If you make Bull a tank,(like, statted, skilled, and geared) you should be good. But if it's two 2h warriors and 2 mages, you might be in for a rough time.

They did make a big deal about how the dragons are hard.

I know Bioware mentioned you should be a high lvl character before attempting to kill a dragon but they didn't say how high and I would think lvl 15 should be more than high enough considering I have played the game for 65 + hrs already.

You can definitely kill at least 2 of 'em.

Make sure you've got a dedicated tank with lots of guard generators. Also, make sure you get the potion upgrade.

Honestly, I roll with Cass tanking and she hasn't used a single potion in about 10 levels. I don't even think she's taken any damage. She's always got full guard.

I'm playing on normal as well. That might be relevant.

The thing that turned the tide for dragon battles for me was potions. I'd largely ignored them previously, but if you're party's carrying a load of Healing Mists, that's a lot of extra healing.

As for this dragon in particular, it's level 12. I did it at level 19 and it was a complete joke. It does like to fly around a lot, so ranged companions are useful, and fire resistance gear is obviously ideal. And check your mages staves are doing cold damage (or at least, not fire).

If this is another "I'm playing on a high difficulty and the game is too difficult for me, fix this Bioware" thread...

Did I ask Bioware to fix this? I don't think so but thanks for playing.

You should be able to kill the Hinterlands dragon at lvl 15, as I just killed it with my lvl 14 Inquisitor. I think the best suggestion I can give you is pretty well the same thing everyone else has suggested, which is gear up properly and choose your party wisely.

If it helps at all, my party consisted of my duel daggers rogue, 2 handed Iron Bull, sword and shield Cassandra and Solas who I have spect in Spirit and Winter (so essentially, I haven't really changed anything that bioware didn't start me off with). My party didn't have any runes or weapons that did damage specifically against dragons, but I did have them equipped with a few fire resistant things and weapons that did cold damage.

The other thing that I found extremely helpful was having every party member equipped with both regeneration potions and fire resistance tonics. I had everyone drink a fire res. tonic before we all charged in, and then I had them drink one anytime the effect wore off. The regeneration potions I had my party use any time there was a slight lull in the battle which helped so they didn't just chug all the health potions, leaving you with none when you desperately need one.

good luck!

Ok thanks for the suggestions.

Haha, Varric happened! I love how everyone calls him garbage, but really he's ****** amazing. That's his Artificer Focus ability.

Funny thing is that the dragon from Storm Coast (19lvl) seemed easier to me than the one from Hinterlands (12lvl). Mostly because she had only the shield as "special skill" which I could easyly break with my Spirit Blade while the one from Hinterlands burned my ass and my stubborn party kept standing in the fire.

Just make sure to have a warrior with sword+shield and 2 mages who keep up barrier. Makes dragon fights absolutely trivial.

Personnally, I find that the AI is very frustrating when fighting dragons. I use the tactical camera, but the pathfinding is horrible. I hate when party members walk through flames...

I'm level 20 (rogue) and tried to fight the Sandy Howler earlier (with Iron Bull and 2 mages). I brought her life down to 36 000... And then died because of flames and dragonlings that kept spawning...

Frustrating !

I actually found the dragons too easy, even on hard difficulty.

If you have a party that's built and geared well, then after you have fought one or two dragons you will know what to do and should be able to take the rest of them down methodically. Sure they are intense fights, but they are for the most part very similar fights too.

I am a lvl 15 warrior using 2 handed weapons and most of my party are at least lvl 13 and I STILL can't kill ANY dragons.

You can do it in real time, but if you want to make killing dragons even easier, pause the fight every second. This will ensure every single character deploys or executes an ability or skill. With no time wasted. The dragon won't stand a chance.

You'd be surprised how many seconds are wasted in a fight because you can't think fast enough, or click the buttons fast enough.

Also, I can't imagine why people are using 2 Champion-trained weapon and shield fighters to do this. You only need one Franklin Richards to take out a dragon. Not two.

Use your two-hander for offense, Blackwall as Champion for defense, and two ranged units. (archer and a mage)

Pause every second or two. Laugh at how easy it was.

Then go play a real RPG.

The two mages are fine, though mostly unnecessary. You need a tank. Whether that takes the form of replacing The Iron Bull or just using one Magician, is entirely up to you.

Well, The Iron Bull tanks quite well usually. He always falls last. The problem is that he can't keep the aggro for this dragon...

But I'll find a solution. Tomorrow she'll be defeated.

The problem is that I can't have The Iron Bull with an other melee character because of FF. Too bad. He likes dragons. :-D

I actually love the Dragon battles, just because a Dragon is "level 15" doesn't mean it shouldn't demolish you're party in a glance! You need to be cautious when you're in the Dragon battles and constantly switch party members.

So... Yeah. With Cassandra and Vivienne, dragon fights really are a walk in the park...

Just wait till you accidentally stumble upon the three in empris du lion! 19, 21, 23! Those are rough.

Generally speaking though, if you're having trouble with the level 12 dragon in Hinterlands, and you're higher level, you need to go back to skyhold and re-evaluate your equipment. Double check how you've speced yourself and your team, how you've geared them. Resistance gear is important for pretty much everything past Normal setting.

Make yourself and your team members better gear, and make sure you're bringing a tank. My general go-to for Dragons is two ranged (Mage and either sera/varric/myself if I'm a bow rogue) and two melee (Cass or Blackwall as tank, Ironbull or Cole or myself if I'm a 2handed war or daggers rogue). The only time I've deviated from that setup was when I was a mage myself, then I brought a second mage, a bow rogue, and a tank.

And, if all else fails, come back later. Or lower the settings to casual if you're not already there ;p

On Normal, I beat the Hinterlands dragon at level 14 on Normal.

My party was Cass/Dorian/Solas.  I find that two mages with barrier a ton.

Everyone had some sort of fire resist gear, including arms and legs.

Best crafted weapons I could get.

Grenades, grenades, grenades.

Regen potions are really nice as well.

Half of that battle with that pain in the butt is waiting for her to finish circling the area with the dragonlings.  Her fireballs can pack a mean punch, even with some resist gear.  Once she's done and settled into her area in the back, then you can start heading there.

At least the level 23 is pretty easy to avoid.  The 19 and the 21 level dragons though...yeah OP, just be careful in NE Emprise du Lion.

Edit: When you get there, bring frost resist gear as well as some electrical resist gear.  You're gonna need it.

Problem is that I don't know sh*t about building character skills or much about combat tactics. I just want the story. Give me god mode.

I beat the Hinterlands Dragon at Level 11.  It was a long, planned out, micromanaged fight, and, man, was that a rewarding victory.  I'm now at level 18 and pretty much destroyed The Western Approach dragon.  I beat the Crestwood Dragon at around level 15 or 16.  The only challenge so far was the Hinterland dragon.  I just haven't found any of the other dragons, but I'm guessing they're probably be more of a challenge.

(While I like non scaling enemies, the problem is that you can you actually overlevel yourself pretty quickly in this game.  I haven't even gone to the Hissing Wastes or Emprise Du Lion, yet.  I mean, I actually want to clear SOME of these maps. I did go to the Emerald Graves way too early and got destroyed, so I tucked tail and ran.  Just now getting back.)

You're safe to go into the Hissing Wastes, so long as you're a little careful.  The rift demons were about at level 19-20, and the dragon is level 19 or 20.  There is some wyverns and the like walking around, but there isn't a ton of mobs outside of rifts, a dragon and some Venatori

Warning: There is a canyon in the same area as the merchant stand.  You'll know it when you see it.  Just past the merchant stand, as the path winds towards the northwest, there are level 19 poisonous spiders that have a high respawn rate (I timed it last night.  100 seconds,) and they do come 1-2 at a time.  It isn't too far north of the first camp, so be careful.

You should be fine then, since the dragons are completely unrelated to the story. You don't have to get within 100 miles of them if you don't want to.
