Why not Medieval 2 and Assassin's Creed 1 or 2?

Note: Assassin's Creed 1 Assassins are Shia! Now that makes things interesting.

Never bothered much with Medieval 2 and while I do like the rest of the AC games, I had the most fun with the third entry (mostly in concerns to gameplay). Also, didn't want to have all 4 games to dominate the list.

And yes, a heavily fictionalized version of them at least.

I don't really consider any game to be 10/10 (that'd imply perfection), even amongst my favourites, but...

Those are the ones I like the most, with expansions, DLC and fanmade patches where applicable, in no particular order:

Starcraft

TES: Morrowind

Neverwinter Nights

Neverwinter Nights 2

Rome: Total War

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Knights of the Old Republic II

Final Fantasy X

Starcraft: Brood War

Mass Effect 2

Final Fantasy VI

Medieval 2: Total War

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

Assassin's Creed II

Final Fantasy VIII

Age of Empires II

Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm

TES: Skyrim

I probably forgot a few.

Persona 4: Golden

Zelda: Ocarina of time

GTA: San Andreas

Persona 3

The Walking Dead Season 1

Rome: Total War

Starcraft: Brood War

They are the ones that I'd give the most accomplished score

It's hard to think of a game that's flawless.

The closest is probably Half Life 2.

This is a really hard thing to quantify.

What is a 10/10 game? Everyone should describe that before putting their answers. Because I doubt that a 10/10 game means a game with no flaws. So there needs to be description, parameters.

For me, I would saw a 10/10 game is a game that manages to engage me mentally, emotionally, and mechanically. It causes me to think, it causes me to feel, and it causes me to do (in other words, the mechanics or gameplay are/is enjoyable in and of itself).

...it's hard to say. Few games have really caused me to think. If it were just the last two Final Fantasy XIII would win hands-down. DA and ME have caused me to think, a little bit at least, and have pretty good gameplay, but they have no emotional impact (outside of ME3, which I consider to be a crowning achievement of Bioware storytelling...but the gameplay suffers for it).

Clearly opinion based thread. What in your opinion is the very definition of a 10/10 game.

VTMB(With patches)

A game that meets the following conditions is a 10/10 game.

Reasonable length, replay value, good mechanics, great gameplay, amazing sound, artful graphics (whether 2D or 3D), interesting lore/story (depending on the genre, no one plays Quake, to name an example, for the story.

10/10 is just you know, wow, that game was a lot of fun. Hey, if someone was looking for a game to play, then play this one because I enjoyed it a lot more than a bunch of these other games.

Guild Wars 2

Last Of Us

Uncharted Series

Flawless Masterpiece.

But there is still this moronic rating tendency: would rate what they like 10/10 and what they dislike 0/10. Fortunately not in this thread.

For me, a 10/10 game is a game that makes me say "wow" the moment I start playing it - and continues to make me say "wow" after I finish it. A 10/10 game is a step above a merely excellent 9/10 game; a paragon of its genre, a triumphant moment in gaming that will either stand the test of time, or will be remembered fondly. In other words, a truly special game.

With that in mind, here's why I think these 5 games deserve 10/10.

Unreal Tournament 2004: endlessly fun, easy to learn yet well-balanced and difficult to master gameplay. Graphics that is at once technically impressive and aesthetically gorgeous, even to this day. The sheer volume of content sealed it. This game was built to stand the test of time, and it does.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles: 2D Sonic platforming game formula perfected, then combined with an staggering volume of content.

Portal and Portal 2: simply put, I've never had so much joy playing a video game as I did playing these two games.

System Shock 2: a case study in horror gaming that doesn't rely on annoying "can't see s***" lighting and tiresome jump scares, which people are still trying to imitate and failing miserably to this day. Atmospheric, immersive, terrifying, memorable.

Not cool. I'm out of likes for the 3rd time. Unreal Tournament 2004 is the best multiplayer ever and has awesome singleplayer.

However as games gain in complexity over the years, I now find Doom and it's ilk a bit too simplistic, because Ive become considioned into accepting narrative, or story-driven games as the norm. Games such as Mass Effec and Dragon Age are now kind of the standard for me, and anyting that doesn't immerse me in a similar way now feels stale. Admittedly thought Doom is still pretty fun for a quick stress-relieving blast.

Huh, the circles I've been in usually feel the opposite. The purist games of yesteryear often had significantly deeper gameplay and narratives of now usually just means "cinematic" and flourishy without necessarily having any real character or story depth either.

I guess what I would say there is an increasing desire to see motivations and interactions beyond "X is a mean ex ranger with a mean streak" as your entire story concept, but so far "story" has basically meant injecting Hollywood style plots and cinema which isn't the solution IMO, first because many Hollywood style plots, despite having extensive dialogue and scenes, I find very vapid and frankly the random programmer who was taping blurbs to the instruction manual is just as qualified to create stories as far as I'm concerned. Second, it's reduced the gameplay incentive. Doom was positively labyrinthine compared to what came after it.

I feel like there's also serious bloat in many sequels where it's like, oh we need to give them the Vacuum weapon or the water pistol because that was in the previous games... there's more 'stuff' but it's not always fun.. makes things feel sort of like a chore sometimes I guess.

Much of the "complexity" of modern games I just find irritating, to be honest I guess. I'm pretty much just running through setpieces a lot of the time pressing the punch/shoot button... However, it all depends and I've played some that were pretty fun.

Lufia II

Also can't believe I missed someone posting this one... sunk so many hours into that game once upon a time. So nice.. I don't know if I could give it a 10/10 but it's something.

Now go play Deadly Premonition
