I restarted like 6 times... because I did not like my character. Then I made a nice human female and after 70 hours of playing her, I restarted as a dalish mage.
This is why we need an option to adjust the looks mid-game.
Which, thankfully - we'll see sooner rather than later given the devs have said they're working on one 
I always start these type of games on hard, get a feel for the combat, then restart on nightmare. But thankfully I haven't had to restart my first game because he was a male. Also my first playthrough is a discovery & make mistakes playthrough anyway, so it's meant to be imperfect.
I'm working on a second game character now, and it's going to be a female, so that's a whole different story. I'm constantly going through the opening cutscenes and a bit into the game to see how she looks. I only know how to do one sort of beautiful female human, so I'm working on tweaking it. Red hair, brown hair, green eyes, blue eyes? Dunno yet.
Don't give up hope on being able to tweak your character's appearance. They are "looking into a face changer like DA2":

I took 5 minutes do to mine; basic but really good looking.
The only time he doesn't look good is in the infamous chat with Varric where he gets cross-eyed...
Guys are easy to do good looking with the CC, women not so much.
I've learned to actually beat the game before I let my OCD kick in. Then I can make my perfect run. Just a sugestion, I know how it is

DAI is the first game where my first character looks so good that I'm afraid I'll never be able to create her like:
I'll replay her at some time because I had some decisions and outcomes I'd rather not have in her story, but as for what I made in the CC, I'm well satisfied.
