Every time a new Bioware game is coming out I see trailers or teasers for characters, whom always rub me the wrong way, characters I already grow a dislike for (started back with KOTOR, then there was that trailer for Jack in Mass Effect 2 and more recently Iron Bull). Then I play the game and the characters I always expect the hate the most are the ones I end up loving. I didn't like Iron Bull at all, now I can't imagine not wanting to hang out with the big guy. I was even a Sera hater at first, but she really grew on me.

You do this to me every time Bioware, always making me fall in love with your characters.

It's probably you and not BioWare. I still hate Sera and Vivienne.

Vivienne is a bit of an ice queen, but I learned to really respect and appreciate her. I would say out of all the group so far, her and Blackwall are the ones I wouldn't necessarily bring to a party, but I would go to them for advice.

No that is Bioware to perfection, they make characters that split opinion. If everybody loved all of their characters they would feel that they failed.

When I first heard Sera talking all I could think of was Lil Jacob from GTA IV, it was like she was speaking a different language. As time went on I even got a lot of disapproval from her, then we had one conversation where we finally had something in common and since then we've been buddies and panthers in crime

I think it's Bioware. You hate them for a reason. I hated Fenris and Sebastian, and it's not because they were poorly written. Overall, I think characterization is one of their greatest strengths (the DA team moreso than the Mass Effect team).

I have to say that I'm pretty happy with this crop as well. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of watching Freddie Prinze Jrs interview, and and now whenever I hear Iron Bull talking, I can't unsee the face he makes when recording.

Yep. It's a cruel world where this kind of stuff keeps happening. Now I'll have to play the next Dragon Age, just for symmetries sake. Wow. My last sentence made no sense at all, did it? Oh well. Nothing like a non sequitur to make a fellow look like a fool.

I hate Sera and Vivienne because they are poorly written. They're caricatures, they feel like flat archetypes of ideologues.

I mean, I take issue with the whole "divisive characters must mean great characters!" trope, too. I think saying, "if people can't agree that they are great, then that is the very definition of greatness!" is silly. But that's kind of a side argument. Sera and Vivienne both feel like they were written to fill ideological roles, not to be characters.

I loved both Sera and Vivienne.

By which I mean, of course, that I hated them both as people, but I included them in my party as often as I could anyway, just because I found the way they sparked off other characters (and each other) was amusing.

On topic, the character I really expected to dislike (and who surprised me by quickly becoming my favourite) was Cassandra.

Yeah, see, Cassandra and Iron Bull were actual characters with characteristics and frailties that we human beings would recognize in ourselves. Sera and Vivienne were just a mash up of characteristics that we only ever assign to Other People. Usually people we don't actually know and don't particularly like. And usually characteristics we only spotted on supporting characters in teenage coming-of-age movies.

If this were the Spoiler section, I'd go on about Iron Bull. "As a person," I didn't particularly like him, but as a character? Iron Bull is a great character, in my opinion.

I think all the characters are very well written actually, and having completed my first playthrough, I tried to utilize all of them to get acquainted.

They are coherently motivated, if occasionally perplexing. Kind of like my real friends... ;)

Take Cole and Viv along together sometime.  Actually, take Cole along with anybody.  Creepy insightful FTW. :D

Varric is still one of the most fun and interesting characters. Iron Bull is absolutely fantastic, Cass is a iron wall at the start, but she really starts opening up towards the middle and has one of the best side quest cutscenes in the game. Vivi is boring and straight forward. Dorian I didn't like at first, but after learning what he went through growing up, I felt bad for him and started caring about him more. Cole is weird, very weird but he truly wants to help people and he knows his limits. Blackwall is rather meh, he seems like a no hold barred type of warrior.

I never watched any character trailers, and I never do. I find them silly but I get what they're for. I'd rather learn about the characters myself through the gameplay.

The Cole and Vivienne combo was exactly what I was thinking of when I said "supporting characters in teenage coming-of-age movies..." I feel like Cole totally exposes Vivienne to be exactly that.

If you haven't done so, yeah, definitely try this pair out. Especially after the Wicked Eyes quest.
