The Warden is the most badass character Bioware has made along with Shepard. I would love to play as The Warden again. I don't know about the Inquisitor yet because I am not even close to finishing the game yet.

What are the good parts? What are the bad parts?

I have my opinion on that, but one thing is for sure, in germany DA:O is the highest rated of all DA games, so there is something about it, that makes it better than its successors.

Part of this could be expectations(or various market reasons) at the time, which does not mean that all aspects of the game should be repeated.

Baldur's Gate 2 for instance, was an incredible game at this time. This does not mean that future games should strive to emulate it in all aspects (for instance, you can never initiate dialogue with any of your companions in BG2).

Origins was a GREAT game. DA2 was an OK to good game depending on who you ask.

Inquisition offers hours of replay value. Inquisition is a fantastic game.   Sorry your over blown sense of entitlement has blinded you.

Anyways I think I'm done with this place. DA:I is doing great both critically and among actual gamers but all the haters seem to infect this forum with their negativity. I don't understand people who put so much energy into something they hate.

Mostly because they do not play the game and need something to do while not playing the game ?

But from someone who loves DAO as one of the best RPGs ever, and who liked DA2 for what it is, and really likes DAI as well ...

There is quite a differences between outdated mechanics (like the dialogue initiation you mentionend or like non voiced protagonist (and bad graphics

or isometric view, no one would want isometric view these days)) and things that are timeless good, like the fact you had: real origins for certain class/race combos, more RPG freedom (attribute distrubtion, choices, extrem consequence, NPC could betray you) etc etc in DA:O

I hope you see the clear line between those things,

I have said this before, and I will say it again. If something isn't broke, then you don't fix it. Witcher never changed their gameplay up so much just to fit with a broader audience.

Now the argument goes, well it would be boring if it was the same game over and over again.

The best way I can counteract this argument is with an analogy.

One night you make spaghetti, DAO, and it taste all right. Some things you need to fix. Then some nights down the road, you want to try that recipe out again and make it better. Instead of following your recipe, you make ravioli, DA2. Well now all your house guest expecting spaghetti are disappointed because they got ravioli and not spaghetti. So you go back to the kitchen down the line, have another house party, you actually make spaghetti this time, DAI, but it taste nothing like the original spaghetti you made and your house guest are happy its spaghetti, its definitely better than ravioli, but it's not better than that one recipe they really liked.

That's definitely not true. The first game played as a static Simon Says set in a single city. The second like a twitch third-person action game in three big areas. The third keeps the twitch combat in an open world. The Witcher definitely changes things between games.

Wat. Of course they are chasing Skyrim's numbers. Do you really think it is just a coincidence that the game is largely influenced by Skyrim?

I don't think so. Skyrim sold A LOT, it's just unreal to believe DAI would sell anywhere close to that. If they were after those numbers it would mean DAI is a colossal, studio breaking failure. I don't think that's the case.

Akalabeth? Wow. Looks like you've got me beat. I started with Starflight, or Wizardry if we're talking fantasy.

I get the impression that the really long-time CRPG players here haven't had a problem with DAI.

I've had more than a few, personally. Not quite that old, but..yeah.

Mainly because Bioware abandoned any pretense at making sense with DAI. I like it, but there's just so many things that are just flat out absurd in terms of game design and worldbuilding that it just makes me want to slam my head on my desk repeatedly. It's like nobody sat down and seriously gave some things more than ten seconds of thought.

I don't understand why this is so hard to grasp.

Just make a PC game for a change. Quit catering to consoles.  They are ruining the RPG genre with these phony, cheeseball RPG's.

It's not like they will lose money making a PC game. Everyone is so greedy for piece of this mysterious, hidden console jackpot.

Divinity asked for $400,000, over $900,000 was raised.

So they made the game. It sold well. And made Larian Studios millions of dollars.

More importantly, it boosted their reputation.

JUST MAKE A FRICKIN' PC GAME.

I enjoyed playing Divinity much better than this. So did thousands of others, apparently. Unexpected gem of the year.

First, DA:I is a PC game. I play it on PC with a keyboard and mouse and have no issues. Get over it.

Second, I bought into the hype and bought Divinity. I made it about fifteen minutes and was bored to tears. Never again.

If "Making a frickin' PC game" means making games like Divinity, I'll switch to consoles right now.

I remember back in the days of DA2 when the "BioDrones" were largely constructive posters trying to understand why people hated the game so much and make their cases as to why it wasn't that bad, and "haters" were entirely mean-spirited trolls posting insults and vulgarities, not even listening to what the other side had to say.

When did things flip around like this?

Wait, so if i like DA:I, then i should stop playing it and buy a different game? Even though the one I'm already playing is (by your definition) the exact same thing and to top that off  I'm already enjoying myself playing it?

Yeah pretty much, just play WoW instead its gonna give you more bang for the buck, on the plus side it free for the 20 first levels. Fetch quests included.

Fanbases usually operate on a "circle the wagons" mentality.

Well, as you can see from my sig, I've kind of worked through that issue for my own part.

I'm with you there, if you skip the fact that they were blatantly dishonest they way they showcased the tactical camera, in the desert no less, not bumping into any walls. Then they do the absolute bizarre gutting of the tactics menu. If anything, not story related, that stood head and shoulders above anything else they did,in terms of mechanics, was the tactics menu. It was sheer brilliance on their part to come up with a thought provoking and complex way to control companions. I read one guy on the DA2 forum that said he was getting so good at tactics that he could let the game almost play itself. I certainly don't want another DAO but i did want the tac cam from that game. I just needed a piece from that game that was it and I needed good mouse and keyboard controls. Even in DA2 i could switch from inventory to the character screen with one button press, now I have to back right out of inventory then go into the character screen. It's inefficient and lacks polish and that's just one example of how poorly kb/ mouse was implemented. They're the ones who made the bold statements about pc games for pc gamers, so make good on the promise.

Huh tactics weren't thought provoking it was just a couple scripts and made the game a complete face roll.

In dai I actually worry about positioning and such

What are you talking about? There was a whole range of options for tactics in the first two games. It just didn't boil down to a couple of scripts as you say. Ya I worry about positioning as well since my archer and mage still want to run headlong into combat instead of staying on the peripheral.

Yes it did.....

Healing, tank, cc.

It wasnt complicated sorry mate.

Edit.

Trying not to sound condescending but there's nothing complicated or interesting about the tactics menu in da. Made the game way to easy.

DA:O sold 3.2 million full priced copies in 3 months (!) and probably sold another 1 to 3 million copies since then. Those are damn good numbers, not to mention that DA:O was highly praised by critics and gamers alike, so from a financial aspect it was really foolish to completely change the franchise. If EA was smart then they would have made a DA:O 2 and DA:O 3, which could have easily sold 5+ million copies each, in order to milk their fan base by letting us bask in RPG goodness.

Full price? In its first month in the US, DA:O did 362,000 on the 360. Not exactly earth shattering numbers, it's kind of hard to believe that there weren't any price cuts between then and February 2010.

Also that link is EA saying they had shipped-in to retailers 3.2 million copies.
