I'm a shield warrior and I'm proud to be the tank for my party. From what it looks like they kinda switched a few things , Champion is a total tank spec but Templar although it does extra damage against Demon's and has a huge magic resistence it also seems like it's a support boost spec, boosting your party's attack and defense.
In the long run which is better , Champion Or Templar?

My mistake on the title I was thinking "wrong" in my head and I must have typed it by mistake.
"In the long run , which is better Champion or Templar"
Edit: " huh didn't know I could edit the title O_o well I fixed it haha. "

I do think Champion is top tier, just not fun.

Templar is a little more tactical, what with dispel, party buff(s), and ranged stun/nuke.
Champion is more durable, with higher max guard and armor, one minute cooldown passive immortality. And then there is the two things that make champion fun: Walking Fortress and To the Death. Both of these pretty much trivialize boss encounters, To the Death especially, as it allows you and your party to do massive damage to a single target, while (when upgraded with En Garde) allowing you to generate guard passively, constantly. It also makes soloing dragons a joke.
The Templar has more tools for tanking, the Champion has fewer, stronger tools. Personally I ran with Cass as my Templar buff-bot and went Champ myself.

Everyone who says Templars are better than Champions have no idea what they're doing.
They've probably invested more points into the other Warrior skill trees than the Templar skill tree itself.
Why?
Because Templars deal next to no damage. The only time when they deal damage is when there are demons or if they're using the other warrior powers.
At least Champions can keep enemies off of their teammates and soak up tons of damage.
Now I ask you this question:
Do you want to deal damage SOMETIMES (1/3 of the game is probably demons.. and that's being generous)? Or do you want to be immortal? Both Champion and Templar basically deal the same amount of damage, but Champions can outlive them by a very large margin.

Champion. Honestly I'm really not seeing the whole extra damage against demons being that useful.

Champion for being super-tough. Templar if you want to RP a super-devout Andrastian.

Champion if you like to control the battle field and Templar if you like to explode (Wrath + Spell Purge) any stunable non-boss near you. Both are fun and great support for any decent AI party. The Champion setup the battlefield to let his party rock. The templar can do this to an extent but can also contribute some heavy AE damage.
You will use different gear for both play styles. The controlling Champion needs absolutely no offensive stat. You can stack stamina, ranged and magic defense and are golden. The Templar will need an +25/50 stamina neck piece and also some Attack or your explosions from Wrath/Spell Purge are medicore. But an Templar can be also almost indestructible and the AE explosions are in the 5-9k range which is not that bad.

Dispell is cool and all, the combos are nice, and more damage is never bad, but in a tank, I'll always only care for aggro management and surviving. Champion provides a third taunt, more guard generation than you'll have use for, some pretty good damage mitigation passives, and on-demand invulnerability. To the Death+ alone trumps everything that the Templar can provide.
Also, if you have a competent damage dealer, the dmg boost that To the Death provides to your whole party will tranlate in much more DPS than anything the Templar can ever hope to accomplish, be it against demons or otherwise.

I'm currently pursing the champion path right now, but Cass's templar abilites I think are pretty nice when closing rifts

Champion is better for tanking period. However, you can safely tank with a Templar as long as you're not on Nightmare difficulty. If you do though, I would highly recommend getting most of the skills in Vanguard.

You can safely tank with no specialization on Nightmare...
Post-Skyhold gear just scales way faster than enemies.

Templar. Cause champion is awesomely tough but a little boring. Better for an AI tank than a PC.
Personally I went for Champion, easyer for AI to paly. That way I can try out all the other classes, while the AI palys the inquisitor.
Also if $hit hits the fan, and everything goes wrong then the Inquisitor is going to be the last one standing and can often save the day - although it usally takes a while.

I'm playing on nightmare right now and both are viable. Champions are very tanky, though they do lack the punch without support. Templars are less tanky but do a lot more damage alone, especially to demons/mages with the wrath of heaven + dispel combo. That's massive AoE damage, and if you add in the upgraded charging bull perk, wrath of heaven could be cast with free of stamina. Very handy in rift fights.
So it really comes down to who you want to roll with in your party.
