Is it just me or do the Tranquil become more emotional as the games go on? I swear there's one tranquil in skyhold (might be the magical researcher) who talks like she has emotions. Even the Tranquil in Redcliffe's tavern came off as being somewhat emotional if I'm remembering him right.
The Tranquil seem rather....animated

That was sort of my reaction to them as well. Their words for the most part fit the tranquil outlook, but the delivery wasn't near emotionless enough for me. Then again I think Owain spoiled me against other tranquil.

Tranquil aren't robots. In Asunder one of them stated that even without emotions, they still had free will.

Why would lack of emotions equal lack of tone? I don't really subscribe to that notion. They could still emulate the speech patterns of people around them, even if they don't really feel emotions themselves.
I thought the Tranquil in this game were fine.

This is the reason why they made them into Ocularas.

I remember during my first playthrough, I was at Redcliffe's inn and started talking to this mage guy. I thought he was just a regular dude until he mentioned he was tranquil and I was taken aback. He sounded no different than anybody else in the game. I wonder why they decided to do that in this game. I liked that they sounded so different in the other games as it added to the overall alienness of the whole Tranquil deal. It made them stand out.

I would like to think it's a sign of the circle loosening their practices though I'm not entirely sure how that would work for Tranquil.

The researcher tranquil is rather sassy (I love her), but being completely cut off from emotions is such an alien verging on impossible concept IMO that I can't say her behavior is "out of character".

I had the same reaction. Was talking to this dude and all of the sudden I had the option to ask "So you're tranquil?" and it surprised me. He didn't sound tranquil at all.

My goodness, I bet some of the other voice actors weren’t really angry or sad when they read their lines… HOW DEEP DOES THIS GO?!

Could just be a VA problem. Sometimes voice actors never really nail the actual tone needed for a scene or dialogue. Like the female Inquisitor's VA (British one, can't remember her name) in the intro when she said "What's going on here?".
A woman was screaming for help. Calmly saying that line is kinda jarring. But the VA might not have known the context.
As for the Tranquil, I don't know that I noticed a difference, but Owain and Karl did set a precedent for Tranquil (as did random NPC tranquil) that they can't express emotions. They can't even fake emotions. So it's not like say... Saix from KHII and his anger (that he felt was just fake).

As someone who lives with Asperger Syndrome (not that I would say the two are the same), I agree with this. It's perfectly possible to feel no desire to do things like make eye contact or show emotion with your face and voice, but still force yourself to do it because you know it makes other people uncomfortable when you don't. If you prefer, maybe Owain was busy organizing the stockroom and was just to polite to tell you that he doesn't have time to deal with your petty stuff like demons and blood mages invading the tower.

They aren't wearing their mark, either, but I guess that's because the Chantry has all but dissolved.
Maybe it's just a VA problem. But I kinda like the idea they are slowly reverting back to normal. Maybe because of the breach, and no longer being under Chantry control. There's a lot of spirits coming through the rifts. Probably just a VA issue though.

The Tranquil I noticed had the mark. Helsima in Skyhold has it.

The brands vary from Circle to Circle. Gaider said that a while back. There's a thread with that in it floating around somewhere. Basically, you could have a place like the Ferelden Circle where they are more discrete about the brands, and a place like Kirkwall where they wanted to make a statement.

I do not like Inquisition's Tranquil; they are a passive threat against every mage in Southern Thedas.
They are creepy, strange, and a constant reminder of why I hate the Templars and why I hate the Chantry.
In other words, they are the Tranquil we needed in Origins or DA II; they evoke similar emotions echoed in their codex entry.
