So suddenly after I had patched the game (so far the biggest mistake of my gaming life) among all the other issues popping up I today discovered that I suddenly have stopped gaining approval w/ Varric when doing his Red Lyrium questline, which sort of halters my progression with him, what can I do about it?

Are you sure you aren't maxed out with him? Once your approval is at its maximum, you'll no longer get approval with him.
