I'm not sure if there are much to discuss about the native race of Par Vollen we hardly knew about. It's a shame we can't ask Iron Bull about the Fex though.

Oh. Well then, The next DA has been talked about as being located up there in that region.

Fex as playable race in DA5*!
*can't be DA4 since there would need to be a game that introduces them first.

Why would they need to be introduced in another game first? Surely any confusion about Fex lore can be cleared by the Fex player character not knowing much the world s/he inhabits and asking other characters about them.

I suppose if they are a playable race in Tevinter and their origin is being a slave since childhood or something then that could work.
I just expect a Fex NPC or maybe a follower first.

Honestly I don't think anyone has really put much thought into what Fex are going to be, a writer is probably going to wait until they get a good idea of what Fex should look like to be popular before pulling the trigger. If I had to guess they'll be less... human that the rest of the species shown so far.

Back in DA:O time, fur rinsed seemed to be a popular characteristic for them. I can't remember why, I guess the name sounded furry to some people.

We can only hope that World of Thedas V.2 will shed some light on the Fex.

I think the idea of them being something like feline in appearance comes from the fact Par Vollen is a tropical rainforest environment, and felines are creatures that do very well in those environments. Then just apply the whole "Take an animal and make it humanoid" approach scifi and fantasy commonly does and voila, a Fex concept.

The fex could easily be whatever the qunari were before they became qunari. But I do admit I've been curious about them since I heard of them. Still... I'm not sure if they are even still a canon race. They haven't even appeared in a codex entry since, what... DAO?

Well, fennecs are everywhere in DAI, even if they are only native to a desert in the real world. Maybe the Fex are fennec-people.
A race of animal-people is about all Dragon Age is missing, unless you count the qunari. Still, I don't entirely like the idea of cat/fox/lizard-people, for Dragon Age. It works for some settings, but I am just not seeing it for DA. I'm sure that BioWare could be more creative, especially given the framework of "human, but different." Which is basically what every other race is--even the qunari, who differ mostly in size, bulk, and having horns.

I am reliably informed that they still exist in the setting. (Source: I asked David Gaider and he told me.) Apparently the question of whether or not they'll ever appear in a game or other material is still open, though.
I would love it if the second volume of The World of Thedas at least told us what the heck they are.

It's sad that this hasn't generated more outrage on the BSN. they totally dropped them ball in DA:2 and Inq in ignoring the huge interest that DA:O players had for the Fex.

Yeah, Bioware has proven themselves as clever for the "Take an animal and make it humanoid" concept. We only have to look at Mass Effect for that.

Yeah, Bioware has proven themselves as clever for the "Take an animal and make it humanoid" concept. We only have to look at Mass Effect for that.
It worked for Mass Effect, though, because they were going for a sort of old-school-made-new feel, where aliens are basically like people with masks--with a couple exceptions that you'd never see aboard your ship (hanar, elcor), and the bulky krogans.
And, I think the aliens looked sufficiently different from any real-world counterpart that you couldn't just point and say, "Hey, that's a <insert creature here>!" Similar, but not the same. I would also argue that if aliens exist and some are bipedal, some of them probably basically would resemble two-legged animals of some sort. Others we might not even immediately be able to recognize as being alive.
That said... cat people, fox people, and lizard people have been done to death. I'm not immediately sure what you could do to make a brand new unique humanoid race, but I'm sure the art designers at BioWare could come up with something interesting.
But that is assuming that they'll even try, because the fex seem to have basically been scrapped.

I mean they're probably a furry race I mean as much as some people dislike them they are so ubiquitous in modern fantasy that it's odd that DA doesn't have one, and Fex does sound super anthropomorphic animal-y.

Compared to every other established race option, these "Fex" would have to explain a lot, and I mean A LOT, of the background, beliefs, history, culture, etc. Which would pull a lot of resources from writing the other stories. If the race were already established, even a glimpse of them, would be enough to build the foundations for a possible PC to come fill in the gaps.
