a ton of humans, far more than any other type of enemy in this game: we've got templars, mages, many bandits, Venatori, Grey Wardens, Carta. Then there are the non-humans: various animals (bears!) and dragons that would fall under living as well. Then miscellaneous demons and undead.

With corrupting runes, I see the extra number pop up when hitting red templars, so I don't really get the point of cleansing runes. I just put corrupting runes on everything when available, spirit next (staves only), then whatever I have.

Spirit for staffs, lightning (because spirit is not allowed) for bows/melee.
