Installed and started game tonight (finally!! :D).  As always with all Bioware games, I'm starting my first run-through as a Human, Male, Knight(/Paladin/Fighter/etc.).  I was surpised that they brought back the ability to customize the PC's voice, but now I have a concern.

Back in the NWN days (and earlier), voice didn't matter too terribly much because it was only used for one-line utterances to match the actions and not actually used for the dialog.  For DA:I, of course, that's not true.

Long story short, of the two voice options, I picked choice (2), the deeper, American-sounding voice, as it seemed to fit better with the character I created.  Playing, just now, through the first scene, though, the voice acting, though not terrible, was not all that great.  Choice (1) was a nasally sounding UK English fellow.  Is he a different actor, and more importantly, is his voice acting better?

Haven't played with the American male voice yet, but I have with his English counterpart and I must say that Harry Hadden-Paton does a mostly fantastic job. Calm and gentle most of the time, but quite capable of a satisfying snarl when the tension ratchets up. I was put off by Jon Curry from the moment of character creation because the voice sounded like one of those dreadful "duh!" American types (ditto with the female American voice), and there's also that he voiced Zevran from Origins and I just can't get over that.

ETA: Oh, and while we're on the subject of voice acting, I must give a shout out to Claudia Black who was absolutely sublime as Morrigan. That same rich chocolately quality and clarity from the first game, but with a great deal more of mellowness and resignation now in suiting Morrigan's present circumstances...just wow. I'm still kind of iffy on Morrigan from the first game because she 'force cheated' with my Alistair, but I totally loved her in DAI and wished there was even more of her. Morrigan also had the only truly satisfying character arc in DAI for me. Claudia Black was one of the few voice actors who did an excellent job all the way through, in addition to some others like Gareth David-Lloyd, Kate Mulgrew, Indira Varma and Ramon Tikaram.

He voiced Zevran?  Ha!  No wonder he sounded slightly familiar.  Time to start a new character! ;)

But, yeah, it's the "calm and gentle" nature of the English guy that I felt didn't suit my character.  I want him to have a little more grit and sound a little more battle seasoned.  But, oh well, if the voice acting is good, hopefully, I'll get used to it.

Thanks!

I started with the femquisitor using the British accent. Later I switched to the American voice, and found I like this one better. I think for me, the British voice just sounds too much like Hawke.

Have we actually ran out of things to complain about? The voice acting in this game is fantastic. There's nothing else to talk to about. We have the luxury of four voices to choose from. FOUR!!! Also all companions and NPCs are excellent.

How do you figure four? Male and female to me is separate. So technically for each gender two. And that isn't enough for me.

Dragon's Dogma had you choose between 12 or so voice overs. And you had a CC that allowed you to customize not only the face, but the body build as well. How short your limbs are, etc. You could even make a child for goodness sake and it was pretty hilarious.

Even Saints Row 4 with the choice of three voice overs allowed you to change the pitch and tone of your character.

All my males sound the same because the American voice is to deep for my liking and it only fits dwarfs.

All my females sound the same.

Nobody is complaining about the voice acting lol. We're just sharing thoughts on our favorite voice actors.

English guy voices the angry lines very well. Honestly, if you want to see the BSN devolve into a civil war, ask which VA is best, or mention the Witcher being better than DA.

Dragons Dogma, I played it a while ago, but I don't think he spoke much, which is why they can get away with 12 options. DD had a good character creator, however, bioware already stated that they really wanted to focus on the face (which they did a great job at) because that's what we'll be seeing the most. Body size and shape were of less interest. Instead they put different sizes for the races.

I used the "American" voice for my Qunari Male, it fitted very well. Sort of reminded me of DS9 Worf, which was great.
My current play through of Qunari Female has the "English" voice, simply because damn I like that voice.

Didn't play Dragon Dogma, but Saints Row doesn't have nearly as much dialog as Dragon Age, it's ridiculous to compare the voice options between those 2 games.

Well, dialogue does cost money. If you do a game with multiple voices and lots of dialogue, I can imagine it taking a nice chunk out of the budget. Voice pitch adjustment would be nice option to have of course.

Ok, I am going to be downright silly now. How funny would that be to adjust the pitch so my inquisitor sounded like a chipmunk? Ok, done being silly :D :D

I can't speak for the male voice actors, but having played through with female English and about halfway through with female American, I'd say they both do a pretty good job for their default races. Sumalee Monanto sounds like a gruff and disaffected mercenary or smuggler who can still pull out the snark-fu when she needs it, and Alix Regan does a good job portraying the emotions I would expect an elf separated from her clan or a noble just trying to keep up when the world makes no sense.

Who's complaining?  Jesus Chirst.  I was just asking which one was better?  Go suck a lemon and stir up trouble elsewhere.  Thanks.

Apparently.  Live and learn. :)  I've purposely stayed away from the forums until now since I haven't had time to start the game, and intentional or not, people are generally thoughtless and post spoilers, even in the thread title which can't be missed:  "OMG!  HOW DO I KEEP GWEN FROM DYING AT THE END?!?!?!!! (*spoilers*)"

It grows on you. The English one I mean. At least it grew on me. But I often could help picturing Cary Elwes at times.

Deep American Man was acceptable, but not spectacular. As with all the voices, there are moments of "whose line is it?" But there wasn't a counteracting memorable moment of amazing acting nuance for Deep American Man, sadly. I think he makes up for it with just his timbre and the inherent gravity of deep voices, though. Honestly, 90% (completely made up statistics) of the lines don't require any emoting.

I am totally in love with the British female voice, just like I fell like a brick for Traynor in ME3.

I find it's less about American vs. British, than that both the American actors have MUCH deeper voices.  So I use the brit for my human and elven characters, and the American for my dwarves and Qunari.

Personally I thought both Hawke VAs were brilliant, and better than any of the 4 in DA:I, but that's not to say any of them are bad.

Using American Male for my Qunari. I'd say inoffensive enough but not spectacular. I think most of the companions are noticeably better, but maybe that's down to them having less "Could you please explain the world to me as though I'm 5 years old?" lines. It must be hard to voice so much of that and not have it sound bland.

I can't even tell who's voice I'm using. I picked the first one for female and I think that's American accent voice but I'm not sure. xd  Can someone confirm?

So far I like the voice acting for the player characters, except for one detail.

It's really disconcerting and jarring to hear my elves speak with a "Ferelden" or "Orzammar" accent.

I can understand why the proper Dalish accent wasn't recorded; time, budget etc. Still feels really off.
