After some recent promotions I noticed that I was no longer getting one-hit killed versus Demon Commander on my mage characters.
After some (probably flawed) thinking, my hypothesis is that it is related to the amount of +Willpower and Magic Defense that I now have. At level 1 though, it seems the only thing that has changed significantly since near launch when I was a rag doll toy for the Demon Commander, is the amount of Willpower/Magic Defense.
Willpower total: 48 @ level 1 (maybe slightly more for unknown +Willpower for the class itself)
Promotions: 10 + 13 promotions for 23
Sorceror's Staff: +25 Willpower
Armor and Accessories do not currently have any +Willpower, but the Armor does have +7% Magic Defense (2 native, 5 from upgrade slot)
So, based on info I have seen on here that would mean my Magic Defense is increased by +24% (48 * 0.5 per Willpower) and +7% from the armor... 31% reduced magic damage.
Last night I promoted and got lucky that my first match, Routine, was vs Demons on the Necromancer so I could try to isolate any chance passives or +stats while leveling, or other aspects of leveling were affecting the one-hit kill nature of his ground attack.
Two times, with full health and no barrier I was hit by Demon Commander's ground attack and left with maybe 15-20% hp. A few weeks ago I am certain that even on higher level mages this was a one-hit kill.
So, the point of this 'too long for the internet' post... are others that have gotten pretty significant (>30% of Magic Defense) noticing that Demon Commander is not as terrifying if you lose track of him and get hit since he doesn't insta-gib you when he pops out of the ground?
Or other ideas of what might be leading to my higher survival chance versus that attack when I fail to actually dodge out of it?
Random other stuff people might ask:
Armor on the Necromancer is the Mortalitisi (Soulbinder) 83 armor
Warrior promotions are at 3, so only +15 hp from that.
Other armor stat is +14% fire resist, but I don't think Demon Commander uses fire so I have discounted that (for now)
