Ok, so, I beat Mass Effect 1. I took my time and did everything, got past level 50 after about 40+ hours. However, when I go to import my character it tells me there are none available. I think "How can this be? Did I delete it for some stupid reason?" so I checked my memory. It's there.

So why isn't Mass Effect 2 finding it? Then I realized I was playing ME1 back before I changed my gamertag. About 6 months ago I paid to have myself renamed on XBL. Is this what could be affecting my import? If so, what do I do? If not, what is going on?

PLEASE HELP, I'll feel very very cheated if I can't get my ME1 character imported.

Also, since I beat ME1 originally I have had to get my xbox replaced due to red ring of death. Could this be affecting my saves?

A quick way to check to see if your saves can be imported into ME2 is if you can start a new game with them in ME1. If you can't, then you have to beat the game with them again. Luckily, it autosaves right before you fight Robo Saren

I had a similar problem because I had to change hard drives.

I'm in the same boat as you, I beat Mass Effect with 3 characters - one being a level 60.

I've had several 360's; due to red rings, drive failures, etc...i've transfered via transfer cable from a 20gb to a 120gb hd and then manually transfered save file via memory card to the 250gb hd.

I searched google for a solution to my problem and came across this post which hopefully outlines the solution...will let you know if it works for me.

That's Fine and Dandy for those that still have ME, but many on these boards no longer have it. My friend has my copy. You don't have the option to do a hard save after your fight with Saren and it only appears to work with the auto-save that occurs after the Saren fight. Many people started another game using their same Shepard losing their auto-save. I lost mine after I loaded up an older save to play the "Bringing Down the Sky" and "Pinnacle Station" DLCs.

You lost your hidden save game, because you clean cache, in xbox 360 menu.Hidden save is always write to cache when you completed game.

It's been two years since ME1 came out, did they really expect me to hold onto it? Great. So it sounds like I'm boned. Just great! I'M REAL F***ING HAPPY! *$!$@#(!^&#%$!^&

Yeah i don't have Mass Effect anymore either so i had to d/l it from xbl marketplace. The only reason i'm wasting the 20 bucks is b/c there's no way i'm playing to level 60 again at this juncture on ME1.

There's a lot to say about this whole subject none of it good - so i will just hit the "submit" button instead...

The replay option described by others in the forum just worked for me.

Specifically - load up the ME1 Saren fight and get the autosave just after...then the import option in ME2 finally showed valid save game files for the two different characters i just tried it on.

Hopefully a patch or something gets put in for those that don't have or don't wish to reacquire ME1 but if you can't wait, getting ME1 definetly works if you have a save near the end of ME1.

That being said i would have played the da*n game anyway even if i couldn't import...

...good luck to those that are stuck, hopefully a fix is otw asap.

Here's a slight twist on the problem at hand. I have two characters that I've beat the game with. BOTH of them showed up in "character import" section. However, one was green (valid end game data, and I could select it for import), and the other was red (still listed in valid end game data, but I can't select it for import).

I went back to Mass Effect and finished off Saren again to finish the game with the profile I couldn't select (actually, twice since I skipped past the credit and couldn't remember if watching them was necessary.) It still didn't work, and I can't import one of my two characters.

Just curious if anyone can shed some light on what's going on. I've got my old HDD around, and I'll try that too just to see what happens.

Would I need to clear the cache on the 360 and THEN defeat Saren the final time?

I'm just going to load the last save file before I beat the game, and re-beat the game. Its been 2 years since I played, and I can't even remember what happened. Where was the final fight and what was the final mission called?

The final fight with Saren takes place on the Citadel...just after the decision to save the council or not during that huge space battle with reaper - i didnt catch the actual name of the mission/quest. I keep a lot of saves so i knew i had a save close to the end of the game.

I didn't watch the credits on either re-playthru i accomplished btw. You get an autosave popup just after the actual fight with Saren - so maybe if you disabled autosave might be the reason it's red...or could be a corrupt file?

In case my earlier reply was missed it might be worth re-stating that the save games i re-played were not on my original hd/console - and were saves i had to transfer manually a long time ago due to previous 360 system failures.

Hope this answers some of those questions...

Not sure about clearing the cache question - if you check out some other threads related to this subject some say clearing the cache is part of the problem sometimes...maybe clear your cache before you playthru the end to free up space.

Follow a few of the links in this thread to look at the related issues...

Good luck.

Should I open a save right before confronting Saren. I tried my save where I went straight to fighting Saren and it didn't work. I keep getting the "Sign in has changed" thingy and it prompts me to restart which just brings me in a loop unless I sign out. If I sign out though I can't save my game

You don't have the option to do a hard save after your fight with Saren and it only appears to work with the auto-save that occurs after the Saren fight. Many people started another game using their same Shepard losing their auto-save.

The absolutely criminal thing that Bioware has done with this disaster was to relentlessly hype the "continue your ME1 career" feature and then give absolutely no warning on how narrowly conditioned this primary functionality was going to be.

No one warned us, "Hey, if you start another run thru the campaign to level up Shepard, make sure you finish that 2nd pass AND don't lose the specific autosave because if you don't meet these criteria, you're going to be SOL as regards your 40 hours and Level 50 character. kthxbai!"

What pristine lab environment did EA/Bioware QA this game? The reviews I've seen have all mentioned crashes, freezes, getting stuck in the world bugs; but no one has said they couldn't import their character. Funny how no one single review seems to have had a problem, isn't it? I guess they all have magic Xbox 360s that never RRoDed, never got upgraded, never had old saves cleared off the tiny 13GB hard drives. Nope, they all just....worked.

I pre-ordered the game and cleared my schedule to have a nice long evening free to dive in and all I've done for the last THREE HOURS is run for forum to fourm to be told that I'm pretty much boned unless I am able to find a pre-Saren fight save on my old Xbox and then finish it and save it and bring it home and perhaps import it. Since I'm not going to be over to the g/f's and back before NEXT Tuesday, I've got a worthless coaster that cost me $56 sitting here. All because Bioware was too busy drinking EA's Kool-Aid and bending the quality to EA's standards.

The fact that Bioware is in hiding from these forums and not offering explanations for their inexcusable failure to make the #1 selling point actually functional for all their PAYING CUSTOMERS speaks volumes as to where their priorities lie. (Hint: Delivering a working product is secondary to making sure those spiffy ads run during the playoffs.)

just to let all you guys know, if you import your character, you a get extrta resources, etc...

it doesnt make you start out from that level.

Lets say you import a level 60 Vanguard with Crazy equips, youll start back at level 1 with all your equips gone

UPDATE:  I found a post here: www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php which explained that I should use the D-pad, not the left analog stick.  This particular problem is now solved; good luck with the other problems.  And try the moon dance...it seems to have worked ;) -zoomcat

As I'm having a similar problem (and didn't see that anyone had addressed it) I wanted to ask again.  My apologies if I've missed the answer somewhere - a point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

I was able to import one ME1 character (which I played through to the end of ME2).  However, I wanted to make some different choices in ME2, so I spent the last month playing through ME1 again so I would have a new character to import, and.......nope.  Can't do it.  I can see her name in the ME2 import tool, however it's in yellow (not red), and is un-selectable.  The one I've already played is in green.
  • I played on the same console the entire time.
  • I've never had the red ring (on this Box).
  • I let the credits play through until the end.
  • I'm hesitant to clear a cache for fear of deleting something necessary for the ME2 import, at least until someone says "Yes, this is your solution."
  • I did a joyous full moon dance while praying to the Xbox gods and humming the tune from "A Bridge Too Far"
Okay, so that last bit is an exaggeration.  But if it would help, I'd be happy to give it a try.

Can anyone provide guidance?  Thank you in advance for your attention.
