You don't have the option to do a hard save after your fight with Saren and it only appears to work with the auto-save that occurs after the Saren fight. Many people started another game using their same Shepard losing their auto-save.
The absolutely criminal thing that Bioware has done with this disaster was to relentlessly hype the "continue your ME1 career" feature and then give absolutely no warning on how narrowly conditioned this primary functionality was going to be.
No one warned us, "Hey, if you start another run thru the campaign to level up Shepard, make sure you finish that 2nd pass AND don't lose the specific autosave because if you don't meet these criteria, you're going to be SOL as regards your 40 hours and Level 50 character

kthxbai!" What pristine lab environment did EA/Bioware QA this game? The reviews I've seen have all mentioned crashes, freezes, getting stuck in the world bugs; but no one has said they couldn't import their character. Funny how no one single review seems to have had a problem, isn't it? I guess they all have magic Xbox 360s that never RRoDed, never got upgraded, never had old saves cleared off the tiny 13GB hard drives. Nope, they all just....worked.
I pre-ordered the game and cleared my schedule to have a nice long evening free to dive in and all I've done for the last THREE HOURS is run for forum to fourm to be told that I'm pretty much boned unless I am able to find a pre-Saren fight save on my old Xbox and then finish it and save it and bring it home and perhaps import it. Since I'm not going to be over to the g/f's and back before NEXT Tuesday, I've got a worthless coaster that cost me $56 sitting here. All because Bioware was too busy drinking EA's Kool-Aid and bending the quality to EA's standards.
The fact that Bioware is in hiding from these forums and not offering explanations for their inexcusable failure to make the #1 selling point actually functional for all their PAYING CUSTOMERS speaks volumes as to where their priorities lie. (Hint: Delivering a working product is secondary to making sure those spiffy ads run during the playoffs.)
