Well, I am almost through with the game and contemplate another playthrough. But before I do this I would like some advice on how to access the different areas after the incidents at Haven.

The problem for me was: First the difficulty on normal was way to low for me, I only realized this too late. And then I guess I accessed the areas a bit too wrong after Haven. I first went Hissing Wastes with level 12 or so, and when I went through all that (which was still on normal against lvl. 15 onwards rather doable) most other regions .. never had much challenge left, not to speak of petty loot and so on...Exalted plains on lvl 20+ even on hard is .. not very entertaining I have to say...I wish they'd boost some area in difficulty when you already are high-level, just a bit at least...

So...what would the experienced player recommend? Also in regards to the strategy-Map-Stuff? Go as soon as possible to Crestwood and subsequent missions? Do that Orlais/Winterpalace thing right on (I delayed that very much, almost did every other non-main-mission before). And what makes more sense story-wise for you?

And is Nightmare really that bad? I played some hours on Hard with a Dalish dual-wield rogue and found it okay, but not super-hard either?

Well I haven't beaten the game yet, but I am about 90 hours in. What I discovered the another night is that certain main story quests will scale with you, but only depending on the area/enemy. So for example I was running the Exalted Plains quest and I was level 18 or so while everything else was around level 15. After I got done with that area, I went into the Hissing Wastes and everything was scaling to my level. The Dragon for example leveled up to level 20 with me. Because of that The Hissing Waste was actually a challenge for me. So now that I noticed that I think the best way to go about visiting area's is too do the main quests first because they have a certain level range -- and they tell you the range before you accept  the quest. I think that's the best way to go about it, though honestly they should have made everything scale to your level throughout the whole game.

As for difficulty, anything besides Nightmare is a breeze. Frankly because even on Nightmare the game isn't that hard. Starting out in Nightmare mode is tough for the first few hours, but once you get your hands on some solid gear and level up a bit you'll find yourself not having too much trouble. I find that the best way to play Dragon Age: Inquisition is to scale the game yourself. That's how I do it anyway. I start the game on Normal and once I get more levels and equipment I bump it up to Hard and then finally Nightmare. I've been playing on Nightmare for about 70 hours now. I find that doing this makes the game feel like its naturally progressing in difficulty, so it keeps things fresh and challenging without frustrating the player.

What I am trying this time around is being more realistic with time passage. When I leave the base, it is like a long trip and I am not going back for a while. This doesn't mean that I am going to complete every quest in an area before leaving, it just means there needs to be some significant reason to go back to base or move on. I just want it to feel right,

I unlocked all the areas on the west side of the map before ever venturing forward, On my way to meet up with Hawk I am going to go across the map, through each zone, like I am on an expedition that will take months. The need to get to Hawk is a good excuse to B line through those areas as fast as possible, then I can hit more of these maps on the treck back to base.

No. It's rather easy, to be frank.

Generally, there are 2 ways to decide where you should go, optimally:

1) Resources for crafting. I.E. I\'d go right to Emerald to get Great Bear hide for my Rogue.

2) Gear. Amulet of Power in Crestwood, for instance, is a good selling point.

I am a completionist, so I do everything before I move on. It's actually quite fine, as most quest level with you. By doing everything I am often 1 level above the enemies, but that's fine. The challenge is early game anyways!

They did a very poor job scaling the game for the completionist. Its very easy to outlevel most of an entire zone before you set foot in it.

Hinterlands - Stormcoast - Fallow Mire - Forbidden Oasis - Crestwood - Western Approach - Exalted Plains - Emerald Graves - Emprise Du Lion - Hissing Wastes.

Roughly in that order if you don't want to outlevel anything.

How can Exalted Plains be after Fallow Mire when Fallow Mire starts at 12? Exalted Plains caps at level 11 doesn't it? Unless this is explicitly about the areas opened by the wartable operations?  I mean every time I go there the content such as clearing the ramparts is grey level 11 mobs.... unless I skip lots of content and make it a point to go there before level 11.

Very confused now lol

That's true enough.

Pretty sure Exalted Plains caps higher than 11. It's more like 15 or 16. And Crestwood, Mire, Exalted Plains and Western Approach are all very close and more or less interchangeable. Certain quests chains cap at lower levels than the general area here and there.

Hmm I just checked it. I unlocked the area and traveled to it as a level 14. Had never been there and everything is level 11.  On what platform are you playing where they get leveled up?  Are you on PC too?

I did:

Hinterlands, Storm Coast, Fallow Mire, Oasis, Crestwood, Exalted Plains, Western Approach, Emerald Graves, Hinterlands, Emprise.

I outleveled mobs around Fallow Mire and found Exalted and WA a little tedious. I reached 19 in Emerald Graves against level 15 mobs... but after I cleared the Freemen the Red Templars there and some of the rifts and stuff in the north were level 19 too so it got better. This time I'm going to leave Oasis and Storm Coast a little later, after 15.

Exalted was definitely about 15 when I started it.

Are you on PC too?  Or some other platform.  I've never seen anything in this zone higher than 11 except for in the operation unlock areas.  It's a bummer because it's a fun area if you can get it "at level".

OK. Maybe I was confused with the operation areas, I just traveled back there and the wildlife is indeed level 11 so I must be mistaken. The wildlife in the unlockable areas is 15.

On a side note, I hate how I can never find mobs in areas I have completed, especially to check abilities. Had to run for miles to find an enemy lol.  :)

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will try to stick to that order for next playthrough. But yeah, scaling should have been a bit more challenging. Especially the later missions. I did Arbor Wilds with lvl. 23 Mage and it was such a cakewalk on hard, should have gon all in and doing it nightmare.

Guess this will be worth a try, going nightmare from the start, learning the tac-cam, and finally suffer defeats by dragons
