As much as I'd love to see a full expansion pack for this game, like awakening, this suggestion is not for that.
This is a suggestion for a questing zone complete with a story chapter. I wouldn't want to suggest the actual story for the zone, but I will suggest this.
Whoever the enemy is, whether it be some generic necromancer who's raising the dead or the Natives of the Dales (the resistance fighters who work with the Red Templar) or Corypheus himself (although I would recommend it not be him or the red templars , because when they fail it would present the villain as too weak, and reduce how threatening he is), part of the story should include your camp being overrun.
Next the villain gives you the chance to sacrifice the inquisitor. You can either choose to give yourself up, in which case you tell your companions to retreat without you, and attempt a rescue (in the final part of the mission, so you wont have to drudge too far without the inquisitor) using only party members. Or you can choose to fight, in which case your companions get captured, and you have to attempt a rescue with the inquisitor, but without anyone else you had before the camp got overrun.
My reasons for this are such that this way you can have a side mission which gives companions you wouldn't normally use the chance to participate, and it gives you the opportunity to mix up the dynamic, allowing you to make decisions as your companions for a mission or two.
TLDR
Camp gets overrun
Villain does classic villain thing and tells you to give up the inquisitor to save your friends
--Choose yes, and your companions mount a rescue
--Choose no, and your companions get captured, you rescue them
