*bangs head on desk* Restart #3.....

This isn't a new thing by any means (DA:O has the dubious honour of me having to restart 7 times before I got things going), but it does make me wonder... Does anyone actually follow through their initial start with a full play through?

Never...did...that...ever...
My current main char which I also consider "canon" for the future took me at least 5 or so attempts until I was satisfied with the ingame-look ..I start to hate the intro and know the entire dialogue by now ... ![]()

And I was still close to another restart because I am not 100% satisfied with her lipstick-colour...but char-creation, the puzzle leading to a "perfect" char and the satisfaction from seeing him/her in the cutscenes looking good is half the fun for me ![]()

I'm on number 3 now. The first one went almost 15 hours before I said "I think I'd prefer browner hair, and a stronger chin".

Nope. I think from Origins to Inquisition, I've always completed my first play through from start to finish. I've had multiple play throughs, yeah, but I've always attached myself to the first character I create, and ultimately that becomes my 'canon' hero. Further still, I hated the look of my Origins character, he was totally wrong, and looked nothing like what I had in mind when I created him. I honestly thought that would make it hard to relate to, but years later, he's the only one (warden) I truly remember, and my last play through of origins was about 6 months ago. Also, it kinda adds to the variety. If each character was created with my image of perfection, I'd have three heroes that looked exactly the same ![]()

I can honestly say that I have never done that before. After character creation I accept the character as is and play through with it. I have had some pretty goofy looking and downright ugly characters too.

I have rerolled before. It took me four tries to get a female elf that I was happy with that I'm going to save for the Solas romance. But give me a human, a Qunari or a dwarf and I can work with it on the first go. I'm pretty pleased with the way my Cadash turned out. I did reroll her once, but that wasn't due to looks. I wanted to try the Bull romance instead of Blackwall's without breaking up with him. I wasn't terribly far into the game, and I had the benefit of knowing the earlier areas to catch up.

My first 30 hours were spent on character creation, another +10 hours if I count the number of times I restarted after watching the inital cutscene.
After spending numerous hours on my character's face, I came to a conclusion that as the virtual faces become more and more realistic, the formula hidden within a face becomes very complex; therefore making it extremely difficult to finely tune to your desired look.
What I eventually did was to record every face combination and start from where I left off using the previous configurations before I deleted the character. (Rather time consuming; however I knew that I would be spending countless hours with my initial creation)
Another advice I would like to give is that the beginning cutscenes may cause your character to appear rather ugly, when in truth, its the lighting and the contorted facial expression that conceals some of the beauty on your character's face.
If you are on the verge of uninstallation of Dragon Age Inquisition due to not being able to achieve the look you want, I higly recommend trying out other people's face sliders on that's the internet.
I am hoping we get something simliar to the Black Emporium that was present in Dragon Age 2 in the future.

I've created over 10 characters at this point. Eight of those have been deleted because of mistakes I made in the creation process. The others have endured.

Don't give up hope on being able to tweak your character's appearance. They are "looking into a face changer like DA2":

Although that's a bit much, even for me. I agree with you saying the first cutscene doesn't do your character justice. I walk up the hill, and use it to get a good look at their face, both in the shadows, and in the light.
People often say I spend too much time on looks (I don't if there's a default, like Hawke/Shep). Think about it like this though, an hour on creation or so, for a game I expect to play for 50+. I'm most concerned with humans and my female elf (always run a female elf eventually).

I don't really recall how long I spent with the character generator in DA:O, but for Inquisition I spent at least a full hour...and I'm no happier with the results on my male mage than I was with my Dwarven Warrior or Elven rogue in previous games.
I actually think the detail and multiple options for designing your look in Inquisition are a little overwhelming and I found it still hard to tweak the face to appear "just so"...but having said that, I keep at it as long as I'm still enjoying the process then go with what I've got. I never re-start just to change my appearance. I actually feel it improves my role playing experience to have to accept that, like in life, you never look perfect, and some things are beyond your control. In my opinion, if my character's ears stick out a little too much, or his eyes are a fraction to high above his cheekbones, that just adds dimension and depth to the character.

My modus operandi falls thusly:
Restart as many times as necessary right after character creation to keep adjusting/perfecting character (DAMMIT BIOWARE, BETTER CC LIGHTING!)
Once I've found a character I'm happy with, I generally plow through on a relatively complete playthrough before immediately starting again after with a massively completionist playthrough.
DAI has broken a couple of those rules for me for the first time ever - while I certainly restarted MANY times in my quest for what I felt was an attractive/worthy PC for me, I also abandoned my first playthrough at 45 hours to restart both to remake my character AND finally use the Qunari female I'd wanted to from the start.
I'm also doing as complete of a playthrough as possible - nearing 45 hours again and I haven't even pushed into near mid-game main plot territory as I'm currently neck deep in Exalted Plains finishing up there.
Also - dropped 10k for those amazingly hilarious/awesome Nuggalope mounts >.>

I'm not the only one! I spent a decent amount of time in the CC (an hour?) but I embrace any flaws I see later as part of my character. For example, I heard so many complaints before I started about male lips being too pink and shiny, so I turned the color down and the shininess off, and now his lips are a little too pale for perfect beauty, but who cares? Individual people have idiosyncrasies.
I also don't aim for the most beautiful character ever. This time I rolled as a ginger male elf, with blue eyes, pale skin, and freckles. I think he's cute looking, but he's not handsome or gorgeous...but I actually think that fits into this game better. He's romancing Cassandra, and Cassandra herself is no perfect beauty.
I mean, I fully support people having fun in this game however they want, but if you're getting annoyed and constantly restarting over and over, maybe it's time to give up the ideal of perfection and just embrace your character's slightly longer nose, or their hair that looked merium blond in the CC and now looks brown.
Just a suggestion.

I have no idea how people can just start a new game like this without finishing it I'd go insane. I love the CC other than how close up the angles can be sometimes.

I've not been counting, but it's a lot more than three, even if I ignore the two that were eaten by crashes during the series of cutscenes that occur before you can save. I'm not entirely satisfied with my current character (see avatar), but neither am I sure I can do better. The strange thing is that in-game sometimes she looks lovely, at least to me, and other times she looks homely, almost like a different character.

Nothing wrong with that for sure - I think for example that MY large amount of restarts comes down to not being the best with certain facets of facial adjustment. I always screw up chins/noses/cheeks - and with the way the CC lighting is, it can look fantastic there, you get into the main game and a few new angles/lighting scenes in and go "Oh god what have I done" - it's not about having an issue with imperfections, which ARE cool and realistic, it's more about shooting so far past the mark you wanted that it's beyond a mere imperfection and jars you too much you'd rather go back in and make another attempt before sinking hours and hours in to the meat of the game.

I was going along, nodding my head, until I came upon this. That's just blasphemy!
I'm not worried about perfect, I'm worried about what matches the character I want to play. 15 hours may seen like a lot, but it's only really past the first section or two on my first playthrouh, realizing my hair doesn't look right, and something's seriously off with the cheeks. I don't make perfect characters (except the female elf), but how can we really quanitify something as subjective as beauty? Except Cass =p

That's true. If the facial proportions are way off. It can make you look like Frankenstein. Since I'm an elf who is aiming for the cute look, it's probably a bit easier. Narrow face, high cheekbones, etc. Have you thought about taking one of the face presets you like and just tweaking it moderately or not at all? That still gives you plenty of chance for customization, like hair style/color, eye color, scars, etc while preventing the epic fails you can sometimes get by going off too much on your own on stuff like jaw lines.

I can understand why so many people restart Divinity: Original Sin. But not this game. This is like cheesy RPG. You don't even have total control of stats in this game. And the Borderlands-style skill trees can be reset.
I tried to create a George Parros, and he ended up looking like a red-headed Sam Elliott, with heavy mascara.
But who cares.
It's the lack of stat control that is the major downfall. Consoles are just ruining these RPG's. They feel like grade one math class now. With many of the stats untouchable, hidden, or being calculated for us.

Oh, I agree, Cass is beautiful, except not in a traditional sense...the folks that designed her did a great job of making a beautiful person who doesn't fit the "ideal" of feminine beauty.
That also reminds me...I didn't even intend to roll as a ginger. I found a hair color in the CC that looked like a cool mix of brown/blond/red and I picked it. Then when I got to the game I was like, "Holy cow, I'm a ginger!" But like I said, I tend to stick with what I start and accept flaws. The ginger really grew on me though to the point where I love it now.

Ideal isn't a notion I'm too keen on. I prefer Cass.
As for re-rolling based on appearence. People play games for various reasons, some people care more about a story, and the interactions than they do about the stats and gameplay. Some people like myself, care about both. Other people of course, can have different preferences. Some people would rather re-roll based on appearence and not care as much about stats in their RPGs. Since we're makin generalizations though, let's be honest. more than 8/10 people who would re-roll for stats would pump the same ones raised via passives in this game. What's the difference between raising 2 Dex. 1 Cunning manually every level, and ending up with 9 Dex and 3 Cunning after 4 levels of passives? There's freedom in choosing your allocation, but if you're re-rolling based on that...
Then again, if someone finds enjoyment in that, then that's on them. How one plays a single-player RPG isn't my concern.
Not to hammer the point home too much, but Cass.
