Films based on video games (and games based on films for that matter) have a long history of being horrendously and comically terrible. With the way technology is today, computer games are actually a superior story telling medium to movies in my opinion. The only way what the op is suggesting might work is if it was a prequel of some kind. A film set in the Dragon Age universe but unrelated to the games.

that didn't stop Game of Thrones from been the most watched show since the sopranos, did it? You see, adapting a book to TV series i much like adapting dragon age... both DAO and the got books (or any books of similar depth and complexity) leave a huge amount of detail up to each individual readers world view and imagination.

....Wait.... what didn't stop GoT from being the most watched show since the sopranos? After reading and re-reading my post and this reply, I get more and more confused.

My point was that GoT, being written by one guy, with a set story/characters that don't drastically change with each reader/viewer, is wildly successful.

DAO, being written by every single player ever, with a story that is personalized to your liking with every choice you make, and a Protagonist that is almost literally different every time, and completely player-written, would likely be unsuccessful. It's the same reason BioWare can't really have your Warden show up physically in future games, which I won't dive into here.

I don't even know why GoT was brought into this discussion - the only similarities between the two are some plot elements. GoT is/was a very awesome book, and unless I've been living under a rock, books don't magically change based on what you think should happen at certain points in the story (aka choices). DAO is a game, and more importantly, a choice based RPG game. Player Agency is a huuuuuge part of what makes the game so amazingly fun for me. Without it, it just isn't Dragon Age anymore. My attachment to the franchise is largely due to my part in crafting my world state through all three games. Take that away and it would be a very mildly interesting cross between LOTR and GoT with a few extra bits.

Um, no.

Remember Dawn of the Seeker? I might like to see something like that again, a side story, except with less absurd fight choreography and more attention to lore.

You are wrong. I don't think you understand how limited words are and how much writing leaves to the imagination. The social cues and the feelings the actors convey in the show are going to be unlike what many readers imagined. I know this from talking to fans of the series. Also, the show budget can't actually cover every event and character. This changes context too.

I wouldn't mind short little movies, animated or not, for side stories or more background peices. But a full length feature film, no thank you

Blatantly stating "You are wrong" shows arrogance, something I can't be bothered to go up against. I've already given all my opinions on the subject, no use in repeating them.

Have fun discussing your imaginary DA adaptation, it ain't happening any time soon.

Peace.

I'd respect you more if you could stay on the topic of movie adaptions instead of "books never changing according to the readers".

Until then we have the live action short. Or Dawn of the seeker.

Heh I wouldn't mind if Jamie Bamber played (an older) Alistair. I don't even need my Warden to be in there, just him. Every time I see the guy I think of what a great Alistair he would be, to the point of it distracting me while watching Law & Order: UK.

At any rate, I live-action DA would be doable, primarily because a good portion of the conflict in the various games has involved the humanoid races who are more or less "normal" looking, as opposed to the various races in the Warcraft universe (whose movie is in post atm). That said, I don't think the movie format is the best for DA.

I really feel that there is just too much information to make a two hour movie anything but a pale imitation of the Dragon Age franchise. Let's take two large conflicts: darkspawn and mage vs. chantry/templars. We had to play an entire 60 hour game to drive home the fact that Blights are really bad, and that, to some degree, the Warden line "whatever it takes" is understandable (this varies from player to player of course). As for mages, well we've seen how volatile the issue can get even on these forums, from players who have played the games numerous times and consumed the other ancillary materials. Do you really think that a movie can capture the nuances without it resorting to the same laughable extremes that we saw in DA2? I don't.

I wouldn't mind some sort of mini-series, or a fixed 10 episode run, or something like that. A movie? No.

In this kind of RPG, a movie in itself is a terrible idea. Movies, like books, require predefined protagonists and storylines. Given that my warden was a female, I'd hate to see a DA movie with a male Warden - not because he's male, but because he's not my warden. Then we have the varying origin stories. Finally, the choices that Warden makes have the potential to be vastly different from mine. Given that everyone's personal world state is different, I don't see many people getting behind a DA movie that isn't expanded universe type stuff. This is assuming that most people would want a movie that somewhat reflects their own playthroughs/Wardens.

P.S. Even if they were going to do a DA movie, it would likely use BioWare's personal canon - a female Dalish elf who performed the Ultimate Sacrifice. There goes your little fantasy :P.

It doesn't necessarily have to have any involvement with the worlds we created. There were two prequel novels that were entirely stand alone. The three successive novels (particularly Last Flight, which had nothing to do with any current content) were all extremely vague about various events since DAO. I see no reason why a similar type of story couldn't be done for a movie of some sort.

Hell, they could do a whole Andraste movie, which would probably be pretty awesome. Mages versus barbarians, a fiery execution, very strong human interest elements; it would be great. They could do the first Blight, or any of the major elf/human conflicts. There is a lot of interesting material in the DA lore, and very little of it has to do with our world state.

I wouldn't mind Dragon Age movies so long as the story has absolutely nothing to do with any of the games.

Maybe the events of the first blight. Founding the Grey wardens

I was thinking the fourth Blight, where Garahel perished to slay Andoral, but that would work too.

I think the Hero of Fereldan should be the Inquisitor as well.

The only way I'd be in favor of this is if it takes place in a different time period set long after the Dragon Age games (not really into prequels honestly), and makes passing reference to the games. Therefore, making the movies canon in the game universe.

If they made a Dragon Age film and it followed the story lines of the games, then nah. Please no.

I'd much rather see a WH40K: Inquisition movie.
