I am a lvl 15 warrior using 2 handed weapons and most of my party are at least lvl 13 and I STILL can't kill ANY dragons. This is freakin ridiculous IMO. No way should it be this hard to kill a dragon. I think Bioware got this wrong in a big way. Anyone else having this problem?

Try asking in the Combat forum for tips. Plenty of people there should be able to help.

Is your PC under-armored or under-weaponed for his level? You should be able to beat the hinterlands dragon by simple, hack and slash gameplay at your level.  How is your party organized?

I had the opposite problem (or opinion of them).  Which is to say, there is a lot of variance in player ability or just ways to approach the games combat in general.  If Bioware got anything "wrong" it's in the way they balance and differentiate the difficulty settings in the game, but the entire series has had that problem.

If you are playing on casual and still having trouble, I have to imagine you are just misunderstanding some basic fundamental game mechanic, like what tanking is, or what barrier does, etc.

What difficulty you are using? I managed to kill crestwood dragon at lv 13. Just be careful that your ranged don't get hit, keep them separate, and get your mage to cast barrier on your melee whenever you can and you should be fine.

What difficulty are you playing on? You should at least be able to beat Crestwood dragon by now.

I know at level 19, which I was when I tackled all the dragons I could literally steamroll over them on hard (used like 2 potions knocking off Emerald Graves dragon, didnt use any of the cheats(fire flask, thousand cuts, or invincible KE)and didn't even touch tac cam) so the fact you're having so much difficulty probably tells me you're not using the most optimized builds/.gear/tactics.

Heck, you can beat Crestwood dragon with just Cassandra, using shield wall. Of course, it'll probably take you half an hour, but it's pretty much foolproof unless you fail to block.

You should be able to kill the Hinterlands dragon by that level - I know I was a little less than that when I tried it. I did have to use health potions and had a couple of very hairy moments when the only character alive was my mage (so had to revive others under my bubble). But after much slogging and fighting against the controls I did down that dragon on first attempt.

I think they could be harder, honestly. But you should be able to tackle at least the Hinterlands dragon, maybe the Western Approach as well. It might behoove you to really take advantage of your tactics, think hard about who you're taking with you, etc. You'll definitely need a sword and board tank.

I'm pretty sure that Hinterlands dragon is only level 12-14 though. Most of them are higher.

Some dragons are harder than others. Try another dragon.

Gear and Difficulty.

If you are not fully geared and fight a Dragon on Nightmare... well it will be nightmarish.

Low level dragons are not worth killing anyways, too little materials.  ;)

Dragons are pretty easy once you get to know the tactics and they are pretty simple. I'm fighting them on hard with friendly fire on, and have only died once since my second try on my second dragon, I'm 7 out of 10 dead dragons, and by now I've seen all the abilities they have it seems, and they are all counterable.

You want to play easy mode, and not have to switch characters? take Vivienne when she is already a knight enchanter and she can solo them, no matter the difficulty.

You dont' want to use a Knight Enchanter? bring 2 mages with you if you want to have a 2 hander warrior and a tank warrior, and have one of them spam barrier, and the other one have a reserve barrier just in case you need one for a specific time.

Truth be told, you don't even need any of these, those are just easy "tactics", but once you've learnt all the dragon abilites, its easy to counter them, doesn't really matter the composition, as long as you have a tank.

If this is another "I'm playing on a high difficulty and the game is too difficult for me, fix this Bioware" thread...

1. If you haven't already use crafted gear. And mod it properly as well, especially with fade touched mats.

2. If you're fighting a level 16 dragon, as a 15 player with lvl 13 companions you will run into issues. (usually companions are 1 level behind the pc btw, how did you manage 2?) They will need to be within 2 levels of the dragon to even have a chance.

I have killed 9/10 dragons without any issue. They were challenging fights, but can be overcome with proper gearing and strategy.

gear up specifically for the dragon you are fighting. Fire resistant armor for fire dragons for instance. Make sure your weapons have a dragon killing rune in them and are not based on a element that the dragon is immune to. Have a mage who can cast barrier and a warrior with guard.

I was level 14 when I killed my first dragon and yes it was difficult but if you prepare for them and bring the right team they will go down.

You should be able to kill the Hinterlands dragon at lvl 15, as I just killed it with my lvl 14 Inquisitor. I think the best suggestion I can give you is pretty well the same thing everyone else has suggested, which is gear up properly and choose your party wisely.

If it helps at all, my party consisted of my duel daggers rogue, 2 handed Iron Bull, sword and shield Cassandra and Solas who I have spect in Spirit and Winter (so essentially, I haven't really changed anything that bioware didn't start me off with). My party didn't have any runes or weapons that did damage specifically against dragons, but I did have them equipped with a few fire resistant things and weapons that did cold damage.

The other thing that I found extremely helpful was having every party member equipped with both regeneration potions and fire resistance tonics. I had everyone drink a fire res. tonic before we all charged in, and then I had them drink one anytime the effect wore off. The regeneration potions I had my party use any time there was a slight lull in the battle which helped so they didn't just chug all the health potions, leaving you with none when you desperately need one.

good luck!

If you're having trouble keeping enough health potions, just set your companions to leave more in the options menu. You may have to give them potions yourself if you want them to live, but that makes it your choice instead of the AI's.

1) Dragons are supposed to be unbalanced. They are no mandatory unless you have OCD.

2) If you are havving struggle, then you are obviously doing something wrong. Either strategically (e.g. not gearing/building your characters properly) or tactically (you know, you can't just press R and watch it die like most other fights).

If you make Bull a tank,(like, statted, skilled, and geared) you should be good. But if it's two 2h warriors and 2 mages, you might be in for a rough time.

They did make a big deal about how the dragons are hard.

Wow I have to wait till I'm at least a lvl 18? That is what I mean by being unbalanced. I shouldn't have to wait until I'm that high to kill a dragon. I will probably finish the main story long before then.

The hinterlands dragon is definitely lower than that. And I killed the Western Approach dragon at 15 or 16. It might have been level 17, I don't remember. All the other ones I've encountered so far have been 19/20.
