Hello! I've decided to go ahead and slowly upgrade my gaming PC and this game just sorta pushed me to do it. Right now my PC meets the minimum specs and it's played every other game I love flawlessly on highest settings for years. Unfortunately this game is a much more intensive engine and requires a lot more power so I guess it's time to upgrade.

I'm aware that nothing short of a complete rehaul or new PC will work flawlessly but I'd like some input on the hardware I should look into for my re-build. I built Bertha (that's her name) myself years ago on a budget and I'm no less strapped now.

Please be aware that I've got a kid to take care of so money is absolutely a huge factor in this. I'm perfectly happy with used or refurbished parts so long as they're in working condition. Mostly I just want to know which parts I should be looking into.

For example, what would be a good graphics card to upgrade to that will do great with this game but won't break my bank? I prefer Nvidia cards so would a GTX 660 or 670 be able to play on ultra or would I need higher?

Just looking for advice from those who play this game on different setups and know more than I. Thanks!

I can play on high+ at 1440p with a single 670 4gb at or near 60fps in most areas.  Sucks I can't use the two I have in SLI, but the single card works fine.

If you're playing at 1080p a single 670 or 660 should be fine for ultra - you might have to make compromises on anti-aliasing though.

Just what is your budget exactly?

Get GTX970, 8 gigs of RAM, some i5 CPU, 500-600 watt PSU and mobo+case to put everything in. Maybe it's expensive but you'll play everything on ultra@1080p@30+fps until next generation of consoles(meaning PS5 not PS4) is out.

Go visit a proper tech forum for such a question. It'll be better and you might learn enough that you won't need to pose the same question ever again.

Unless it must be an nvidia gpu an old 290 would be both cheaper and more powerful than gtx970 and there's quite a lot of used ones for sale as it's no longer worth it to mine btc's with em so many are trying to get rid of their mining rigs.

What resolution are you looking to play on? 1080p? You're probably going to need a GTX 780 or better to play on ultra and maintain a good frame rate. A GTX 970 should do, I see them selling for $350 or so.

A GTX 660 or 670 simply isn't going to cut it for ultra settings. I run the game on ultra with 2xmsaa at 1080p, average 55 fps or so, my card is much stronger than any single GTX 600 series card. If you've got an ultra HD monitor, (higher resolution than 1080p), you're probably going to need at least one GTX 980 for DA:I ultra settings.

Also, as you may know, you're going to need a quad core or greater cpu. I'd get one of the 4th generation i7 processors from Intel.

Intel Quad core 2.4GHz

is that an old Core2Quad Q6600?

cheaper? yes, it sure is. more powerful? nope.

but i would recommend the R9 290 too, or at least a R9 280X, Nvidia doesnt really have a good performance-card right now. plus the R9 support Mantle, which could be useful with your old CPU.
4GB RAM is not that much... dont know if DAI needs more for high details.
btw what PSU do you have?

Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz (what I had) doesn't perform too well with an upgraded video card for this game, tho there is some improvement. I had to update to a new CPU, MB, and RAM before performance became more stable/smoothe.

I'm thinking any 9 series card would be too expensive for me. I was hoping to stay under 200 if at all possible for just the graphics card. I've already got a great case luckily and a new power supply just waiting to  be installed.

then buy a R9 280(X), the 280 is as powerful as the 670, the 280X as the 680/770, and both have 3GB VRAM instead of only 2, are usually well overclockable and support Mantle. i prefer Nvidia too, but there is no Nvidia card that i can recommend in this price area.
which PSU exactly do you have?

lol@ "I can play this with a single GTX670@60fps in 1440p"

Don't trust statements like this one. I've a GTX690 runnning at ~90 to 100% load, so basically 2xGTX680 and it barely runs at 60fps most of the time in high settings in 1920x1080 without MSAA. In areas with lots of NPC's the frames drop into the 50's. I also play it in full DX11 support on Windows 8.1. A single GTX680 is like 30/40 fps most of the time and lol in 1440 it's even less.

If you really want stable 60fps (like in open areas with lots of stuff going on and not only while looking into the sky or a wall), not only for this game, also for new games in the future, go and buy 2x GTX970's or wait some time for a GTX9xx release with 8GB ram. A quality 550/650 PSU should do the job.

The problem is more than just the GPU. A core2quad is your bottleneck. You stick a 670GTX in there, you will likely see very little increase in performance as the CPU is holding it back. You really do need to upgrade the CPU/chipset as well. On the plus side, i5's are reasonably priced and motherboards and RAM are cheap. It's hard to help you with an upgrade path without knowing all ofyour specs, but something that old usually would require an overhaul of sorts.

Let's see your specs and, we need to know the wattage of your power supply. SO need GPU, CPU, RAM, PSU Wattage. also desired resolution and quality of graphics in the game.

Time to rebuild.

Always an exciting time!

I would start with cpu-mobo combo. You can get away with 200-250 if you are near a microcenter and go for a new i5.

Than you'll need to check out and see if you're psu will be ok with a new gpu volt wise.

I'd go with gpu last, and that goes by budget really.

DERP I read that as CPU. XD

Current Power Supply is 500w

I don't know for sure what the new one is (Technically it's a christmas present from my husband so I can't open and check) but it's better than my old one.

Yeah, I figured somethin' along those lines. I'm definitely going to need a new processor. I've been looking at motherboard/CPU combos. I have a crapton of DDr3 Ram sitting around so I'm not worried about that at all. I considered buying a processor separate but while I'm very comfortable building a PC I am terrified of shorting out a processor so I'd rather just buy a combo unit.

Husband says I have to stay under 900 no matter what or he'll rip my face off with a spoon and feed it to the baby.

Just for that quote if you send me your PayPal in pm I'll chip in $25. But it's for the computer, not the baby. Tell your fabulous husband hands off.

For a top-quality build at a price that you can't match even if you shop the Newegg "Shellshockers" and are willing to put in months waiting for the parts you need to go on sale (and have the patience and expertise to build it yourself) see the Digital Storm Vanquish II  line of pre-built machines.  They start at US$700, and you won't be sorry!

I went with the Slade because I wanted more room for expansion (currently have four SS/HDDs and two optical drives installed) and I wanted QUIET!  But the Vanquish II is a great deal from a great company.

(Oh, and I agree with hwlrmnky.  Tell hubby "Hands off!" when you get your new rig.)

Awwww that's so sweet! I don't let him touch my computers...after fixing his laptop for him I don't trust him with anything more complex than a laptop! I think our son might be able to work a computer with less viruses!

I don't mind if mine are quiet but I'll check that out! Pre-built rigs are nice but I'm comfortable building my own and I'm going with whatever's cheapest. If I could get a pre-built for cheap though...that would rock so hardcore!

Well he is 6 '6" but he's way too skinny to be a qunari. Maybe part Krogan though....

I'm happy with my monitor (It's not fabulous or anything but it's not very old and it works great) OS I might need at some point because stupid windows still thinks it's not a legal copy after doing an HD wipe. I think I have a windows 8 disk somewhere though from when I worked with Staples.

OOOh... an SSD. THAT is something I need! My C drive is only 40 gb right now (It's ancient) and windows takes up 35 of that. I run everything off of my D drive.

Suggestions:

#1:  get more ram, have at least 8, 16 would be better, ram is fairly inexpensive

#2:  upgrade your video card, the GTX 770, while definitely not the fastest Nvidia card, is kind of a sweet spot between performance and cost.  check out prices on Amazon.

#3:  upgrade your processor, more expensive option, plus you will be limited by what motherboard you have in your system.

#4:  taking all those upgrades together, it might be less expensive, or at least more economical to buy a new system, although that cost is all at once instead of spread out over a few months.
