Cool, what did you think of them?

I'm currently reading Leviathan by Scott Westerfield

A alternate history version of WW1 based around the fictional son of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Europe is divided into two Factions: The Clankers, countires with highly develop steam technology and machines and The Darwinists, countries following the theories of Charles Darwin with mutated and genetically altered animals.
It's quite a light read and the detailed pencil illustrations are quite beautiful.

Wow, that sounds pretty interesting. I'll have to check it out.

The 'Watch' series are interesting & quite fun takes on the good/evil light/dark concepts with some twists, but the 'Last Watch' is weaker and althought it ends the sequence it is obvoiusly a cash in on the success of the first 2 after the films were released outside Russia.

Although you did miss one book there, Twilight Watch whic takes place between Day Watch and Last Watch.

Read that some books ago. It's cool and if you're a bit into steam punk (some may consider it steam punkt) you will probably like it.

I also read "The Magicians" someone mentioned before. Also pretty interesting.

Right now I'm reading "The Book Thief".
It's from the perspective of death and involves the life of a German girl in WW2 although the war itself plays only a side roll. Well written and interesting story.

I read it back when it came out, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It also has gorgeous illustrations throughout the book. Keep in mind though, it's not an all-inclusive story. I believe it's a planned trilogy, with book two (Behemoth) coming out this fall.

As for me, I'm reading the Percy Jackson books. Currently on Book 4: Battle of the Labyrinth. I like the series almost as much as the Harry Potter books.

I've only ever read the first three novels. I'm sure I'll read the other trilogies/books in the same 'verse eventually, but I haven't had the urge to yet. The original trilogy ends the series nicely enough.

Black Company. Sounds like it's as bad as my best friend says. I avoided that series based strictly on her criticism of it.

It could be good as far as plot is concerned. The criticism I heard had more to do with how a few women in the story are portrayed, and the over-the-top powers of certain characters. One female antagonist in particular drew a lot of ire from her. From everything I was told, it didn't sound like I'd enjoy it any more than she did.

I don't recall her describing it as propaganda. Just distasteful and occasionally offensive. My impression from her description was the bad outweighed the good. I have a higher threshold of tolerance than she does, but was still left with a distinct feeling of being better off devoting my time elsewhere. On that note, the only reason she picked it up in the first place was because several people told her good things about it. I expect the majority opinion is that it's a good series. :P

Bernard Cornwall's take on the Arthurian legends, the Warlord Chronicles trilogy. Almost finished the first book, The Winter King, and am hoping to get the 2nd book tomorrow (Enemy of God).

I'm seeing some nice parallels with Dragon Age. Old Gods, religious struggles, bastard princes, morally ambiguous witches, invasions that threaten the land. I had to laugh when a character from France describes England as smelling of wet dog !

What were the criticisms? I'd be interested to hear them.

I'd honestly have to ask her again. It was years ago so the exact details are fuzzy. I remember a few references to rape she didn't care for, and the callousness and sadism of a female sorceress being way over-the-top when other, not as wicked women were portrayed as victims. There were more specific things than that, but we had the conversation so long ago it's a blur.
