XP system rewards and encourages leeching in Public games

I'm seeing more low level characters dropping in on half finished perilous runs for the massive XP bomb.  They stick around until the rewards screen then just hunt for another match in progress.

It's not always possible to kick these people immediately, maybe you're busy fighting or maybe you don't know enough people in the Pug to get organized about voting.  It bothers me that with the gold and XP sharing system that these people can actually level up faster than I can, no matter how quickly I can clear levels.

There are a lot of good reasons to share XP and gold in this way but it is far too easy to abuse.  Shouldn't the XP reward and gold distribution reward players proportionate to their individual effort in some way?

...you get significantly more exp from attacking things than you do from leeching.

Have you ever actually played multiplayer?

Yeah, actually I have!

Goodness me, so you are saying that I've misunderstood the XP and loot sharing rules, can you link to good explanation of how you see it working?  Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that everyone gets the sum total of the party XP and the sum total of all the gold collected.  It is not divided into shares, everyone gets ALL of it.

So, the level 1 guy who joins 1 second before the demon commander dies gets the same XP for the run as the Arcane Warrior wielding the flaming staff of justice, with a machete on the end.

When you attack something or do things like cast barrier on the person who is killing something you'll see a pop-up when the mob dies that says "+XX Experience (Damage)" or "+XX Experience (Support)"

If you're sitting in back doing nothing, you won't get those pop-ups.

At the end of the match the person who did the most damage and/or support will also be the person ranked first, with the most experience gained.

As a dps AND support keeper, I'm almost invariably #1 at the end of every match, because I get such huge bonus experience.
shame I'm lvl 20 so it doesn't really matter.

Watch my video in the "Keeper nightmare combo" thread on the front page if this forum, or just play a match and you'll see this.

Also, getting killstreaks and performing class combos will get you bonus Experience as well.

Do you not see your XP ticker going up while it is counting your teammate's contributions?  It's right there in your vid at like 19 min.

Anyways, thanks for derailing my thread with your erroneous info you jack ass.

But seriously though: I did actually learn something from your post.  That shocked + weakened = sleep?   If that is true that explains a lot, I have been wondering where my random sleep effects are coming from for a long time, so thanks for that.

Oh that's right, because at the end of the round when it shows how much exp everyone got, all 3 teammates got the same amount as me.

Wait a second..

Yeah and it's really easy to abuse.  In fact you're better off trying to abuse it by joining matches in progress than playing normally.  You can level and gain promotions much faster than even those people who have organised / regular perilous teams to grind with.  Because of this I would say that the game mechanics are actually encouraging you to leech in public games.

Oh wait, that was sarcasm above?  Okay dude, for the last time, yeah each player has different XP contributions which are then added up and you get the total amount.  Not your individual amount, watch your XP ticker in your video.  It ticks up when your teammates get their XP.  In a similar manner, they got ALL of your XP too.  FFS!!  Don't make me have to upload a video tutorial with your own video!

Read this thread, especially my long "cleric" response then read Amelia's response. You'll get a better understanding.

When you're done with that, then read this bug:

http://forum.bioware...ect-kill-types/

Then once you've processed it all in... take a deep sigh.

ah jeez... so they're happy with it like this?  Seems damaging to their MP community imo, but hey, that's just my opinion as a layman.

No matter which approach you go, there're going to be downsides.  I think having an in-game kick and just manually dealing with AFKs every now and then is probably what we'll have to settle for given the alternatives are often worse.

What you're saying does sound kind of like a truism but I actually disagree with that.  Even if there is no "perfect" way to allocate rewards there should at least be a much more fair one.  One that doesn't counter intuitively reward cheesing.  In fact, this particular aspect of it seems, well... stupid.  But who cares, eh?

I'm guessing they spent way too long discussing the pros and cons of various methods and probably settled on this one because it would offend the least number of casual gamers.  They're probs right.

I take it you don't use the kick function when you have an afk?  Because if you do so, they're pretty thoroughly removed from the equation and only waste their own time.  If it's assumed that most groups will kick an afk, then the system no longer "counter-intuitively rewards cheesing".

It's the team's decision to vote on an in-game kick.

And I have far more teams that agree to kick a blatant AFK than don't.  Are your experiences so very different?

More often than not, I'm soloing and I don't even have the option to boot them.  Even if I quit my own game in disgust they will receive Xp and a reward while I will not.  And, as I said in my first post it's not always possible to kick these people immediately, maybe you're busy fighting or maybe you don't know enough people in the Pug to get organized about voting.

When I have a game going with people just from my friends list and we can stop to organize ourselves to remove them, it's fine.  But it's a system that encourages these dudes to just keep doing it.  Booting them once only removes them from that particular game session and they'll be able to come back for a free ride next time you're playing in a public game.

If you were solo, grab a large group of enemies and let yourself and them die, just out of principle.

How long did it take for ME3MP to gain an AFK check kick? 1 year? It was also tied to firing your weapon and unfortunately lead to a few kicks in error on power users.

If you're just soloing more often than not, common sense begs the question of why you didn't set the room to 'Private'?

I can't speak for PC players, but organizing a vote-kick on the PS4 is a really easy 3 step system:

1. Tell the rest of the team, "Hey, xxx is AFK, we should probably kick him."

2. Rest of team votes to kick the leech.

3. Profit.

I mean, I can only assume PC has similar functions in this regard? While there are a lot of things that I feel could use improvement in DAMP, the ease-of-use of the Kick system is not one of them. ...unless they added a HUD icon over the players name that showed any kick vote skulls, maybe? To show the rest of the team that someone had voted to kick that person? ...nah, it's fine as is.

No matter how much we think about it, we still can't figure out what goes on in the mind of someone lacking in common sense

This matches the overwhelming majority of my experiences with AFKers on PC.  There've been a few painful exceptions where teammates don't have their mics on or pay no attention or don't care about the afk--either way they didn't vote. But those're the exceptions.

Yeah, thinking isn't really your strong suit, vividos, I can tell.

If I just leave the game on Private forever I'm not really playing "multiplayer" anymore except for when I go and book time with a buddy.  Not an ideal multiplayer experience.  Anyway, it's obvious that this is not an issue in Private games, only Public games as per the thread heading.

i dont mind leachers as long as they are not named Leroy or go afk

Im usually that guy that helps the low lvl players get better in games and i actually have a few regular players who were lower lvl but are now strong enough for threatening/perilous runs and its actually kinda fun protecting the noob so he doesnt enter the fade

If there is someone AFK, and the rest doesn't kick him/her, I wait at the next door (where he spawns) and shoot/stab/slash at the AFK guy. The other teammates get the idea then, almost always.
